  • Suitable for one's first foray into guitar
Color: Natural Size: Full
The media could not be loaded. The RockJam Acoustic Guitar - (RJW-101-N-PK) As a guitar player, my philosophy regarding instruments is generally that one should invest as much as one can comfortably on a chosen instrument, because quality craftsmanship is paramount. But what if you don't really know if you want to play guitar? Or if you will stick with it for the years it takes to get familiar enough to really experience the joys of playing? What if you're 7 years old, and this might be your introduction to the instrument? There is a stark difference between instruments that are meant to be played, and instruments that are really meant as toys. This guitar blurs that line, and from my perspective, not in a way that makes a lot of sense. Build Quality: The RJW-101-N-PK looks at first glance to be a glossy maple or pine top guitar. All other surfaces are covered in a glossy black veneer, or shellac of sorts. The guitar itself is very light, which points to the majority of the guitar being a lower grade of wood, which makes sense for an introductory or toy guitar. Where the quality is really lacking, is in the small details, most notably in the inlay dots. They seem to have been pressed in by machine rather than hand, as the surrounding wood has been splintered in such a way as to suggest immense force rather than finesse. The wood is splintered enough to cause me some concern when sliding over those frets. The top of the guitar looks good, although mine has a few spots where the clear coat is worn through to the bare wood. The neck attachment is a little sloppy, excess glue is visible. The guitar I received suffered initially from a fatal flaw in the string spacing. Specifically, the low E string sat on the bridge piece awkwardly close to the A string, which made playing chords which involved those strings quite impossible. I was able to relax the tension in the E string, and file a new groove for it to sit in, in the bridge piece. This was simple enough to do, but this would have been easily noticed with even the most cursory quality control measures. The action is set very high, (about 5mm at the 12th fret). This is a more suitable height for nylon stringed classical guitars, but for a steel string guitar, this makes playing for extended periods a fairly arduous endeavor. Lots of fret buzz from very minor flaws in your fretting hand technique, which is a turn off for beginners. This guitar resists your playing of it, whereas a good quality guitar facilitates your playing of it. The fretboard of this guitar seems to be built differently than I have ever seen. I can only speculate, but I think the fretboard itself was inlaid into the actual neck. Usually, the fretboard is a different wood applied as a toplayer, and the frets are installed into this piece. On the RockJam guitar, it looks like the neckwood was hollowed out and a new piece was laid in, and then the frets applied to it. This gives it a look like the neck was banded, which is seen on much higher costing guitars, but the process is completely different. This must have been a cost saving measure. The fretwork is pretty good. None of them stick out, and they are properly filed to a bevel so you can slide your hands, and you won't get caught on any of them, which can happen with low quality instruments. Sound: I am actually quite impressed with the sound of this guitar. It is admittedly a little “bright” meaning it produces a guitar sound that is a little more on the treble side, rather than the bass side of the spectrum. It isn’t tinny by any means, but it does seem like the wood is pine, or some other wood that doesn’t have the natural warmness of some more popular but exotic guitar woods, like maple, ash, or mahogany. This fits with cost cutting measures in production, but in the case of this particular model, the sound is actually much better than I expected from a visual inspection of the build quality. It has the sound of a much more expensive guitar, this much is true, but it is a pity because the sound is perhaps eclipsed by the fact that playability was sacrificed. Please refer to the video to judge the tone for yourself, and also notice the difficulty of cleanly transitioning chords. Playability: This guitar is difficult to play cleanly. As mentioned before, it is as if this guitar would prefer you not play it. You feel as if you are wrestling the sound out of this guitar, rather than releasing it. The shellac on the back of the neck does not lend itself to quick transitions, and it can become almost sticky. It does have a good hand-feel though, and the shape of the neck in cross-section is what I would call average, meaning that it isn’t too fat in the hand, so that you can’t get your hands around it, but it isn’t too thin, it is in the sweet spot, which is good for a beginner. Accessories: The guitar comes with a bag, which is just barely there. It is only to protect against dust, as it is about as thick as a nylon windbreaker jacket. I wouldn’t expect the bag itself to survive many trips out of the house. The tuner included is actually very good. It clamps on the guitar and uses vibration to tell you how close you are to your intended note on each string. This is very important especially for beginners, as you can start to develop your sense of the guitar when it is in tune, and recognize when it is going out of tune. The included stand is good, if a little minimal. It does hold the guitar upright, but it isn’t the most secure. Usually stands are extra, so it is a good touch this is included. Conclusion: Who should buy this guitar, and for whom? From my perspective, this guitar doesn’t make too much sense to me, because it somehow sounds great, but is tough to play. Those two things seldom come in the same package. It has construction that would make the case that it is a toy guitar. On the other hand, it has a really good tone when you can manage it. If you need to save money, or if you’re not sure if the person you buy this for will keep playing, the price range looks attractive. However, the playability of this guitar I can almost guarantee will dissuade any but the most determined of younger players. This would make the most sense as a guitar in a public school music room. TLDR: OVERALL GRADE: C PROS: + Looks good + Sounds better than expected, on the bright side tone-wise + Included tuner is great + Stand is a nice touch CONS: - Playability could be better, is difficult to play - Build quality is mediocre, has minor flaws ... show more

  • Impressive beginner instrument for under $100
Color: Natural Size: Full
I'm a brass expert, not a guitar expert, though I have taken some guitar classes and have been around instruments my whole life so I do know a little bit about string instruments. I've tested quite a few under $100 guitars and other instruments from china. They're usually absolute rubbish, almost unplayable. Super cheap strings that don't stay in tune (sometimes nylon), super cheap tuning pegs (again, sometimes nylon), cheap finish, bad sound, etc. This RockJam guitar is a good value for under $100. That is not to say this is a high end or even nice guitar. But this is a great value for a beginner, a casual learner like myself, or as a practice/second instrument (so you don't have to worry about damage during transit, on the bus, etc). All the components on it are going to be your barebones components, but it is a legitimate instrument. It comes with real strings that do stay in tune (keep in mind, all new strings stretch out a bit at first). The pegs are real, easy to adjust, stay in place. The finish is very attractive. And the sound is rich, pretty impressive. It comes with a stand which is a nice perk, and picks. The nylon carry case really isn't great, no padding at all, and the carry strap is placed poorly, cumbersome. It comes with a clip-on tuning device, also a nice touch, though I prefer apps on my phone, because it gives you more information and also have metronomes and things like that. I will say that mine came with several blemishes in the wood and finish. Overall though I still think it's a good buy at $79. And they include some free online lessons. ... show more

  • The guitar to get a kid who MIGHT want to learn, or might quit
Color: Natural Size: Full
This is just OK quality. There are 2 main things to know: 1 - this ships in a box that makes it very obvious what is inside - both by shape and printed words. I got it for my child who wants to learn and she knew exactly what it was when she saw it on the porch before I noticed the delivery... surprise spoiled. I believe if you tell Amazon that it's a gift, they have to ship it in a separate box so that the gift receipt can be added in. 2 - It's really just ok quality. The price point probably should clue you in. It DOES work fine, it is NOT a toy. It is a real guitar. It's the perfect instrument to get a child who may or may not stick with learning guitar. If your kid says they want to learn from youtube, and wants a guitar for Christmas, this might be a good fit. But if they actually stick with it, and learn well after a a year, you're going to want to get him/her something a little better. ... show more

  • Nice Kit - Has some quality issues
Color: Natural Size: Full
The media could not be loaded. RockJam Acoustic Guitar Superkit Includes Stand, Gig Bag, Tuner, Picks, Plectrum Holder, Spare Strings & Online Lessons 6 String Pack, Right, Natural, Full (RJW-101-N-PK) This Acoustic Guitar Superkit falls short of meeting expectations. It's a great kit in theory, having several items in one bundle that would be perfect for a beginner. The gig bag arrived misaligned, and with busted stitching, exposing the inside (pic attached). The bag also lacks any kind of padding or protection for the guitar. The guitar itself is a glossy finish, but has several areas with dings, spots, off coloration, and in a bunch of places there's excess glue residue left behind from the manufacturing process. This can be seen in the video I posted. Tuning the guitar was pretty easy, and the sound quality is ok. The Superkit fails to meet my expectations. If I had purchased this, I would have returned it for a refund. However, it may be suited for a child just starting out with learning guitar as a hobby. ... show more
