Top Amazon Reviews

  • The best gaming headset I've ever owned
This is going to be a PS5 centric review since I don't use the headset for any other platform. Also, I've only ever owned one other "premium" headset so much of my opinion will be based on my previous experience. The Steel Series Arctis 9 Wireless connect to the PS5 via a usb dongle. The controls are primarily on the right ear cup, with the standard power on, bluetooth button (for pairing or pausing content) and a volume wheel. The mic is retractable and doesn't include a windshield, but I added a spare one I ordered off Amazon and it fit just fine. Right now I'm using the Wicked Cushions cooling gel ear pads as I found the stock pads a bit too thin for my taste and the Wicked Cushions made what was already a really comfortable headset about 10x better. I can wear these for long sessions without any discomfort whatsoever. If I had to do it again, I don't know if I'd buy the cooling gel version as they actually seem to increase the heat on my ears after a half hour. Still very comfortable to wear. Sound Profile This is not a bass heavy headset. If you're looking for a headset that's going to vibrate on your head every time an explosion goes off, this is not for you. Initially, I was unimpressed by the sound. It all seemed rather flat. But after installing the companion software (which is Mac compatible), I played around with the EQ presets (they save to the headset) and found one that really worked for me (it's called Smiley). And while the bass still isn't overwhelming, I do enjoy the more even highs, mids mixed with the bass. In fact, I really prefer the sound of this as opposed to a more bass heavy headset such as the Turtle Beach 700s. And don't get me wrong, the bass is fine and does the job, which is what I want. I'd say this is more of a fine wine that you appreciate for the taste as opposed to a cheap wine that'll get you buzzed. Comfort Again, very very comfortable, but I am using 3rd party ear cushions. The stock ear cushions are fine, but not quite thick enough for my tastes. After upgrading to WC cooling gel cushions, these things are like a cloud on my head. And I have a big head btw and I find the amount of clamp and fit to be just right. The headband uses a ski google strap of sorts to accommodate your head (as opposed to most other headsets that you manually click the headband to expand or retract it) and it took some getting used to, but now I can't imagine going back. I simply put them in the desired position and they stay that way. Durability There's a lot of posts on various forums complaining that the hinges are prone to breaking so while it's only been a week, so far so good. My last headset developed a hairline crack on the hinges that eventually lead to the ear piece detaching from the headband, but I dont' see that being an issue here so long as you remove the headset by the ear cups and not by the hinges. Connectivity This is probably the most impressive function of the headset thus far. The connection is rock solid. I can go to various rooms within 15 feet of my console and it never loses connection. This was such a constant issue with my Penrose that I almost got accostomed to just randomly losing connection, but that doesn't happen with these. Super impressed thus far. Bluetooth Very easy to pair and obviously it's a Bluetooth connection so it's equally stable and consistent. My only complaint is that there's no independent volume knob for the connected bluetooth device, so I've taken to lowering the game's volume in the PS5 UI menu by a few clicks which then allows for me to use the volume knob to get the right levels. You'll have to play around with it a bit to find the right volume level for you, but it's not difficult. Mic Quality The mic is labeled "discord certified," but thus far no one has been wowed by the quality of the mic, but then again is this really important? I feel like so long as people can hear your call outs and understand you, that's good enough. The mic is fine, which is all I really need. Battery They advertise as giving over 20 hours of juice and I've yet to put it to the test. I usually game while listening to a podcast or music over my bluetooth device and I've yet to have any battery issues, although I do charge them when not in use. Complaints Nothing major, just some minor complaints. Again, there's no independent volume wheel for the bluetooth connected device. This would've been great, but simply lowering the overall volume in the settings by a few clicks gave the right mix of blutooth & game volume for me. After you turn the headset off, you still have to go into the PS5 menu to change the sound output to your tv/stereo from the headset. If you don't, you won't get any sound...even if the headset is off. Kinda weird but the pros outweigh this for me. It's a micro usb compatible charge port as opposed to usb c. I just don't get how they decided to go with this when usb c is so superior and prevalent at this point. You have to use the companion software on PC to get access to all the various sound settings, but the settings save to the headset so maybe find someone that owns a pc and use theirs to open up all the options? That aside, I'm super happy with them. 9.5/10. ... show more

  • Nice two-channel headphones
These are pretty decent headphones. I'm no audiophile, but I do game in them and the sound is good enough for me. It's nice that they have both 2.4Ghz and Bluetooth connections, and that you can have both hooked up at the same time, so you could game or listen to videos, while still be connected to your phone for calls or other voice apps. The major downside is that the dongle for the 2.4Ghz has a long (3ft) cord to the USB plug, so if you want to keep your headset playing, you have to keep that dangling dongle plugged in, which is a little annoying for a laptop. That's probably a design limitation, because the dongle is about the size of a double-stuff Oreo, so just plugging it into the side of your computer might have been too cumbersome. So putting a cord on it was probably the right call, but they don't show in the pictures, so I thought it was worth mentioning. There's also this other feature where the headset accepts different channels for "chat" and "game" and there's a blending wheel on the left earpad where you can decide the ratio of what you want to hear more. That's a nice feature, but the tradeoff is that in Windows there's now two different sound outputs to choose from. In fact, when I plugged them in, I got three or four new output options in the Windows Volume Mixer. And Its not clear what the differences are. So there's a bit of confusion, but it wasn't hard to make it work. The ski goggles headband design is really clever and very comfortable. I've only had them for a month or two, and the elastic is starting to sag just a touch. That said, because of the design, it should be super easy to replace with just about any fabric choice you want, so long as you can operate a hot glue gun and some Velcro. ... show more

  • I think I am done with SteelSeries in general.
I got on board with the Arctic 7 model and enjoyed that quite a bit until near the end of life (Still works, just the audio quality - particularly communicating with the mic - took a bit of a noticeable dive). I've tried a few different models from SteelSeries, but only this model seemed to have the same appeal as the Arctis 7 (Not a fan of having a DAC constantly attached to the headset with a wire and heavy control block tugging on the connection port). Besides the inversion of the charge port and volume controls from one side to the other side of the headset, this model seemed as acceptable as the Arctis 7. Now onto the ongoing, continuous problems that have simply made this headset UNACCEPTABLE: Connectivity - Dongle: About 90% of the time when I wake my PC from sleep or perform a reboot (NOT shutdown), the Dongle will NOT power back up and must be unplugged and reconnected before it will turn back on and reconnect the headset. EVERY time I sleep or restart the PC, this is practically guaranteed to happen (It's encouraged me to leave the PC on or shutdown, nothing else). Connectivity - General: This is what prompted me to write this review today, having just happened. Randomly, the headset will sound the audio cue of powering off and turn itself off on it's own as if I held down the power button to turn it off. This can happen several times a day and is probably THE most infuriating problem with the headset right now (Middle of gaming, watching a show, communicating with a friend and my audio channel just goes dead for a few minutes while I try powering back on). SteelSeries Sonar: You had to know this was coming. I hate everything about this software I haven't even looked too deeply into it to see how it COULD be better because of the sheer amount of problems it introduces out of the gate. I just want to turn it off and continue using as is without it. First and foremost (And THANK YOU for fixing it!) Sonar STILL messes with my designated audio channels from time to time. Previously, it would reset all the audio channels when I'd restart/sleep the PC, I'd have to open the software and manually designate the software audio channels to play properly, otherwise it had them ALL feeding on the SAME channel! Now it remembers what I set those channels to, but when I swapped out a monitor over a burnt out screen, it acknowledged the new hardware in Sonar and for some unexplainable reason, changed ALL the audio channels to the speaker channel that was built into the old monitor that is no longer connected to the computer... all the channels were being piped to a speaker the system no longer had access to...completely ignored the headset....why....? WTF.. Battery life: Out of the box, yes, this works great, sometimes several consecutive days without a charge! Then, especially as of late, there are those times I charge it overnight and go to use it the next day and the indicator is still red for battery life. Within 20 or so minutes, I'm getting the charge headset audio cue. It's... maddening. I'm charging this thing several times a day anymore. Comfort: Worth mentioning, the Arctis 7 and now this model (Arctis 9) are among the more comfortable to wear models I've tried and I'll specifically point out the Game-DAC models as an example of AWFUL quality ear muffs; they leave my ears hurting, itching and in pain within an hour of use regardless how much I adjust them. I HIGHLY recommend looking into replacement cushions for the ears with SteelSeries models. The Arctis 7 and 9 are better than others I've tried, but even these I would consider immediately replacement for comfort. Functionality: (Looking at you again, Sonar) You know what was awesome about the Arctis 7? I just plugged it in and it worked, I had the audio control and the channel control that allowed me to differentiate between CHAT and GAME volumes to communicate with teammates. It. Just. Worked. Since Sonar's release, this basic function REQUIRES playing around with the Sonar program for this channel differentiating to work as it did before. I've already mentioned several of the problems with this software and it forces me to use it for the proper functioning of the hardware that.... arguably worked before without it. Did I mention Sonar has to startup with the PC and run in the background for the headset's functionality? There may be a small detail or two that I've left out, but I believe I've covered all the big items that make/break this headset for me. I wasn't sure if I just got a goof-ball model and had special conditions attached to this headset or what, but seeing a lot of the same buzz words sprinkled amongst other reviewers... I grimaced with vindication. Sorry not sorry, SteelSeries, but I'm out.. you screwed this one up. ... show more
