  • One of my favorite movies.
I admit that Statham is one of my favorite actors, although the girl playing Mei was fantastic. Great story. I write fiction myself so to me, story is everything. This is in my top 10.

  • My favorite movie by Statham. His best acting.
Jason Statham is known for his tremendous physically charged action movies and I don't think he ever made a movie that I didn't like. But, for some reason, this particular movie is my favorite I think. His interaction with Young Catherine Chan as Mei was some of his best acting. In most of his films, he's the cool headed, emotionless, lethal powerhouse. His explosive martial arts prowess is pretty dampened impressive. You just can't choreograph talent like he displays. Oh, I'm sure the action segments and fight scenes were indeed choreographed, but you can't just 'teach' that kind of skills 'on the set' ..no...Mr. Statham is a genuine, highly trained individual whom has obviously devoted an amazing amount of effort and determination to his discipline to be that bad @$$. We've established that. But the way he portrayed being 'saved' from a shattered life, a murdered wife, and the razors edge of suicide because the hopeless little Mei needs him; gives him a purpose to not give in to despair but get up and fight, and fight HARD for her is just ...well...great! Here's a quick summary: Stathan's character is an ex police officer that has been betrayed by a corrupt department. They hang him out to dry, letting all the criminals (especially the Russian mafia he'd gone afoul of) tear his life to peices...They let him live. But it's no life. Anyone he talks to, will die. Anyone he gets close to, they'll die. He is not even allowed to live anywhere or it will be destroyed. ..Mei, a small child that has an amazing photographic mind. ANY number, ANY, no matter how long or complex, she can remember it ...perfectly. Flawlessly. The Chinese Mafia use her as a human numbers book. All operations, all payments, all COMBINATIONS, are stored on the wet ware that is her brain. No paper trail. No computers to hack. There's just Mei and her mind. When the information in her head becomes too valuable to let her continue to live less she be compromised and forced to reveal immeasurable wealth and power, she has to flee certain death from her former "fathers" --vicious gangsters that would blow her brains out in an instant-- knowing this horrible truth about her situation, she makes a run for it...And she runs smack into Statham just before he makes that fatal 'last step' of his life.... Their eyes meet. The connection made. Both desperate, Both about to die...thinking he's going to die anyway, he wonders, can he do one last meaningful thing before he goes? Freaking awesome! • Missed half the movie
I give the close captioning and/or translation of the movie an F. I don't understand what happened because all i got with translations were, [Speaking Russian] or [Speaking Mandarin] which, in this movie, was quite a bit of non English dialog. I usually dont have this issue on this platform, but for reasons i have no control over, I couldnt get the English translations for me to enjoy this movie at its fullest. I watched the whole thing and was enjoying it but with the frustration of not knowing WTF was being discussed in Mandarin or Russian, I was perplexed to the meaning of the plot. Anyways, I give the movie, for what i could make out, a 4 star but the platform for not translating important language information i give zero stars. If you watch this and dont get any translations, stop watching and look for another platform that translate these languages in the movie, because its a lot of missed dialog. ... show more

  • Jason Statham At His Best!
I'm going to borrow from a Five Star review of Michael Cast's. "Thinking he's going to die anyway, he decides to do one last meaningful thing before his life ends." That's the plot of this fantastic movie. It also briefly shows the underside of homelessness in New York. Seeing a homeless man murdered for a pair of boots in the shelter brought me back to The Saint of Fort Washington. I was surprised that Statham and the guy who was slain did not put the boots inside the legs of the cot which would have made them all but impossible to steal. Statham sees a young girl named Mei pursued by tough guys from the Russian mob and decides to intervene. He does and kills and maims all those who seek the girl. But with the Chinese Triads also seek the girl as well as the crooked NYPD. All that stands between her and certain death is the Jason Statham. This was a great movie. Statham's best acting to date. The film was written very well and actually has much more plot than it really needs. For instance, the guy Statham dispatches in the end was not needed at all. Mei could have been retrieved another way. To me it was an unnecessary character that overburdened the film. But that's my quibble. The end of the film sets things ripe for a sequel. The Russians? The Triads? What about the crooked mayor of New York and his perfidious cronies? Let's pray they have a sequel with Mei grown up or a teenager. She's incredible! A super genius and when she grows up would no doubt become a millionaire with her great talents. Unfortunately this film did not do well in the box office. Indeed, I don't even remember it being in the theatres. It came and went so fast as to not even leave a trace of its passing. Nevertheless, as Michael Cast said: This is a great film. I'm the 1546th person to review the film and I give it Five Stars. A. Nathaniel Wallace, Jr. ... show more
