This is a very beautiful 4/4 SKYVN102(PTTVN101) student violin package that comes complete with 1 Brazilwood bow, 1 lightweight triangular violin case and 1 rosin. This violin is professionally set up and ready to play, beautiful oil varnished, solid spruce top and highly flamed maple back, sides, neck and scroll. Alloy tailpiece comes with four (4) fine tuner. Austrian rosin cake is included. Bow has double pearl eye, genuine unbleached Mongolian horsehair, nice light weight case and rosin. It also comes with a new fitted bridge and strings, as well as a lightweight rubber mute. Great sound. Lightweight case has rain proof canvas exterior and shoulder straps with sheet music pocket and accessory compartment. Not only am I relearning how to play, but the basic state of the instrument is also teaching me how to restring, tune and maintain the pegs. I strongly recommend getting peg drops or it'll never stay in tune.

When I bough this, I was most concerned about whether it had a bass bar with convexly curved bouts (it does), a sound post (it does), and whether or not the tuning pegs would slip or hold (they want to slip without employing a few tricks). I was also concerned about sound (it sounds rather bright with the strings that came with it), and whether the materials were really as described (they're NOT, hence the low rating) SPECIFICALLY The "maple back and spruce top" are most definitely basswood. The body functions as a resonator, but doesn't have the tonal quality of actual maple and spruce. The "high quality shoulder rest" doesn't want to stay on the body. It will stay if you mess with it enough, but only just barely, and the pad is a very dense foam, only slightly more comfy than the bare violin. I'll probably fold up a towel or something to make my own rest. The "alloy" tailpiece is actually plastic with some alloy bits in it where the fine-tuning threads are. Functional, but not really alloy. Nonetheless, if you want a violin-shaped object that makes violin-like sounds without breaking the bank, this will serve the purpose. ... show more
