  • Sterilite quietly changed plastic types - do not buy anymore if you need durability
Size: 15 gal Style: 6-Pack Pattern Name: Tote
Sometime in the last 12 months, Sterilite changed the material they used to produce these bins. They used to be extremely durable and sturdy with a very respectable weight limit for their size -- very true to its "industrial" moniker, as many other reviews point out. But with no change whatsoever in the marketing, Sterilite began using a thinner, weaker, and entirely different type of plastic with drastically reduced stability and durability. The old material was polypropylene (evident from the #5 PP recycling logo on the bottom), the same type of plastic used in coolers, trash bins, pitchers, car batteries, various types of fittings, and model aircraft. Things that need the strength. This material is naturally pretty stiff and resistant. The new material is low-density polyethylene (#4 LDPE), which is naturally very flexible. This is the same plastic used in tubing, flexible snap-on lids, squeezable food containers, etc., but its biggest use is in all sorts of bags -- produce bags, bread bags, trash bags, etc. Mostly things that are meant to be flexible. (Google for "plasticology 101" for a site explaining the varying durability characteristics between plastics. The content is not mine in any way, but it is helpful and thorough.) As an example of the stunning weakness of this newer version, one of the totes I just purchased was bowed out on all 4 sides to the point that I could press against either side of each of its walls to bow/pop it out in the opposite direction. The sides are literally curved, except around the corners. Bottom line: DO NOT PURCHASE these if you need a durable bin/tote. This is by no means an industrial strength container anymore, and calling them industrial should be considered false advertising. ... show more

  • There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza
Size: 12 gal Style: 6-Pack Pattern Name: Tote
Purchased yesterday, Amazon delivered in front of my garage instead of the porch on a rainy day, not happy. (This is not why I give this 1 star, I'll rate delivery separately) I understood why when I tried to move the box, the manufacturer only taped the box instead of glueing and it was falling apart and very awkward to carry without hand holes in the shipping box. I get over it and move it into my garage and unpack the containers. Then I find that 2 of the 6 containers have holes in the bottom from the injection mold being removed. I understand that these are not waterproof containers but come on, you are telling me that the manufacturer didn't see this? Molding, Assembly, and packing didn't see this? Seeing as how they were the last two in the packing box I think someone did see it and ignored it. ... show more

  • Sturdy, Firm, & Durable
Size: 27 gal Style: 4-Pack Pattern Name: Tote
These totes have not failed me during professional and personal moving endeavors. Below are some pros/cons to highlight the features- feel free to read a bit more about the spec(s) & definitely check out the Sterilite website if you're in search of videos of this product. Pros: • Firm handle clasps. • Strong interior. • Designed for latching and vertical stacking. • Deep tub that met described measurements. • Packaging was ideal paired with precautionary labeling for “Handle with care, fragile”. Cons: • None thus far. Additional notes: I would recommend airing them out to remove the “new smell”, should the purchaser(s) find it overpowering and/or to avoid having the items stored in the bins smell of the like. To those that complain about the bin(s) being fragile or breaking, it IS true that these bins are others of similar build are prone to breakage if a sharp object is stored inside and hits the edge, these are dropped from a significant height with enough weight inside, or their mishandled during packaging. I've yet to experience operational failure while using them to move tech equipment around. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1466 - 27 Gallon Industrial Tote • Overall Assembled Size: 30 1/2" x 20 5/8" x 15 1/4" • Rugged construction with robust non-slip grip latches • Tight fit drip-resistant lid provides maximum protection against items getting wet • Deep recessed lids offer secure stacking capabilities helping to maximize available storage space • Grooved areas and keyhole design in lid, provide options for tie downs when transporting items ... show more

  • Cheaper to buy locally than online!
Size: 15 gal Style: 6-Pack Pattern Name: Tote
These containers are very durable, strong and easy to organize. I can put clothes, tools, home electronics and so much more. How do I know? I already own two of these and 6 of the far more larger gallon versions (better for large wardrobes and collectibles) that are available at your local Target and Walmart store at a cheaper price. Furthermore, lose the waiting time and get these containers right away. Overall these containers are wonderful and I would recommend these containers only if you buy them locally in your area. They are far more expensive and the waiting time is horrible! ... show more

  • The most exciting thing for a 37 year old dad.
Size: 15 gal Style: 6-Pack Pattern Name: Tote
I needed a way to store all the stuff one accumulates for no reason over a lifetime... and Christmas lights. I tried the Homedepot black and yellow tubs. They were ok... not rugged and surprisingly brittle. These bins are made of higher quality plastic and feature locking lids... I must if you need to secure a child or animal for a few minutes during hide-n seek... (I'm kidding). They make great containers for my patrol car (minivan) and are all-around dependable. The locking lids are a great safety feature while you're balancing on unstable objects while retrieving them from on top of your tallest shelf. To top it all off, it was exciting to open the box at home when the Postal Service delivered them. ... show more
