Every young wannabe farmer and big machine lover knows all about tractors and harvesters, but what about the sprayer? Large farmers know that “spraying fertilizers on crops can help them grow strong.” Not all farms use sprayers, but many have big machinery to help. Chomp, chomp, chomp! Insects can do a lot of damage to crops, but when some chemicals are sprayed it can help. You can check out the different sprayer sizes by looking at pictures in this book. One farmer is using a little sprayer while another uses a big one. The bigger sprayers are large, but the “biggest kind of sprayer is a self-propelled sprayer.” If you’ve seen big harvesters, you can easily see that the sprayers look a bit alike. They have big tires, a cab, lights, and a steering wheel. So what is different? For one thing you can easily see that “a chemical tank sits on the sprayer.” Chomp, chomp, chomp! The sprayer is going to spread herbicides or insecticides to get rid of those pests. They also can spray fertilizers to help crops grow. Mmmmm! Sounds like sprayers are big machines at work on a farm. You’ll learn all about them in this book. Do organic farmers use chemicals on their crops? If you don’t know the answer to that one, you’ll just have to read this book! As a beginning nonfiction chapter book, young wannabe farmers and big machine buffs will love this book. Anyone who’s around preschoolers know that once they start playing with toy vehicles of any type, they’re hooked. It’s a natural progression for them to want to read and learn more about working farm machinery. They will also learn the basic setup of a nonfiction book, something that will carry with them as their reading skills advance. This book pops with colorful photographs of sprayers and has captioned material that adds to their knowledge.
