  • Fantastic Music From Days Gone By
I did not know who Red Garland was until I found him recommended by Tim Richards (Exploring Jazz Piano) and Noah Baerman (Jazz Keyboard Method). So I ordered this CD, and I am completely satisfied with the purchase. The first few notes of the first cut, Please Send Me Someone To Love, resonated with me, and brought me back to the days when I first began listening to jazz on a Zenith portable phonograph. Red Garland's block chord melodies are beautiful. His single note runs sparkle like the sun on the ocean. The track list, culled from the Great American Songbook, is comfort food for the soul. This album should be considered for anyone's Desert Island List. It contains great music, and demonstrates great technique. Just make sure that you have a nice upright on the beach. ... show more

  • A piano genius
The Red Garland trio was very active in the 1950s, but new to me about a month ago. I love this CD of standards, gentle yet swinging. I went on to buy the 8 CD value set of Garland with various famous jazz artists, but I like this one the best.

  • Lovely, "Great American Songbook" renditions...
I think most fans of jazz recordings made between the end of World War II and the start of the Vietnam Era, the period I think of as the golden years of jazz, would not name Red Garland as one of the top ten or even top 15 pianists. Those slots would go to Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Errol Garner, George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, and many other candidates who left us many recordings on which they were soloists or leaders of groups small and large. Red Garland left relatively few tracks on which he was the leader, including this album. He was in the Coleman Hawkins band, the first quintet put together by Miles Davis and was a sideman on many, many recordings fronted by other artists. This 1957 Prestige release has him being helped by the great bassist Paul Chambers, and the competent drummer Art Taylor. The menu includes some very fine songs, and the Garland take is always pleasant and gently swinging. This version was remastered in 2005 by Rudy van Gelder, the engineer on the original sessions, and it sounds great. This CD is not one you will likely "study" unless you play piano yourself, but stick it in the player while driving, or as background at home while reading or paying the bills or on the computer, and you will have an excellent experience. The eight selections complement each other perfectly. While no part of this record screams "Master at work, pay close attention and you will hear something new" it does satisfy. The songs will be familiar to anyone with a good knowledge of '50's jazz and pop music, and Red's improvisations are just varied enough from the standard treatments of the tunes to produce smiles of surprise in casual listeners. ... show more

  • ... Followers will recognize this album as one of his finest..
Red Garland's Jazz Followers will recognize this album as one of his finest...although most music fans know Red Garland as the pianist with the famous Miles Davis Quintet, many don't realize he was a great boxing champion, who fought all the way to the Welter Weight Championship until his loss to the Great Sugar Ray Robinson. I was fortunate to see Red Garland "live" in New York City near the end, where he smiled and "tipped his hat to me"...sitting near me was his former Percussionist Arthur Taylor, and they had a tearful reunion. ... show more

  • Wonderful classic jazz piano with assistance instrumentals...
Didn't discover Red until recently. He and his various combos are a total pleasure. Fantastic accompaniment to dinner or cocktails. What I would call perfect classic dinner jazz music.

Red Garland was, and continues to be, one of the best. I bought this album for my 7 year old grandson who has been playing piano for 3 years, writes his own music and loves Jazz. He thought Red's music was great.
