  • Great little bookends with character and very detailed. A bit costly though.
Edition: Sakura Densya
Bought this as a second gift for my wife. As it reminds us of our time in Kyoto, Japan. The whole train scene is just really cool. The actual assembly went ok, some very small pieces were a bit difficult to put together. I would say that they really need to rethink the sequence of putting things together. I had difficulty with a certain section that involved gluing the gray cardboard, which is supposed to look like corrugated metal sheets. I had crushed the cardboard while gluing it on the wooden roof part. According to the instructions, you were supposed to glue the cardboard on the wooden roof before attaching it to the building. But when you try to attach the finished roof, it doesn’t always fit into place without some pressure. So I feel that you should glue the cardboard on the wooden roof with it already assembled in place. There were a couple of other instances where if you follow the instruction sequence, that you it is actually very difficult to assemble. But all in all this one is great and fun to do. It does not have any painting, just gluing little pieces of paper and things like that. The other designs are a bit more difficult as they involve painting multiple layers of paint in order to complete the bookend. So this one is a bit easier to complete and assemble. Have fun and take your time if you are going to do it. I was under a time crunch and didn’t want my wife to see what I was assembling. Best part is that they all light up and have such a nice look when done. ... show more

  • Engaging and fun activity
Edition: Sunshine Town
I thoroughly enjoyed putting this together. This was my first model kit and while it wasn't challenging it certainly was detailed. I didn't realize there was painting so I think if someone did not paint or sand edges thoroughly then maybe they could do it in 6 hours... I did it in 18! Frustratingly the top light failed to illuminate at the final build but it was illuminating along the way. At least the other two work right now. As a note, the lights won't work until the induction sensor is activated in addition to working batteries. I checked mine when it stated to check but the induction wasn't reliable at that stage. For some reason at the end it was more reliable but two pieces of wood between fingers and the induction pad is a little thick. I was missing one of the I pieces but I assumed I could scrap the work out myself later. Thankfully it was small enough I could. However, check where the piece is needed if you're missing anything because it could be vital. Overall, the instructions were clear and correctly ordered. It is overwhelming at first to digest and it certainly can use a better translation. Sometimes I would reverse when pieces are put together because it was honestly easier to add them another way but typically their ordering made the most sense. My big word of caution is to pre-attach pieces to ensure they fit into their holes without problem especially if that piece will have many pieces later when it is actually attached. Love the quality of the product and overall end result! Gifted this to my parents. Both the glue and paint included were more than sufficient (and quick drying!) for this kit! ... show more

  • very rewarding to assemble all pieces
Edition: Sunshine Town
I like it a lot. Assembly does take a lot of time and patience, ~6 hours for me; as an experimental physicist, I handle delicate equipment on a regular basis; I take pride in assembling fine pieces of stuff for a fine outcome. The craft is well designed, and the final product is very rewarding. It is a showpiece which you can place between books on shelves, but please do not expect it single handedly support books leaning on it from one side. The only complaint I have is about the touch switch to turn on the LED lights. It is over sensitive, and sometimes turns on the unit on its own. ... show more

  • This would have been a five except for lighting issues
Edition: Time Travel
I loved the train. If it had just been the train, I would have rated it a 5 star. The train was challenging to build, but looked amazing when it was done. The problem was with the box. While the lights were well identified at the beginning of the booklet, the second (or back light) lights wire was on the short side. It just reached but just barely. It was very tight to work with. Second, before starting the lighting I checked to make sure the lights worked before installing. After installing, them, they only worked intermittently. So I redid the lights, but it didn't fix the problem. Finally, the lights stopped working Altogether. The box itself was easy to put together and well marked and the train, like I said earlier, is amazing. ... show more

  • Such a fun set!
Edition: Sakura Densya
Got this as a gift for my husband who loves trains and it fits into our bookshelf aesthetic. It is definitely possible to build alone - but a lot of fun as a couple's activity. I would find the pieces and my husband would assemble and then we would switch off every few pages. It took us about 6 hours total to build and it looks great! Love all of the details and the craftsmanship! I would recommend being extremely careful when removing the pieces - we did break a few pieces that have skinnier parts and had to frankenstein them back together. We also used a small detail paintbrush to help with glue so we didn't get glue all over our fingers and onto all the other wood pieces. Definitely take your time and it will come out looking amazing! ... show more

  • Loved this activity and finished product
Edition: Sakura Densya
My gosh did this turn out cute! I don't know if I'm just slow but 6 hours assembly time was way off! I did this while on vacation with lots of free time and it took 5 days.. well, let's see and hour and a half a day maybe it was close. A couple of problem pieces- the flowers just have semi-outlines on some of the tree branches (ended up just guessing), missed the bottom front of tram and could only fit half of it on after tram was in place-the step to get on the tram needed to be further back, front box broke off (don't know what it was anyway), watch out for that front display window-I glued the display in place before putting on the window so no plastic window, finally love the lights and they WILL turn on if you put the on/off switch in the correct orientation behind that printed "picture" of a switch. I highly recommend this activity and I think its cute enough to gift. ... show more
