  • Excellent product
Model: Smart Oil Gauge
Installed easily and does everything I would hope for. After about one years use I had to change the batteries. The seller of the replacement batteries on Amazon was NOT Smart Oil. After a couple of weeks the replacement batteries went dead. I called Smart Oil and spoke to the tech Hunter, who was really helpful. At their expense Hunter sent me two new batteries, which resolved the problem I was having. The Smart Oil sensor is real good product and if you have a problem Smart Oil does business the old fashion way by answering a phone with a live person. Thank you Hunter. ... show more

  • Well Made, great support, unique
Model: Smart Oil Gauge
It took me a few cycles of my oil tank to appreciate this product. It provides accurate information on an easy to understand application. The only drawback is that when the tank is full, the reading is not accurate. Not to be too technical, but their support rep explained it has something to do with the sensing device being too close to the surface level of the fuel in the tank. For example, my tank is 275 gallons. I have to fill it to 235 gallons maximum in order to get an accurate reading. Today was the first time I filled it to only 235 (again, this was based on information from their tech support). The result was a dead on reading of the 160 gallons that was delivered. I was impressed. Tech support explained that there is an algorithm that corrects the inaccuracy of the device when the tank is filled (and the beam is too close to the surface in the tank). I have not tested the algorithm yet, but I will update my review when I do. Despite the negative, I highly recommend this product. My review would not be as positive if technical support hadn’t taken the time to explain the workings of the product to me. Great tech support. ... show more

  • Fire Hazard and Wifi Issues.
Model: Smart Oil Gauge
No matter what I did I could not connect to wifi and stay connected. I moved my router, restarted my router, turned off and on, etc. My router is not even that far from the tank (which is in the basement). I finally connected, went down to install it and bam…no wifi again. I then moved the router as close as it would go and finally got it to connect. I called my service guy to install after I filled the tank. He said no way does he even recommend this. It’s got lithium ion batteries, which by the way he said have to be replaced constantly, and the device is not even UL certified. He said he’s strongly against installing the device due to the risk involved with this type of batteries on a tank of oil…huge fire hazard and not worth the risk. I told him to go ahead since I already bought the thing but lo and behold, as soon as we go to install it…no freaking wifi AGAIN. We got back on wifi, and put it on. The reading was not even accurate even with trying to troubleshoot. Between connection problems, massive fire risk due to lithium ion batteries on an oil tank…and a device that is not even UL certified..and completely inaccurate, no thanks. I am returning it. There are also too many bad reviews about how inaccurate the readings are with it, and I’m not the only one with the connection issues. I called my service guy again three days later after the reading was still incorrect and had him remove the device. Nice waste of money all around with the cost of the device and the cost of a service call. ... show more

  • This is how tanks should be gauged.
Model: Smart Oil Gauge
Update: 5 years now and I will need to change the batteries again soon. The accuracy continues to be very good. I have run the tank nearly empty and the delivery driver said I probably had about 5 gallons left. I show off the graphs to people whenever someone mentions probably needing oil. At least two have then gone out and bought their own. Update: After nearly two years it is still working well. I changed the batteries once, after about 18 months, and it just continued where it left off a few days earlier. I probably check once a week in the winter. I have email alerts set up for 1/4 and 1/8, refilled, and high use. In the winter I burn up to five gallons a day. The 1/8th notification is about a working week in the winter. I ignored it once and learned how to bleed the oil line and restart the burner. The gauge accurately reports level when empty. This has done everything I expected, or wanted. This is a very satisfying piece of home automation. My two favorites are this and the WiFi garage light switch, I use that more, but this is more important. Seems to be working well. I have no clue how accurate it is, but I am sitting at my desk 60 miles from home and I know I have 193.6 gallons of oil in my 275 gallon tank. Even if I was standing looking at it I couldn't know that. I expect it is within ten percent, I won't have any way of knowing until I get more oil delivered, and that won't be for some time. If I don't report back then the numbers must have matched quite closely. The only problem I had with it was nothing to do with the product, installation would have been easy if some fool hadn't walled in the tank, so I had to stand on a ladder and stretch along the top of the tank. Other than the awkward position the installation was easy. I linked the gauge to WiFi in the comfort of my living room and then went down into the basement. I unscrewed the plug from one of the two spare skin fittings and carefully cleaned the old pipe dope from round the hole as I went, don't want to drop that inside. I liberally coated the threads with good quality thread compound that is rated for oil pipes and then carefully threaded the gauge in and tightened it down with a pipe wrench. Returning to the lounge I found that the tank was reporting 100% full... well... that's because it only measures a few times a day. Realistically you can't make any use of a more frequent measure so why waste the battery power. After six hours I checked again and found I was down to 209 gallons. Over the next few days it went down to 208. Apparently I use about 0.3 gallons per day in the summer. Who knows that sort of thing? I can even see the higher rate of use in the morning when we have showers. ... show more
