Description

Rediscover this Newbery Medal–winning classic, a favorite of generations. Strawberries—big, ripe, and juicy. Ten-year-old Birdie Boyer can hardly wait to start picking them. But her family has just moved to the Florida backwoods, and they haven't even begun their planting. "Don't count your biddies 'fore they're hatched, gal young un!" her father tells her.Making the new farm prosper is not easy. There is heat to suffer through, and droughts, and cold snaps. And, perhaps most worrisome of all for the Boyers, there are rowdy neighbors, just itching to start a feud. The land was theirs, but so were its hardships.Teachers, grandparents, and homeschooling families continue to reach for Lois Lenski's Strawberry Girl. As one fan commented, a reason for its continued success is that it's "a touching, realistic tale of the power of neighborly love and kindness." Read more

  • An Excellent Glimpse at the life of people in the Florida of long ago
This would be an excellent book to be read to the kiddos. We don’t realize how hard life was 100 years ago.

  • Wholesome sweet perfection
This book is the second book in a Regional series of books written by Lois Lenski in 1945. It was the intention to capture the life of families and girls in their day to day life in the early 20th Century. This specific book follows a family as they make a life for themselves in Central Florida. What I liked: 1. The Story: There's something about a simple story and the description of the simple lives of children. Lenski spends the time to describe a Hen and her chicks and then turn around in the same chapter and talk about the brutality of fire. 2. The illustrations: The book has about 30 illustrations through out the book and were all drawn by the author. 3. The message: As a Christian I was amazed (and encouraged) to see how the conflict is resolved in this book. You don't see books that have a strong Christian(or any other religion for that matter) find literary success, but this book does it, and does it well. What I didn't like: 1. Ms. Lenski tried to be as authentic as she could with the telling of this book, down to the dialect the people spoke. It took some getting used to while reading, and while I appreciate her desire to be true to the people and the time, I think young readers will struggle with it today. This would be a great book for 9-10 year old readers. Strawberry Girl won the Newbery Medal in 1946 ... show more

  • Great classic for kids
I read this book as a child and ordered this copy for a grandchild. The gift of books allows children to discover historical information in a fun way and also helps kids to realize kids have an easier life these days but with different challenges. Glad they have printed an anniversary edition. Lois Lenski books are lovely. While ideal for a nine year old child, book levels can vary just as reading ability can vary with kids plus vocabulary levels with children are so different too. I assume this will be an easy read for my grandchild and she may learn new vocabulary words based on the time period of the story. ... show more

  • A favorite from childhood
Of course I remembered little else but the title. Glad the father in this one was a little bit better portrayed.

  • Classic!
Why read Lois Lenski? Her regional series describes a time and place few remember. It’s written so well and it’s a wholesome story. I’m a private librarian, and this book is very requested. I have a paperback so I was praying for a hardback but that meant collecting and that is costly. I’m shocked and hope they begin printing the whole series. The binding is amazing! The slipcover is true to the original. The illustrations are lovely and clear. The price is phenomenal! I rarely give five stars but this is absolutely worth it! ... show more

  • great read for a child or an adult revisiting childhood books
I read this as a girl- even did an oral book report and a shoe-box diorama with clothespin dolls. I'm retired now and reading some of the books I liked as a kid. I'd recommend sharing this book with a child. The life described was foreign to me as a kid, but knowing about other people/places/times is good for a child for many reasons. The story-telling still holds up. ... show more

  • Middle of the pack Newbery Winner
A decent solid story. Very "white" perspective on frontier Florida, and therefore a little dated. We are reading all the Newbery Award winning books we can get. I would say this isn't as good as Caddie Woodlawn, but is a lot better than Waterless Mountain.

  • so from time to time I enjoy picking up some juvenile fiction that I haven't read
I am doing the 2016 PopSugar reading challenge, and I chose this for a book based in my home state. I worked in the youth services department of a library for 6 years, so from time to time I enjoy picking up some juvenile fiction that I haven't read.Strawberry Girl is a classic, and I'm amazed that I haven't read it. It is set in Central Florida and centers around two families; one is a family who left Marion County, Florida to move a little further South - they have a sense of determination and enjoy self-sufficiency. However, their neighbors are living in poverty, largely due to the father's alcoholism. For a little bit, this short book got very heavy - but the end was really sweet and I really enjoyed it. ... show more
