Description

From Rolling Stone, the definitive and beautiful companion book to one of the most popular and hotly debated lists in the music world. In partnership with Abrams, Rolling Stone has created an oversize companion book to celebrate the updated 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, telling the stories behind every album through incredible Rolling Stone photography, original album art, the magazine’s unique critical commentary, breakout pieces on the making of key albums, and archival interviews. This anthology is based on Rolling Stone’s 2020 reboot of the original 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, launched in 2003 and last updated in 2012, polling the industry’s most celebrated artists, producers, executives, and journalists to create the ranking. The voters include both classic and contemporary artists, including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish; rising artists like H.E.R., Tierra Whack, and Lindsey Jordan of Snail Mail; as well as veteran musicians such as Adam Clayton and the Edge of U2, Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, Gene Simmons, and Stevie Nicks. The book is boldly designed, includes hundreds of color images, and is packed with surprises and insights for music fans of all ages. Read more

This book came in good condition and I enjoyed reading the info about each album. This is a great coffee table book or a gift for any music lover.

  • As expected.
After more than fifty years of melomania I have a respectable music collection. About half is Pop. Of that, I could list 500 best albums, even restricting the list to only one per band. The editors could have done that, with honorable mentions like they did on Aja, or then do a "500 all time Greatest Performers" and list their best work, but I don't think they can go that far, that deep. Millennials... Out of my Pop collection, more than half is listed in the book, kind of a gratifying validation, with unexpected surprises like Shakira and Television...but so many unforgivable omissions (like no Soda Stereo !) that the editor's deficient musical education is evident. El sur también existe, nenes! And I'll never foget that Rolling Stone said Led Zeppelin was no good...but then this kid was already into Blues, Jazz and at ten years old bought his first album: " Blood Sweat and Tears 2 " and his dad loved it, granting him unrestricted access to his fine eclectic music collection and state-of-the-art turntable, a 1968 Panasonic ( No, not Technics yet) SL1100 serial# 00098, intended only for radio station testing, but the Man had connections. Howboutemapples...huh ? The book has beautiful photography and good enough writing, a nice coffee table thing, no more . "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" is much better on the musical and historical levels than this lukewarm production. At least, get them both, one for decoration and one for you if you are really into music. ... show more

  • In a word: meh...
Never particularly cared for this magazine, their opinions, or the opinions of their readers. That I borrowed this book from an elibrary was out of curiosity only, and free. The only good news was that most of the now classic albums by the best band of all time took several spots on the list with their historic, industry-changing sounds and songs. Without them leading the way in the first place, many or most of the others represented here wouldn't have gotten out of the garage and garden party circuit. Yes I said it. You figure it out. ... show more
