  • I give 5 stars because I dig this type of wit
Oh boy, strap in folks because the 1960's series "The Avengers" featuring John Steed and Catherine Gale, (Emma Peel in the later episodes) is one wild ride! It's like James Bond meets "I Love Lucy" - but with less martinis and more suspicious suicides. Our two heroes are the epitome of British cool, solving crime with a dry wit and nonchalant demeanor that would make even the most hardened criminal break out in a cold sweat. From spy games to treasonous plots, these two agents take it all in stride, never breaking a sweat, always with a clever comeback ready. The show is a nostalgic throwback to a time when secret agents were suave, villains were campy, and the world was a simpler place. It's like a comforting bowl of mashed potatoes for the soul. If you're looking for a laugh and a walk down memory lane, "The Avengers" is the show for you. Just don't expect any explosive action scenes or heart-pumping thrills. It's all about the witty banter, the quirky gadgets, and the impeccable style of John and Catherine, (and Emma). So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as these two agents nonchalantly save the world one mystery at a time. ... show more

  • Silly As Late Sixties Batman, As Colorful, But Oh So Stylish!
When I was a kid I actually thought the stories were fine. As an adult they're plain silly, and not always in that cool "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" way (i.e. sometimes lame writing). But, hey, they're just the vehicle for something wholly better. That's the mod UK of the sixties, in particular Emma Pee,l as portrayed by Diana Rigg. She's got amazing presence and beauty for the screen which has never been eclipsed in the half-century since this show was filmed. She out-fashions Twiggy with more curves of attractive femininity with the possibility of turning into a one-woman wrecking crew a'la Uma Thurman of Kill Bill fame. Patrick McGee asSteed is a cool gent himself, definitely a dedicated follower of fashion in the words of Ray Davies. Starting in season five the color and clarity of the program is over the top good, and more so considering the age being over a half-century. I loved it as a kid for different reasons (it often was a bit scary and mysterious to my immature self), now I just see it as a great time capsule of a very memorable time with one very beautiful travel guide. ... show more

  • Mrs. Peel, we’re needed.
One of my favorite shows from the 60s. I upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray. Definitely see a difference on the early BW eps. Crisper, better contrast. The color ones are on order. I have an Oppo machine that I added an all region circuit board. I have no problems with Region 2 playback in the USA.

  • Perfect Blu-ray Transfer of The Avengers (but you need a region free blu-ray player)
This item is my very first UK import Region Blu-ray disc (this will not play on Blu-ray players sold in the US; you definitely need a region free Blu-ray player). This is an excellent Blu-ray transfer, crisp and sharp picture with crystal clarity. Whatever source they used for this Blu-ray transfer must have been in excellent condition, most likely original film elements. There is no sign of blemishes anywhere on the film. My warm thanks and congratulations to the people who were involved in the making of this product. I already owned the US-Released The Avengers The Emma Peel Collection 2-DVD set. The first DVD in that set is Series 4 - this item is the Blu-ray version of that set. The upgrade from the DVD format is tremendous. Plus, you get the subtitles which was missing from the DVD format. The audio format is the same, just 2.0 channel audio, so there is no upgrade with respect to the audio aspect. There seems to be tons of extras and bonus features which are also great upgrade from the DVD version, which I believe doesn't have any bonus features. I am still enjoying the episodes so I haven't got around exploring the bonus features yet. If you love The Avengers and if you have a region free Blu-ray player, you are going to enjoy this immensely. I didn't have a lot of opportunities to watch The Avengers when I was growing up but I am glad I discovered it later. I have huge liking for 60s TV shows, especially the ones with British flair. ... show more

  • Really boring
When I watched these films on TV in the 60's I was small and was easily entertained. Well now at nearly 70, I'm not impressed. I did like Emma Peel but she's alway wrapped up in black. The storyline really leaves so much out. They insinuate the the Soviets are the enemies but don't actually talk about it. ... show more

  • Needs to release original episodes in color not B&W
I’m pretty sure the VHS version I owned back in the day was color for the 1965 season. I could be wrong but all of these episodes are in Black and White, when my set only had a very few in B&W. I wish that they would release in their color formats! It totally lacks dimension. Otherwise it’s the Avengers I grew up watching as a young child with my mother. The color though is a big deal. ... show more

  • Blast from the past with Diana Rigg
I grew up watching the Avengers and Diana Rigg was my first TV love, so once I bumped into these I had to rewatch them. The plots and dialog were a bit cornier than I remember, but it was a different day, and it was a lot of fun to take a look back at the show after all these years.
