  • Amazing
I was hesitant at first because it was an Oprah Book Club book, and some of her books can be overrated. I read some of the other reviews and some people said it was just a book about "nothing". In a sense that's true, it simply follows the life story of a woman. But the life she endures is just heartbreaking. It represents millions of women who have experienced the same, and I was literally left physically ill after reading the climatic scene towards the end. It was like a car accident. I didn't want to read it but I couldn't stop. A think it's ridiculous that one reader critiqued that the main character doesn't change or grow. I would challenge her to try living this character's life and try and find the strength to overcome her situation. I loved this book and am buying because I want to reread it for the 4th time, and replace the one I lost. Just be prepared, this is not a happy and fluffy read and could be a huge trigger to anyone who has been involved in a similar situation. ... show more

What can I say about this book? At first, it seemed to be like a Seinfeld episode - just a book about nothing. But as I continued to read, it got very deep and strange. I was intrigued by the flow of “nothing”. Kind of like one of those days when I just don’t want to get out of bed and I’m happy about it. I got into Ruth’s mind. I saw the way she saw the world, how different from my own! This is not a book that everyone would like, but I did -very much. ... show more

  • Too Crazy
I’m afraid I didn’t like this book very well! There were no redeeming characters and the characters didn’t seem to grow or learn life’s lessons.

I am not going to post any spoilers! Just make sure you have a few days that you can do nothing but read! This book is so intense. Sadly, I can easily envision this exact situation in my small hometown. It's been a very long time since I have had a book that I was so engrossed in that for days, I did nothing but read. ... show more

  • A story about a dysfunctional family
Told from Ruth's point of view...a story about a child verbally abused by her mother. Yet she has a mountain of compassion. Unfortunately. Ruth is a product of her environment who grows up believing she has no options.

  • One of the best books I've ever read!
I love this book! I've passed it along to my family members & they loved it, too. So much, in fact, that it was never returned! I have ordered another so I can read it again. I've bought a copy for my Aunt's birthday & believe she will love it as well. Great characters-so realistic! Ruth is such an oddball but you can't help but love her & root for her. ... show more

  • Amazing
This book was the best thing I've read in years. It is funny and heartbreaking, tender and insightful. I am going to make a point to read it many more times.

  • Interesting story & Characters
What a strange story! Of course it was an Oprah book, being full of pathos. Well written and not superficial, derivative or shallow. Hard to like most of the characters; sad, broken, lost and some beyond repair. I do wonder how Ruth will turn out. Since it was an Oprah book I think we are supposed to believe that Ruth forges ahead and makes a decent life but she isn't really an admirable person. ... show more
