This thing is inexpensive, small and made completely out of plastic, aside from the obvious parts that are metal. That's alright though, it keeps the price and weight down. So far it seems durable and the little ferro rod does throw sparks. This thing does get knives reasonably sharp with little effort. I was able to reprofile the edge with about 50 pulls at light pressure on each side of the it. So what do you do when you're out and about and you need to sharpen a blade? Use a Sharpal 6-In-1 Pocket Knife Sharpener & Survival Tool, of course. Pull-through sharpeners are designed for "quick 'n' dirty," on-the-go sharpening because that won't give you a refined edge. However, compared to a dull blade, the sharpening job that tools such as these provide is very helpful. The greatest drawback is that the sharpening "v" is a fixed angle, so it's more likely to be useful for smaller and thinner blades. Be sure to compare the sharpening angle before you're out in the woods. Carrying a tool that won't work is a waste of weight and space. That said, if the angle does work for you, this tool has some cool bonuses that add real value. These include a loud, high-pitched emergency whistle and a small Ferro rod (fire stick). The fire stick is an especially valuable addition, making this a good value - if the sharpener itself works for you! ... show more

I chose this sharpener for its versatility, compact size and reasonable price. I successfully used this product to sharpen two hand pruners and a larger loping shears with ease and great results. I took the first hand pruner apart, mostly to clean it well before sharpening, so it was easy to run the bIade through the sharpener. To my surprise, I was able to sharpen the second hand pruner easily without taking it apart; same with the big loppers. I had a much easier time pruning the azaleas and other shrubs in the yard this weekend. This product is compact, portable, easy to use, and does a fine job sharpening my tools. The media could not be loaded. I bought this hoping it would sharpen my knife it didn't sharpen it as well as I'd hope. On the other hand it worked great for my hatchet. It feels very durable and is easy to hold and easy to use. The flint and steel works great although hard to get out. The whistle is loud. Not to bad for the price. ... show more
