I have tried many makeup brushes throughout the years. Many of them on the more expensive side, and others on the cheeper side. I have only used this brush set on 3 occasions, and I'm already loving it. It blends well, and has a soft texture. Some brushes, normally leave a weird or strong odor, but this brush set is odorless and works great on sensitive skin. I was surprised by the quality of these brushes! They are soft but still carry product and blend well. I haven’t noticed any shedding or smell. The only thing I really dislike is the case. It is hard to get them out and bends the bristles back. I wish the top flap and front flap opened!

I was hesitant to buy because there weren't any reviews, but I bought them anyways, mainly because they are vegan made brushes with an organic touch of bamboo handles. I was like a child during Christmas when I opened the package... these brushes are beautiful. For the price you pay for these, I was expecting something much less. The brushes are so soft and hold just the perfect amount of make-up to apply smoothly and evenly. I use powder makeup and these work perfectly with the powder foundation. I will definitely recommend these to my friends and buy more Shany products now that I know they produce great quality cruelty-free products. To compare, I had my grandmothers shiseido brushes. It didn't come with an eyebrow brush or eye shadow brush, and the powder brush didn't hold enough of my powder foundation. Not to mention they were 5 times the price of these. ...Keep these awesome vegan products coming! :) ***UPDATE: Just wanted to say that I have now been using these brushes everyday for the past 6 months now and not one has started to shed. They are still as soft as they came and the bamboo is holding up perfectly as well. I use these for travel as well, since it comes with a perfect roll up pouch for them. Not sure what the fuss is about... The brushes are actually really nice quality. The size makes them perfect for travel or everyday use. Don't be freaked out by the word "synthetic" -- we all know what those cheap-quality "bristles" feel like (the ones that practically leave claw marks across your blushes and eyeshadows then feel about as smooth as a mustache as you rake them across your skin). These are NOT those. Instead, these are soft (but not too soft) and smooth "hairs" -- not bristles. I'll update my review if I learn otherwise but these brushes give every indication that for a mere mortal/normal makeup user they'll last a long, long time (i.e. there's no need to worry about mileage as if you're a professional makeup artist...). Here's the low down: A) the brushes don't smell, B) I would have NEVER had cause to sniff the case if I hadn't read the other reviews claiming its scent was horrifying but...if I had to describe it, it smells exactly like anything else you would order online that's new (think new shoes, for example). C) As for "airing out" the case to get rid of the smell, I'd actually recommend putting the case inside a ziplock bag filled with 2 cups of dry, uncooked rice for 4-6 hours before...I'M KIDDING. By the time I finished taking pictures for you guys, the case smelled exactly like a pair of new shoes that had sat out of the box for EXACTLY as long as the case had sat out of its box while I photographed it. D) Regarding the quality/durability of the case: do I think it'll be around for me to clutch lovingly as I lie on my deathbed? NO. But if that's your expectation, you've probably sniffed a few too many newly-unwrapped products... ... show more

I really wanted to love this set. The box that the brushes come in is attractive, compact and protects the brushes quite well. Someone said that the box crushes the tops of her brushes, but I think she didn't make sure the handles were in properly, this does not happen in mine at all. Brush by brush analysis: Blush: This is a lovely brush! It's soft and dense and works well for blushes and powders. With powders, you need to tap it off since it is a dense brush. In a pinch, I've even used this to buff in liquid foundation and it was great for that. Stipple: It's a good stippling brush. Also soft and dense. I like using this with cream blushes. The "foundation" brush: What? Why would you ever use such a tiny, pointy brush for foundations? I tried. It doesn't work. The only real use I've found for this is it's small enough to be a pretty good contouring brush, but it doesn't blend very well (it's so pointy that circular motions aren't very smooth). It's also too dense and thus stiff to work for under eye concealer. I don't often reach for this brush. The large and small shadow brushes and contour crease brush: Are so so stiff that it's uncomfortable to use. Add to the fact that the brush fibers are so smooth that they don't really pick up powder eyeshadow well. These are pretty much useless. Eyeliner brush: This is great! It works well for eyeliner, packing on shadow over eyeliner for a softer/smokier look and also for brows. The three eyeshadow brushes have been removed from my kit and replaced with ecotools travel brushes (which fit nicely in the box). There is also room in the box for a small foldable brow brush/lash comb. Overall, I would say to look for a different set, though I do continue to use mine (just not the eyeshadow brushes). ... show more
