Description

A nice edition with 10 original illustrations and the first edition cover. The Bridge of San Luis Rey is American author Thornton Wilder's second novel. It was first published in 1927 to worldwide acclaim. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, and was the best-selling work of fiction that year. It has also been made into several movies. It tells the story of several interrelated people who die in the collapse of an Inca rope bridge in Peru, and the events that lead up to their being on the bridge. A friar who witnesses the accident then goes about inquiring into the lives of the victims, seeking some sort of cosmic answer to the question of why each had to die. Read more

  • A difficult read
For me this was a difficult read. I didn't really see the purpose of going into the details of these 5 lives to have them die. Also, the language was too flowery for me. However, it won a Nobel Prize, so go figure!

  • It won the Pulitzer Prize.
It won the PP so who am I to critic this book. But here it goes. The writing style is definitely unique. In fact, I honestly couldn’t understand the meaning of about 50% of the sentences. It reminded me of a murder mystery that goes unsolved. For me, the ending was very unsatisfying. In other words, I was disappointed after reading it. I think it won the PP for its unique writing style rather than the content of the story. That’s my take. ... show more

  • Andes
Quick, short novella. About a bridge and a tragic event that occurred in the times of Spain’s colonization. One observer, Inquisition, tragedy and a damning book.

  • Bored me a little
Slightly hard to follow and the story did not engage me all that much. Some of the stories of where the deceased came from were good, but a few left me bored and ready to move on.

  • Very small font. Hard to read.
Very small font and you cannot increase, except to make the whole page larger, and then it doesn't fit on the page. Amazon should not sell this version. Not worth $1.99.

  • Can't read on kindle
