This bilge pump is defective by design. I have owned this pump for all of a week and it functioned as intended. However, in a remarkable set of unintended, but not unique circumstances the pump became inoperative. I left the pump out in direct sunlight on an 80 degree day, with the handle fully extended, propped on the side of a kayak. In the course of an hour or two the heat of the sunlight heated the plastic pump shaft just enough for the pump shaft plastic to soften and bend 30 degrees, making the pump completely nonfunctional. Fortunately this happened while on land, but after this I cannot possibly imagine trusting this pump to meet any acceptable standards of readiness and fitness for purpose based on my experience. A bilge pump is a necessary part of safety gear, and if you cant leave it out in the sun without failing, it does not deserve to be relied upon. I will post photos when I get a chance. ... show more

    • Make a simple modification, and this this will last fr years.
The rubber flange assembly inside the pump let go while we were removing water from a kayak. We had a back-up bilge pump, but this failure was not anticipated and the failure cost us time. I pulled the head piece off. It only takes one screw to do so. The rubber flange assembly is held onto the shaft, from the factory, with only friction. I put a SS screw through the flange assembly and the shaft, and now all is working perfectly again. ... show more

    • Do not buy if intending to be anywhere hot
Bought this a couple years ago. Never needed to use it. Just took it out with my kayak to get things ready for the season and decided to give it a try to make sure it still worked. Can't pull the handle out from it anymore. It acts like it's stuck and will come out about an inch if forced and won't go further. Last year, I left my kayak, this pump, and all my other gear in my car since I was going out so often. After looking at another post on here, it must have overheated in the car, caused the plastic to melt just enough to the point of making it unusable. It worked fine before it was out in the heat, but I don't see this as a quality product if cannot withstand higher temperatures, especially considering the main season for its use. ... show more

    • Worked like a charm..
I am always amazed when this thing pumps water out of my little jon boat like a champ. I have used it several times already -- every time it rains and the wind blows the cover off the boat. I wish that the out-spout was just a little bit higher, but when I use it right next to the edge of the boat almost all the water hits the lake. So happy to have it! I can't speak to durability. UPDATE 8/15/20: Grabbed the pump out of the boat so that I could pump out the accumulated water but the tube refuses to slide inside the pump. Did the plastic melt and bend in the hot sun? Perhaps. It's been sweltering out for weeks. I guess I'll read up and see if I can come up with a solution. But man, I'm bummed. Thought I'd bought a reliable pump. ... show more

    • A kayaking day saver
So as a started-kayaking-because-of-covid-social-distancing newbie, going on the second summer with this, and IMO don't leave home without it. When my 2 layer inflatable started to pool with water from some invisible hole, it might have been embarrassing, but every now and again I would just pump out with this. Wasn't in danger of sinking, but paddling with a gallon or more of extra water isn't fun. This spews out water just fine, is lightweight. I put a lanyard on and wouldn't kayak without. Plus, even if you don't get a leak, you can use to remove excess water onshore. I like the bright easy to see color too. ... show more

    • This thing pumps a ton of water!
I've only had to use this once, and it was by chance rather than in my Kayak!? I had it still in the van when I took the Jon Boat into the water and well, kind of forgot the drain plug was out. When I realized this I could only get about 2/3 of the thing out of the water before it was to heavy and scrapping the cement. I grabbed this, and a couple minutes later the boat was drained and floating again. Makes a good impromptu water canon as well, it shoots the water out around 6 feet or more if you want to surprised your Kayak friends... Or Kayak enemies ;-) ... show more

    • Stopped working after second use.
After buying a 17' kayak this year I decided to bring along this bilge pump to the larger lake. I had bought it for a smaller kayak but never really used it. My kayak had some water coming in a turn and I used the pump it worked fine the first time, the second time the pull handle came loose from the washer/plunger rubber thing and stopped pumping water out. I tried to disassemble to reassemble but parts appeared to be glued onto the shaft. It may work once, but it isn't sturdy enough for a second use in my experience. ... show more

Easy to use and simple to place. If you have lines on your kayak, then it can simply be put behind you in an easy to grab location. Be sure it's under two lines (see photo) so when you go over and have a wet-exit, there is no question whether or not you'll be able to pump out. Now, whether you can get back in from a wet-exit is a totally different story, but once you get back in, at least you can pump out and get moving again. A+ in my books. Great emergency tool that you shouldn't over look. ... show more
