The world building created in this story definitely left me wanting more. I'd usually wait to read a series until it had more than one book, but the tickytocky app got me. Can't wait for the next one.

    • I wish this book didn't have to end!
You know when you're so immersed in a book so much that the end kind of sneaks up on you? That was Spades for me. It starts with a mystery, gets into the spice pretty quickly and you immediately get a grasp on the essence of the main characters. There's a moment of miscommunication which is just frustrating enough that you want to shout at the main characters but you have a feeling it will all work out...then BAM, action and panic in true Charlie Nottingham style. I love that the author has written characters that have flaws and angst and trauma that though I have not experienced myself, is so relatable. The most important story lines wrap up in a way that is satisfactory enough that if you are hesitant about starting a whole series you can still enjoy this book as a standalone. Final Rating: 4.75\5 stars Spades is the first book in a new dark fantasy series that takes places in the same universe as Charlie's other series (I think the fandom has dubbed it the Charlie-verse). You don't have to have read any of her other series to read this one (although if you do you get some fun references and Easter eggs). I loved this one! We have Brooke (witch\guardian hybrid) a librarian with serious parental trauma, who is looking for her little sister's missing friend. And we have Declan (wolf shifter). A bar owner who loves his sick Mother. After a one night stand the two are shocked to discover they are Par Animarum (soulmates). And the rest of the book is about them navigating how to deal with this, as well as the mystery of the missing girl. I think the mystery aspect of this story was a little weak. But Oh oh man....the spice and the character work in this was great! I'm really looking forward to book 2 when it releases! ... show more

The Eluding Destiny universe is full of great story lines, Charlie has ensured that every angle is consistent and continues to build out the characters and connect the pieces with each book. Even more, she ensures that anyone can pick this series up, knowing nothing about the world, and still get a great read. The foreshadowing of answers on connected series within this book still intrigues someone who HAS read all the rest and serves all who read. This has got to be book 20+ in this universe and nothing is repetitive, nothing is redundant, you connect with each character just as you do the originals which is a great testament to this authors immense skill. ... show more

Spades felt like a quick read because I didnt want to put it down. I like how reading the different perspectives feels like being in different minds, not the same as the author. Its hard watching relatable characters do the same wrong thing I wouldve done. Oh and not too many spicy scenes... but the spice level of the ones that are there... is blush worthy. And instantly feel in love with her. This is one store coming to life it the world she has designed. I adore this world Decan and Brooke are a interesting story so far. I thoroughly enjoy the book. Another good one Charlie! I do have to say though that I kinda hate Brook, and I hope she grows as the series progresses.
