  • Worked good for two days.
Color: 2-Bay, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM
It was a pain in the a@@ to set up. It would not initialize drives, there were two images or icons on the setup page that were just placeholders, I clicked one by accident, and the drives initialized. I had the unit on my desk for a couple of days, and when I was sure it was working I went to move it next to my router. Kiss of Death plugged into my router and outlet. It then proceeded to ask me for the admin password I never was asked to set, the IP address was also changed and wanted that password to confirm the change. I spent 1.5 hrs with tech support doing the same stuff over and over again. He said he would consult an engineer and email me back. I figured I had a defective unit and requested a replacement from Amazon. Removed my drives and dropped off at Whole Foods, had my replacement by 6 pm that same day. That is what I love about Amazon, thanks, Stevy. The replacement went smoother just popped the drives back in the new NAS and was Basically up and running once the software located the NAS on the network. I will re-review it once it's been running awhile as it seems to have a few quwirks I have not figured out yet. ... show more

  • Unstable and Unreliable
Color: 2-Bay, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM
I'll preface this review with praise of the TerraMaster Tech Support team, their support is great. They are second to none. I have had this product for only 10 months. I installed two new WD 2.5 GB drives and set them up as a RAID. During a recent (08/12/23) power outage my TerraMaster NAS gave up the ghost. Although I could see the IP address of the NAS on my system, I could not log into it. I noticed that the NAS was acting as a new unit and that any further action would result in the loss of all my data. I contacted TerraMaster Tech Support and they remotely logged in and discovered that my volume on the NAS was corrupted. The first thought was that this was on a RAID 1 system so I should have redundancy. However, the OS that controls the NAS corrupted both RAID 1 drives destroyed the user list so my data was not accessible. Compare this to my old NAS which has been working fine for 12 years with the same HDDs. In closing, the OS that runs on this NAS is unreliable. I would not recommend this to anyone that assumes that an NAS is their secure back up. ... show more

  • Does the job
Color: 2-Bay, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM
I'm quite pleased with this Terra-Master NAS. Consider my rating a strong 4 stars, just shy of 5. It took me a while to get it set up properly but Tech support was very good. I initially fit it with one drive and then decided to add a second after I'd set up the first. This raised the issue of how they should be formatted -- as single drives or JBOD (just a bunch of drives). Stuff I found online (not from Terra-Master but other sources) was mutually contradictory. Some sources said that JBOD would give me access to each drive separately while Single Drive would treat both drives as one large driv, i.e., two 8TB drives would appear as one 16TB drive. Other sources said the exact opposite. Another issue is that there are different terms for the storage areas, with a nested hierarchy. None of that was readily apparent to me initially, which made the setup process fairly confusing. But tech support responded within 24 hours and provided me the information I needed to get everything up and running properly. I think that if I had decided from the get-go to set up the NAS with drives in both bays, things would have been simpler than first setting it up with one and then adding a second after the fact. By the way, to have each drive accessible as a separate drive location (e.g., two separate 8TB drives rather than a single 16TB storage area), the Single Drive formatting is the way to go. I mapped them as network storage locations and now have icons on my desktop for each drive. Once everything was set up, it's been completely straightforward to use them. While the documentation could be better for people like me who are less familiar with network storage protocols, tech support got me up and running and the drive works very well with a couple of Seagate NAS drives installed. Once everything is set up, the user interface is actually pretty slick and user friendly. It runs inside your web browser. There's also a utility program that can be used for managing the NAS but after setup, I don't think most users will need to access it. The NAS comes with a bunch of apps that can be downloaded and installed. Again, better documentation would help. While I suspect that people who do a lot of network stuff would be familiar with these apps, I wasn't and had to look up what they were individually. Turns out, I had no use for most of them but people in a business context well may. There's definitely a learning curve to setting up a NAS for the first time but I think Terra-Master does at least as good a job of preparing you for the process as their competitors do and their quality-to-cost ratio was very attractive. For me, even as is, the Terra-Master gets close to a 5-star rating. If the documentation were better, both for the setup and for the apps, it would be a solid 5 in my judgment. ... show more

  • Deceptive
Color: 2-Bay, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM
I bought this NAS to replace an older Zxyel NAS that had reached EOL. The UI is nice and the NAS does fit basic needs, but in retrospect, I either should have gotten a higher-end version that gave me more control over storage. The biggest problem I have with this device is how it assigns ownership to storage. I am consistently losing access to my media even though it's set to RW for everyone for all content. The device seems to want the storage owned by TimeMachine (even though AF is off) and denies permissions even to Unix users. There are also other aspects of the UI and management of storage that I dislike. For example, I can't add the second drive later to extend the existing storage or create an array. (or at least it's not documented anywhere) The documentation is lacking, so problems like this are hard to resolve. Would I buy another unit? I don't know. I like the hardware and I've seen posts where the default OS is replaced with TruNAS or Proxmox, just not with this model. ... show more

  • Maybe not the easiest to use, but an excellent value
Color: 2-Bay, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM
I had wanted a home network storage device for a long time. This is about the cheapest one available for a home user and if all you want is secure RAID 1 backup of your data, this will fill the bill. The user interface is not the most friendly and there is not a lot of explanation of what the various included apps are for or how to use them. I really need to spend more time working with this to see if I can't get more out of it, but I am happy in the knowledge that my irreplaceable photos and other data are more safe now than ever. ... show more
