I use these for my kids art classes. They are not as pictured. They come in a large box with individual colors grouped together. The colors are not in separate trays which are ready to use. This is a misrepresentation by the seller. The bottom row always has broken pastels which have spilled out in every box I've received. The top rows of colors have always been in good shape. I've purchased a few of these boxes. The pastels are easy to use and great quality for beginners. They are not good enough for serious artists. ... show more

October 15, 2023 The product I received ARE the colors as seen in this Amazon seller page photo, from Sargent Art Store. I received 288 pieces, double of 24 colors, 6 each on 12 pallets (two colors per pallet). The image in the advertisement is brighter than what is actually produced (even my photos have that effect), but these are great for student and semiprofessionals. Bulk colors are hard to find. This is an extraordinary deal! I add images of the exact size of the pieces against a measuring tape for both width and length, and a comparison against a regular piece of art chalk. Very hard to understand what is being purchased with some products but this is a generous size for the price. Some of the negative reviews are not for this exact product, but are actually for the 144 piece set which is sold on a completely different page, with its own review section. That item costs $9.00 more for half as much chalk. Why would anyone sell the same item DOUBLED for nearly ten bucks less? What are the exact colors being sold by Sargent and why are they not clearly listed and fullfilled? Is possible some reviews are purchases from "other sellers"? I will update further after evaluating with use. ... show more

    • Very easily broken
This chalk broke very easily. In fact, some was broken when I opened it.it was not a good fit for my art camp kids ages 8-12

    • Good quality and an excellent price for an art teacher on a budget
I was unsure of what to expect after reading some of the reviews. What I got was 24 packages of 12 different colors. I haven't opened all of the packages but the ones I did open were not broken. The colors were vivid and when I tested them were good for what I wanted to use them for (elementary art classes). There are no pinks or purples which isn't great, but I just mitigated that by ordering an extra larger set that did have them, and I will plan on breaking up the pinks and purples to share. For the price, these are a great buy. The item number of the Sargent item that I received was #22-4112. If you look this up on Blick.com, these retail there for $7.20 per set. Here, you can get 24 sets for $40 which works out to around $1.67/set. I think the cover is different but what is inside is the same. For classroom use I think that these would be a great buy! ... show more

I wrote a while review and then erased it, so here I go again.. I've been buying these 144 Sargeant chalk boxes for years. It's a great work horse chalk. They are hard enough to do detail work, and the bright colours are always rich and really pop.. what I got the other day, was NONE OF THESE THINGS!! this chalk is very soft and meely like Alphacolr chalk, and just crumbles. The colurs are so washed out, they look they they were left in the sun for a month, I thought I'd opened a bix of landscape colours at first. And if you look to the beoken green chalk in my photo the outside and inside colurs are different. Which Sargeant has always been a true colour on the ouside/inside. The 'old' sets had three beautiful greens, like a bright granny smith green, kelly and spruce greens. Now its like an avacado sort of green, a faded blah green, and one that is even a stretch to call it green. it's more of a pond scum brownish grey. In the photo the red and purple are removed as I had to deliver them to someone in an art festival, but the reds are just as disappointing as the greens. They used to have gorgeous scarlet and almost crimson reds, and they really popped. Now you can bately tell the difference between the orange and reds. I actually bypassed the reds when unpacking because I thought they WERE the orange ones. And to add to it, there are alrwady 4 sets of oranges, so the reds are barely different, whicj is just ridiculous. Overall I would have returned this box if I hadn't desperately needed the red/purple (i bought two and I am returning the unopened one) Also when comparing the chalk to one from an old box its more than evident that its almost half the weight of the old ones, and I think this cheaper construction led to a much higher mumber of pieces of chalk breaking in transit. (I've bought these boxs for years and they have always faired well in transit, with maybe one or two pieces breaking at most, with this box having at least 20 broken pieces. I am disappointed that the company has changed their process and/or formula to now produce this lack lustre box of crappy chalk. I would like to say that this was maybe just a one off or fraudulent seller, but I ordered several other Sargeant sets in different set sizes and from different sellers and they too were this washed out, landacape lookong set, not the bright primary colours of the past, or even in the 'item display photo'. if this is what is to be expected from Sergeant from now on, I wont bother ordering from them anymore. Great color range and came packaged nice and tight so they weren’t rattling around. I counted maybe 3 broken out of all 288. I’d say that’s pretty good. Each tray has a foam piece between it. Yes you have to sort them out, but that’s not a big deal! Definitely worth it. :)
