Top Amazon Reviews

  • Functions, poor collection, ugly filtering
Size: Dual Controllers
This is a very subpar NES Classic knockoff. I'll start with the good: the performance is pretty solid and the controls are pretty good. The included d-pads aren't on par with a real NES controller but they're shockingly close, the D-pad and action buttons are great, the start and select buttons are pretty poor and stick. Then on to the bad! The library included here is a generic bootleg 620in1 rom that has a smattering of US, European, Japanese and Chinese games along with a lot of bad bootleg homebrew games. There weren't any common 'adult' games and there weren't any fun popular online bootlegs like Barve Boy or Super Mario 7 either, it's just a very mediocre set of games. Saving is not supported so there are NO battery backed save games, that being titles like Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda 1 and 2 or Dragon Quest. There are also not really any password saving games weirdly enough. There are some hacks, including several takes on Contra with different cheats enabled, but no story hacks or visual hacks. The output is standard 4:3, so you can get the correct aspect ratio when loading on a modern TV, but there's some sort of crunchy, crackly filter on it meaning you get a very fuzzy, inconsistent image. There's no hotkey combination to reset to the menu, you need to go hit the reset button on the console. The Power and Reset buttons are inverted with Reset on the left and Power on the right. The controller ports are backwards with 1 on the right and 2 on the left. There are far better options out there, ideally you want to find something that lets you disable or choose the filtering mode and aspect ratio, and that runs off a memory card so you can swap in your own games and of course, that allows you to save. I was surprised by the quality of the controllers though, and I'm not sure as I don't have an OG NES sitting around anymore to check, but I think the controllers might work on real hardware, seems to be the same pinout, but I wouldn't bet on it. I flipflopped a lot between 2 and 3 stars but ultimately went with 3 because of the good performance and decent controller, you CAN play these games effectively, though what's on offer is pretty middling. ... show more
