  • A book for our time; for those who know there is a better way to live one's best life.
This book was clearly written with first hand knowledge and a deep understanding about what it takes to be a true leader. It isn't about speeches, rousing rhetoric, and grand promises, it is about one's daily choices. About how each of us can make a difference towards the betterment of the world, our place in it, and one's individual goals. I am not a big reader of self help books or PR related testimonials...this is not like that. It is a practical guide for living one's life to the fullest measure. By following the guidance MR. Stock provides in this book, one can easily set achievable goals, which might indeed bring material wealth, but true the goal is reaching the deeper riches in life; those that sustain a person inside. I have read his other books and found then a good read and interesting; I recommend them too. But this book should be on every business person's desk, worn out, marked up, dog eared, and treasured. An excellent gift for every graduate, or anyone arriving at that place in life where they feel the need, the craving, to lead a better life. To finally reach out and make it happen for themselves and to serve to lead. Indeed! ... show more

  • Go for it!
I have had the privilege of spending some meaningful time in person with Jim Strock and regularly study from Jim's latest book Serve to Lead - Your Transformational 21st Century Leadership System and dynamic web site ServetoLead.org. The following is a brief share of my experiences. Jim Strock is a master communicator and expert leader. We are most fortunate that Jim has chosen to write another book to share his expertise at leadership. However, please be certain, this transmission is about much more than leadership. Everyone who will study and implement this system of life skills can become an expert at leadership ... and living. "Who are you serving?" How comprehensive and potent! Strategically, "Who are you serving?" takes many questions often asked and places them all in one concise notice; right in front of you, easy to reach, always available. No ambiguity - each time this question is asked and answered, clarity of purpose presents itself. Why am I doing this? Is this the best thing to do? Who is important? Who is most important? Do I need this? Should I do this? What's most important? Is this important? What should I do now? What should I do next? Am I wasting time? All framed within "Who are you serving?" This book shares in extensive detail how and why to implement this powerful tool. So many powerful subjects are explored throughout every page of this book. Just a very few favorites include: * "... learning how to learn is more powerful than ever." * "... the transparency of the Information Age." * "... the absence of - or even a brief lapse in - disciplined communication can have dire consequences." * "Is it time to recalibrate your priorities?" * "Are you getting better every day?" As President of Pacific Environmental Management, Inc., the entire chapters of Serving Your Customers, Effective Communication, plus Sales and Other Persuasive Communications are extremely valuable. Outstanding! ... show more

  • Thoughtful Perspective
I chose this rating because this read was very similar in style from another book that I read titled, "The Burden of Command" by John B. Edwards. I suggest you read that one as they both encourage a major shift in your attitude towards leadership. It's also very telling of everything that's wrong with our more prominent leaders. Very good, I plan on utilizing that one question that resonates, "Who Are You Serving?" ... show more

  • A great vision of leadership
New challenges in politics, culture, and business call for new brands of leadership. With Serve to Lead, leadership authority James Strock offers a crisp overview of the tactics that define 21st century leadership across contexts—from major companies to political campaigns, from leading your employees to leading an entire nation. A book like this couldn’t come at a better time: as Strock shows in Serve to Lead, 20th-cenutry leadership styles were “centralized” and “authoritarian,” while good leaders today see the “value in people” and regard their followers not as subordinates, but as “team members.” This is only the beginning of Strock’s vision of leadership as a means of serving others and winning their loyalty, and as a medium of refined communication. The value of Serve to Lead is apparent at first glance: thought questions and quotations from proven leaders are dispersed throughout Strock’s commentary, and can offer reflection and enlightenment even in the midst of a hectic schedule. Yet the rewards of really settling into Strock’s book and approach are many. His individual case studies in good leadership draw on everything from the traditions of the U.S. Military, to the successes of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, to the “customer-centric” business model favored by Best Buy. The lesson, throughout, is to treat leadership as a mode of dialogue and outreach. The seven-week program that concludes this book, “Make Your Life a Masterpiece of Service”, shows you how to do just that, whether you are an educator, an entrepreneur, or an inspiring author like James Strock. ... show more

  • This is an amazing book
Servant Leadership is the right method for leaders to lead. This book is full of information, guidance, inspiration, quotable quotes, and a concrete action plan for how to become the effective leader you always wanted to. Mr. James Strock accomplishes this using the servant leadership model. I am such a fan of this book, that I keep posting quotes from it on LinkedIn! Please see the picture of my copy of this book. I read it so much that it is dog-eared. It is the first book that I felt compelled to use a highlighter as I read it! I am a huge fan of this book (did I say that before). I see how it has affected my leadership and day - to - day interactions so positively, that there is no way but to be a fan! Read the book, and be amazed with the results as well... ... show more
