  • Engine works well, but be careful!
We bought this motor for our 17' sailboat to get us in and out of the harbor, and it has *mostly* done a good job on that front. First, the positives. It starts without issue every time and since it is air cooled, you can easily test it out in your backyard. Now for the downsides. Both the fuel lines and the the wires connecting to the kill switch are very flimsily attached. On multiple occasions (Note, we have only used this motor 6-7 times), either the fuel lines or the electric lines got disconnected. These have very different outcomes when you are trying to start the motor or trying to stop it. If the fuel lines are disconnected, you will be pumping gas into the water as you try to get the engine started, while if the electric lines get disconnected, you will be pressing the kill switch to no avail and may have to jerk out the fuel lines to get the engine to stop! (Note, you can also touch the disconnected electric lines together to kill the engine--I figured this out the second time it happened to us). This, however, was the worst part. On our 6th trip out (note, this would equate to around an hour's worth of running), the motor housing came COMPLETELY disconnected from the shaft. There are SIX bolts that hold the motor housing to the shaft section and they ALL fell out after only an hour or so of operation. Fortunately for us, we were basically back at the dock when this happened, but the motor separated completely from the shaft when I put it into my car to fix. Needless to say, this is NOT what you want to happen when you are out on the water. I was able to get all the bolts replaced (I used locktite this time!) and was able to successfully use the motor again, but definitely keep an eye on those six bolts if you buy this motor. So, all of that said, I would still recommend buying this motor. It starts and runs dependably (so far), but keep a VERY close eye on the fuel lines, the electric connections and especially the six bolts that hold the housing in place. ... show more

  • Do. Not. Buy.
This little outboard motor seemed perfect for our little jonboat. And it would have been had it not had so many problems. Upon opening the box, we found oil all over the plastic the motor was in. Seems it leaked out of the motor during transit. No biggie. We put a little more oil in to replace the oil that leaked out. When we turned it on though, oil poured out of it. Then, we couldn't get it to turn off. The kill switch didn't work. After some looking, we found the kill switch wire had come apart at the coupling. Again, not outside of our realm of fixing-know-how. Took it fishing. Realized it has a gas leak. Also, the engine mounting pin lost its nut. And the engine tilting pin lost its nut. We almost lost the whole motor while going down the road! Which at this point, may not have been a horrible thing. We've decided to return it. We've only had it a couple of weeks and only took it out once. I'm afraid to know what would happen next. ... show more

  • Very Disappointing..
1. The motor was defective out of the box. Put it in water for the "breakout" and noticed right away that throttle was not working properly. I had to run it (very short time) feathering the choke just to keep the engine running. I first intended to just have the throttle worked on by a boat motor mechanic but determined no one works on these in my area and parts are not available. 2. When doing the initial installs of the items required, I noticed the air filter cover and filter was also not anywhere in the carton. 3. I realize the engine was built in China, but the instruction manual was in such broken English it made it almost impossible to understand the requirements. In addition I believe what pictures that were enclosed were not even the same motor I purchased ie. The kill switch shows located on the engine where this motor has it on the throttle handle. Lastly, very disappointed in this deal since research found good reviews for this motor. ... show more

  • Nice little motor
The media could not be loaded. Neat little motor. Out of the box it was completely built except for the air filter and cap. Once out had to tighten up and set the handle in position. Once i got that done i filled it with gas, set the choke and it started on the third pull. Not too bad for a knockoff. The things that give it a 4 star for me were: The manual is in broken english. It also was not quite the same engine shown as the one i got. The Amazon add said 4 stroke, checked the manual and it says 4 stroke in the back on the spec sheet (it was a different motor), but nowhere on the engine does it specify. The gas cap says add fuel and oil and they also included in the package a fuel mixing jug....So i was a little hesitant as to what it is. It does have an oil port so its definitely a 4 stroke, but for someone who doesnt know a thing about motors might not catch that and go by what the gas cap says and end up adding oil and ruining your motor. Its a little confusing. They gave me 2 tool kits in my package. Not sure if that was an accident or not. Its cheap and i didnt use them anyways. Another thing that seemed weird is i put the throttle in the lowest setting or idle and sometimes the propeller stops spinning and other times it seems to kind of jump into gear as if it doesnt fully engage. Im not sure how this thing was set up to either have an actual idle or be constantly engaged at all times. Either way the lowest setting the gearbox seems to have a mind of its own. This was just out of the box testing and i will update when i take it out and actually use it in the boat. Stay tuned! ... show more

  • If see review - DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought the motor based on fairly good reviews - and it was wrong! What a waste of $350. Problems: 1. After 3 trips the handle fells off (tighten all nuts/bolts very good when assembled), i had to drill hole where handle attached to secure the nut with a splinter) 2. After tightening all nut /bolts the oi is steel leaking 3. After about 10 trips, the throttle cord broke,. The company sent replacement - good!!!!! 4. Now the very bad - the cracking sound and the propeller stopped working, but I can still start the engine May be the engine is not that bad, i just got the bad one? and would like a replacement if it is possible. Otherwise I have to waste $350 and put in garbage ... show more
