And if it's your first time, this is a really interesting movie with Carpenter working in a Spielberg vein to great effect. Terrific transfer and restoration by the Shout Factory team here, and it's loaded with extras.

great movie always one of my all time favorite movie great quality from shout factory 1. high resolution transfer 2. Fantastic HDR 3. DTS MASTER SURROUND with comentary nice to know they cared about the quality of this movie.. worthy to add to your library but keep the original so you can compare

    • A Kinder Gentler Carpenter.
I enjoyed this movie for a long time and decided finally to get it on Blu-ray. Not disappointed. The story is simple enough. An alien comes to earth, but is shot down by the US military and ends up in Wisconsin. He finds a grieving widow, takes DNA from her husband's hair and constructs a body which is the identical duplicate of her late husband. Together they go on a road trip to the alien's rendezvous point while trying to evade government agents. I call this "Kinder Gentler Carpenter" because it was a departure for John Carpenter, who at the time had a reputation towards horror films. After receiving intense backlash for his gore-fest The Thing, it was time to try something a little better and nicer. Hence, Starman. The movie itself is very good. really great performance by Jeff Bridges and also by Karen Allen. Special effects are pretty good for the time. The sequence where the alien goes from baby to adult could have been a little better, but it was good for the time. I also really like the music score ( one of the very few Carpenter movies where he didn't write the score). Blu-ray package is good too. Shout! Factory does it again. Nice picture and sound quality. Not many special features, but it does have a decent behind the scenes documentary and commentary by Carpenter and Bridges. It's a little confusing as to why Shout! Factory ran this title under the Scream Factory banner when it's not a horror movie, but it must be due to Carpenter's reputation as a Horror movie director. Aside from that minor issue, all else is good. Highly recommended for fans of science fiction and John Carpenter. ... show more

This is a very good movie, and the blu ray edition is even better than the dvd, which I also have. Sometimes there isn't a great deal of difference but this movie looks exceptional. I'm glad that I upgraded to blu ray.

Jeff Bridges. Science Fiction. Karen Allen. Science Fiction. Charles Martin Smith. Science Fiction. John Carpenter (Director). Science Fiction. Jack Nitzsche (Music Composer). Science Fiction. Get the picture? This is a CLASSIC mid-80's effort that holds up today. The scifi aspects hold up because there isn't the typical over the top effects, which age poorly in later decades. Not dependent on the effects...dependent on the storyline and the acting, directing, and music. ... show more

I have loved this movie since childhood. I was thrilled to see the Blu-Ray of this film coming out, and with an audio commentary with John Carpenter & Jeff Bridges. If you have never seen this before, check it out - Great old Sci-Fi film.
