  • Good product - bad instructions
Very important - if you have 4 door the J-hooks fit to the side; just where the rear windows begin to curve. Putting together the frame is not very Difficult, however instructions seem to complicate it. The entire frame is assembled with roll-pins in a slide-in type design. You slip pads over the frame supports to protect the top and freedom panels. (Bungees included) I did install legs and wheels as my top was on the floor of my garage. I was able to easily hook it to the hoists and it rolled right into a plumb positio. Then I simply hoisted straight up. I saw a lot of negative comments regarding the speed and jerkyness of the winch operation. I tried it first directly to the cable terminal hook - and it was really fast and jerky. However, a pull is included. Simply remove the main bolt and side fasteners and thread the cable through. Then reassemble the pulley and hook the terminal hook to the hole in the side of the hoist. In this configuration, it was smooth as butter. In all, I’m very satisfied. The instructions suck, but if you have a modicum of technical skills you’ll be fine. Unlike the instructions suggested. I test fitted the mounting support and marked and drilled holes. Then assembled the hoist to the mounting support and bolted in using an impact driver. To simply this entire process I rented an indoor scaffolding from Home Depot for $32 ... show more

  • Good: 1
Good: 1.I currently have this hoist installed in my garage. 2. I use it often. 3.My wife has used it a few times. 4.It makes removing and installing the tops on my 4 door and 2 door Jeeps a simple one person job. 5.I have left my JKU hardtop suspended for weeks with no issues. Just make sure it's mounted well to rafters or studs. 6.I would buy it again. Bad: 1.The first hoist motor was defective, but it was replaced. 2.It lifts and lowers quickly, practice with the hoist to be comfortable before scratching your nice painted hard top. You can use the included block and tackle to slow the speed. 3.I haven't tried the legs, so no comment on that. 4.The biggest concern I have is the way the back hook has to be removed and inserted between the lift gate glass and hardtop every time. I'm concerned I may drop the hook and break the glass. This should have been engineered better. I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for". And this hoist system is worth about $300. ... show more

  • its ok
with some modifications it will be great but as of now it just ok. I have an 88 YJ there is no attachment for the back so window has to stay up and cant use the legs so their worthless had to drill another hole was really back heavy. Plan on taking the double hook and cutting it down to fit mine

  • It works okay I guess... lol
The winch itself works great!! It is easy to install and easy to operate. The frame that goes over your hardtop on the other hand could be a lot better!! I have the two door wrangler and the hooks that go up underneath in the front aren’t terrible idea ended up modifying and using straps with carabiners instead!! Took lots of modifications to get it working ideally to wear the top was lifted level and to where I didn’t have to worry about it being damaged. The overall concept of their design is good but nothing is plug-and-play!! I would consider this nothing more than parts for you to use but with the content that your name to invest more time and money to make it better! ... show more

  • Middle of the road
You get a lot of "stuff" in this kit. Despite instructions that could use improvements, its not terribly tough to put together. That said, all of the weight of the top is supported by two front hooks that will bend the first time you use them and a rear hook that's tricky to get in. I'd buy it again, just worth knowing that you get what you pay for. I had hopes of storing this near the ceiling via the pulley system and have never trusted it to be up that high, so I use the included legs/casters to keep it nice and low to the ground. Not ideal from a space perspective, but it is easy and quick for the money. ... show more

  • It’s ok. Not perfect but I do like it.
I would buy again. It is a little rough with the movement up and down and the stand legs don’t stay still very well, but I do like it. You could make this with a hoist from Harbor Freight but it would not save you much money.

  • Dissatisfied
I am pretty upset with the design of this product. I own a 1999 Jeep TJ and have several aftermarket parts. The winch is great however the hoist frame (or at least the back half) is the worst design I have ever seen. Did Smittybilt even try it out? Who puts a hook between the glass and top as a lift point? I have yet to figure out how the hook to hold the top stays in place and at the same time install the leg to roll the top around. Additionally I had to drill a new hole in the frame because the balance point was way off (the top is back heavy which is to be expected) They really didn’t give this design any thought whatsoever. ... show more
