  • Great tuner
Style: Tuner
I live in a fringe area, stations that I want to listen to are at least 90 miles away in mountainous terrain. This tuner replaced an OLD Carver TX-1 tuner. The difference is night and day. I went from static and dropping stereo signal to near studio quality sound. What a difference. This tuner also outputs a higher level of audio to the preamp. Went from 40% volume to 20% volume for the same sound level with more bass and no static. HD lock-on sub channels at over 90 miles. This is in my detached shop building, almost didn't want to quit for the day the music was so good. This rates as one of my best purchases this year. ... show more

  • Amazing sounding radio, no real other choice for a FM tuner.
Style: Tuner
Not a lot of other FM tuners being sold, and I think this is the only one with HD. I put a good antenna on it, and put that right in the window, it went from hardly receiving to lots of channels. I can get FM stations on my computer, my wife nagged me this is not needed, but I like having a radio, and scanning without Internet. It is light, mostly an empty box, runs cool, uses very low power, and looks nice. Make sure to use the digital output to a nice amp that takes digital input, it makes a big difference. The sound is cleaner than any expensive analog FM tuner, when pulling in HD, as it should. ... show more

  • Good product
Style: Tuner
The first one I bought had a broken display that did not light but was able to exchange radio and quickly for an LKQ unit. Well built, improved both my reception and sound quality. Love the extra HD channels and makes the listening experience that much better. Also, improved the non HD channels. I am thinking of the HDR-18 table top clock radio for my bedroom as a result of this success. ... show more

  • THE Best Quality Component Tuner I’ve ever owned!
Style: Tuner
This is my Second HDT HD Sangean tuner I own, still have the HDT-1 but wanted a digital out to mate with my new RME ADI-2 Dac. My HDT 1 lasted over 15 years and was still working perfectly so the question of are these made to last I would say Yes. I never had a problem with the 1 and so I took the plunge last September on the 2. Wow guys, Sangean outdid themselves. The Kit Looks FANTASTIC. Really looks very well built. So now here’s my reply to some of the reviews on Amazon I’ve read. Too complicated to use. Well yes and No. Sangean put a schiit load of features, buttons, menus for us folks who like to “Play” with our gear. But, you DON’T have to use it that way. I’ve got mine set up like my old HDT 1. Have 10 presets lined up, just like the old days, Tune in a station, hold down a preset button for a second and it’s set! To “recall”, a preset, you have to hit the “Preset” button and then the preset you want to go to. No big deal. Thee other thing is the button layout, most of the button’s have a “Dual” purpose, IF YOU WANT TO GET CRAZY. I just us it like a regular tuner and there is nothing complicated about it. But….if you want to Tweak away, you’ll have plenty to play with. Now, the sound, again, wit a Top Tier dipole inside antenna, reception in the Seattle area is great. Tons of college stations, underground stations and “Sub Channel stations (HD 2 and up) with lots of the sub stations streaming internet radio stations. The sound Quality is Fantastic. Digital output coax into my DAC is 48 KHz and a 24 Bit Depth! Read that again……… No digital “burps, clicks, farts, stutters, shadows, nothing but CLEAN reception and truly High Fidelity music. The digital display is easy to see from 10 feet away and at full brightness it is fine, I have no complaints about the display at all. Again, my log HDT 1 lasted 15+ years and is still perfectly functional, so I think that should say something about the reliability of these tuners. And last but not least, th AM section is surprisingly good, compared to so many tuners old and new that sound like crap on the AM band, Sangean should be commended on not overlooking this band because I do listen to AM radio a lot. I keep my tuner in 24/7 by the way, including my old HDT 1, 24/7. Not lying here, the jazz station I listen to keeps the Cats mellow at night. Hope that helps, I’m really digging it, and all the cool HD Sub channels around here really making my experience worthwhile. Gerard Masters ... show more

  • Much more radio channels. Poor instructions about hooking up to home theater receiver.
Style: Tuner
Very nice unit. More radio channels then what my Marantz sr5015 receiver could do. Audio is cleaner and dynamic. Well worth the money. Note instructions are not the best most is how to use the unit but not plugging into a receiver and what not. If you have a theater receiver you need to need a red and white RCA connection to both the unit and the receiver. ... show more

  • Pretty Good, Not Great
Style: Tuner
There are very few choices for a standalone HD (Hybrid Digital) FM tuner, so this seemed like a reasonable choice. I live within a 20-30 mile radius of quite a number of FM stations and there are about a dozen using HD. I use an external FM antenna connected to the receiver. In my experience, reception of standard stereo stations is marginal and the receiver refuses to provide stereo reception except on the strongest stations. My Sony receiver has no problem maintaining stereo reception on those same stations HD reception is OK, but not all stations can lock in on HD mode. My vehicle FM receiver has no problem capturing and locking on to all known HD stations in my area. My main reason for buying the receiver was to simplify use for my wife who prefers to push a button and hear music. I use streaming for just about everything and don't miss the commercials broadcast on FM. By the way, the Wiim Mini is a fantastic streamer and integrates nicely with Amazon Alexa. I also connected my outdoor broadcast band antenna to see how the receiver did with AM HD. There are only a few locally and the HD reception was fine. With the included loop antenna, AM reception was poor and HD not at all. The programming content isn't worth listening to, so I really have no need for it. ... show more
