  • Melancholy etched in nostalgia
Remember after you finished all your exams but the semester hadn't ended yet ? and you went out with friends to celebrate surviving another year. Summer was going to be great, you look over at your friend and they gave you a look. And you thought man we are never single at the same time but then her bf came over with a pitcher and your gf wanted to dance and you thought screw it. Next year you had work and she was busy trying to get an internship and before you knew it you had graduated and your boss was kind of a dick and you didn't see her until new year and then it was too awkward to bring up anything because her grandmother had just died and she was crying. And you never saw her again, she decided to teach english in Japan for a year and you tried to keep in touch but your boss was just such a douche and you started dating again and lost track of her until you read this book. "The memory of whatever spark you had is rusted, corroded, hardly maintained and scarcely revisited. This was no great affair, this thing. This was no tragic heartbreak. This was just another thing that happened in a long series of things that happened." - Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory ... show more

  • Phenomenal, funny, and moving collection
The stories vary in style, tone, structure, and message but each is full of rich language infused with humor that makes reading feel effortless. There’s an undercurrent of magic realism in many of the short stories that transforms the worlds into curious new places but the shrieking choruses and opposite doors and presidential chimera never obscure the heart and power of the piece. I’m a big fan of Bojack Horseman, so the wistful wit feels familiar but there’s just a lot here. This collection is focused on love but not merely romantic love, and that struck me over and over while reading. I can’t recommend this collection enough. ... show more

  • Two thumbs up from a couples therapist
As a couples therapist, I traffic in the world of love and relationships. Each of the short stories in this book applies an incredible (usually metaphorical) view of the nuances, joys, trials, and tribulations of relationships--romantic or otherwise. I will also add that I have always intentionally avoided short stories because I was worried that I would get invested in the characters only for it to end. But each of these are well-paced, impactful, and leave you going, "hmmm," afterwards. It's quite possible that it's changed my perspective on short story collections forever. I'm also now motivated to watch Bojack Horseman. Raphael is clearly brilliant. Please order and read this book. You won't regret it. ... show more

  • Sardonic, poignant, and what everyone needs
Thank you for providing your thought-provoking perspective Raphael. Your storytelling abilities are smart, witty, yet touching at the most unexpected moments. You don't need to use gigantic words to get your point across. Instead you do it in a more realistic, painfully familiar fashion. I was able to relate to so many of your short stories. People don't generally talk about their emptiness, weakness, or what wounds them most. Providing this insight allows us to feel less alone and more connected to the human experience on many leveld. I read this at a voracious pace - a winner by my standards. ... show more

  • Worth every cent you spent
This is the first time that I ever write reviews on Amazon. It is pretty telling about the quality of the book. Bob-Waksberg said that half of the stories were written before he met his wife, during which he was convinced that he will end up alone. I can see that. I can see the deepest sense of loneliness and longing for companionship in some stories. I can see how love is painfully tantalizing, and yet so far away. Half of the stories were written after he met his wife and his heart became whole again. I can see that. I can see how some of the stories are written with the deepest sense of romantic and optimistic views of love. I can see how love is exhilaratingly fresh and healing. ... show more

  • Great, great short stories
I love this book!! I bought it right after it came out when one of my favorite radio shows was interviewing the author and reading excerpts- laughing hysterically the whole time. It's a hoot and so universal- even when it gets into the fantastical. Wish I had more time to edit this. This book lovely and so funny- my snarky teenage daughter loves it too- it's her sense of humor. I love how it seems to capture all of my bad relationships and also an even worse version of all of my bad relationships. You know that moment when your relationship is driving over the cliff and you start to imagine, well- it could be worse... These stories capture the worst versions. The writing is superb! ... show more

  • Bravo my dude.
You know how your friends tell you to watch that one show because it's really funny but you don't watch it because you don't like comedy because the idea of forced laughter makes you uncomfortable? Then you finally watch the show and you realize the laughter wasn't forced because the material is so absurd and you keep finding yourself saying: "that's so stupid" but in a really good way because everything about the show is stupidly funny? That's what this book is like. I love it and I'm all about what this book has going on. ... show more
