Astronomy telescope for both adults and kids. Moon observation is pretty promising since the the tripod is well build in this price range class. Well handling scenic watching on the road trip as well. Would recommend, good value as a holiday gift.

Birdwatching? Animal watching? Just want to see what's on the other side of the lake? When I go hiking I like to do all of those things. I've always got a camera on me (other than my phone) as well. Carrying a pair of binoculars around my neck though has never been my thing. Recently though I thought about trying a monocular instead so when the opportunity came around to review one I thought I would give it a try. The Good: - The monocular itself feels very solid. The focus knob has just enough tension to make it easy to focus without being able to accidentally bump it and have everything to blurry. - Decent caps that hold on snuggly without fear that they'll fall off. - Standard Tripod mount (included tripod is ok but I used my own high end one) - Carry case with beltloop. - Decently clear lenses. - Phone attachment works well once you figure out how to use it. Attach your phone first and align the camera through the center of the hole before attaching it to the monocular. Much easier to line up. - Zoom is good enough for most casual observations. I did notice that on the cloudy day like today though that the image is a bit darker than expected. Hard to tell from my sample photos since the camera compensated for things a bit. The not so good but not necessarily bad. - Front cap is connected to the monocular so it won't fall off and doesn't have to be put down but the rear cap isn't attached. I dropped it several times before stuffing it in a pocket then forgetting about it. If you're using this on a tripod then being able to just leave the caps hanging would be ideal. - No way to attach a lanyard so you don't accidentally drop it. You can buy lanyard attachments that screw into the tripod mount though. I have a few for my other camera gear and they can be ordered here on Amazon. - Although the case fits the monocular just fine it does not have room for the phone attachment. If you want to bring both with you then you'll need a separate bag for the tripod and camera attachment. - Product description says that the monocular is "weatherproof" however I never found an IPX rating for it so I have no idea how it will hold up in cold and hot temps. I also didn't see anything about anti-fog so I'll be using camera grade anti-fog wipes on both lenses.. on the outside at least. - As stated above, the available light this can capture seems a bit lacking. Not sure if the advertised use of stargazing would work very well unless you're looking at the bright moon. If you really want to stargaze though I suggest an actual telescope or astronomy grade binoculars. Overall this is a nice monocular that will now be carried with me on my hiking adventures. Recommend if you are a casual user that just wants something like this to have at a sports event or a hike. ... show more

    • Perfect universal telephoto lens for smart phones and use as a small portable telescope
At first I wasn't sure what I was going to get in the package as the photos were not especially useful. But I took a chance and I'm glad I did. First, as a portable almost pocket size telescope this is really nice. I have a pair of 10x50 binoculars and I like those but there is no way to connect them to a smart phone to share the wonderful things I can see. When I saw this I hoped this would be a solution and it is. So first it's functionality as a telescope: This is stronger than 10 x 50 binoculars. Not a huge amount stronger but enough to be very noticeable. The lens is clear. Once focused it is easy to see. The down side is the lens is not quite as big as my 10 x 50 so while it magnifies better, the image is slightly darker. But it still makes a nice portable spotting scope, especially if you don't want the bulk of binoculars. This will work mostly in the daylight. As a telephoto lens: This is where this lens really shines. Since photos can easily be manipulated with software, the slight loss of light due to smaller lens will not make a huge difference in this regard. I was able to focus in on a stork that was 60 feet away on a roof which almost filled the screen. From ten feet away an egret's head completely filled the screen. With the bright Florida sun there was plenty of light for photography. A butterfly from twenty feet was sufficiently close that if you have a decent camera in your phone, say about 20mp or better, you should be able to print out a nice 8x10 photo with the butterfly filling the screen. In other words, while this won't do what some of the better professional telephoto lenses will do, it will go about half way there on less than 5% of the price and will suffice for 90% of most people's telephoto needs. Unfortunately it's a cloudy night so no photos of the moon yet. The component that connects the lens to a camera is very intuitive. I am not very good at figuring things out if they are complicated. I often have to read instructions three times to get it. This is very intuitive. I figured it all out just by looking at it. there is one part that goes on the eye piece after removing the removeable lens cap. Then there is a clam that fits probably all smart phones. Once you get the phone into the clamp you can slide it up and down or back and forth to position your camera lens in place. Turn your phone on and then access your camera. Then turn the focus knob on the lens until the desired item is in focus. It is that easy. So of course you need a tripod. This comes with a table top tripod but it should fit in a standard tripod socket, If this does not fit your full size tripod you should be able to attach it to your tripod with zip ties. That may sound crude but there are enough places to get ahold of to do that if needed. for me, I think most of the time the included table top tripod should work. You can choose between 5 inch legs or slide out the feet to make them 10 inches long. I have a very stable table in my yard so most of the time I will probably be using that though if you have a steady hand, in the daylight you may not need a tripod. The carrying bag only holds the lens and perhaps the tripod but NOT combined with the adapter and certainly not also your camera. But you should have no problem fitting all of the above in a small to medium size generic camera bag. All in all, for the price an versatility and functionality and quality, this is well worth the price so it gets 5 stars from me.     • Review for monoscope, not telescope
This review is for the monoscope - the listing has since been changed to a telescope, which I cannot attest to. As to the monoscope, it is really fun to look through and once you figure out that you need to line up the adapter on your phone before attaching it to the monoscope, it is really easy to use. There is a learning curve with getting things positioned and focused, but I can tell you that what I have been able to do so far is fantastic. I was able to zoom in on a house fire that was a block away. That's a really long way. You can see the firefighter checking the car that is parked in the driveway to see if anyone is inside of it. Without this amazing zoom, you would not be able to see him from a full block away, where I was located. I cannot wait for spring and summer, as my shrubs and hedge are now the regular home of baby birds. At first we only had Robin redbreasts but now we have a family of Cardinals that take up annual residence in the lilac shrub. I am super excited to be able to grab pictures of them and I won't need to get close to do so. I won't tell you the story of last summer when a baby cardinal ended up in my hair, sending me screaming across the lawn as it was learning to fly. Suffice to say I am glad to have them here, and want to see them, but not in my hair. LOL Thanks to this monocular I will be able to do so. ... show more
