For basic home or small business archiving and shared use, this is great choice. Based on articles and reviews, I added this unit with 2 Seagate 4TB drives. Installation, setup, interface , and network connection all easy and quick. Had an older HP n’as abt 10 years ago which crashed and was totally non-recoverable, so have shied away from this storage approach. With newest Synology OS (v7) I wonder why we never found more workable systems. Takes a bit of learning for some details of operation (still haven’t figured out Goodsych function, how to update stored folders, etc) but all the basics are quite straightforward. Setup was slightly confusing and relied on You Tube videos to get the job done, but once it was configured properly including my One Drive syncing it is a great piece of mind and works flawlessly behind the scenes. Would recommend product and seller.

I have setup two of these. One for me and one for a friend. Depending on what you want it can be a simple setup or complex. While this plays “out of the box” it also contains the full-service Synology DSM that allows setup for configuration of storage pools, security groups, backup strategy, package installation, remote access, etc. So, the system will allow the admin to do extensive customization of this unit to meet the user’s need. My advice: if you want to use this unit for anything other than basic OOTB configuration, spend time to understand how the different parameters you modify will effect the system before messing around under the hood. That said, mine has been working Flawlessly for 4 years ( other than having to switch out dying drives- which the system makes simple). Highly recommended. ... show more

UPDATE - upped from 2 stars to 3 stars After a couple of weeks struggling to get the NAS to perform adequately with what looked like lots of dropped connections, I checked the network cable that was supplied with the device and noticed that it had a kink in it - when I used it to connect to my laptop my expected download speed was only about 10% of what I would have expected. So, I replaced the ethernet cable and my backups started completing, albeit slowly - I have a 1GB switch and my first completing linux back up of about 2.5GB took three days to complete, but at least it is now completing. Three stars and not four due to the unexpected slowness - it's possible that there is a setting somewhere that will fix this, and there are many - this NAS is not for the faint-hearted but it does now seem to be solid. -- Prior 11/21/21 2 star review below ** After three weeks of owning this I still haven't managed to get it perform adequately To be honest I am really disappointed with the overall slowness of the device - I have a fast LAN and Wifi.and have the recommended Seagate hard drives with RAID. I was hoping to be able to seamlessly backup two windows machines, a Mac laptop, and a linux laptop, but other than the Mac, the Linux and Windows are glacially slow. For anyone considering buying this expecting a turnkey solution, please know that the settings are daunting - no plug-and-play here. Samba 'smb' protocol seems to be the problem but it's really hard to tell - by profession I'm a software engineer and I'm starting to think that maybe this is just how slow it is rather than anything I have done wrong setting it up. Even the Quick Connect that takes you to the administrative console (directly to the IP Address also) is tearing-your-hair out slow - sometimes just timing out with a message saying the serve is busy. If I haven't resolved this within a week or two, I'm just going to write off the ~$300 I spent and go with some other brand. ... show more
