The padding is only an inch thick, and the mattress is very firm, so I added a 2-inch memory foam mattress topper, and it's very comfortable now. I found the "inflating" process fascinating. But as the instructions say, it really does take 72 hours for it to reach it's full size, expanding a little further each day. I have noticed no smells, and the twin size that I purchased was easy to open up and place. I purchased this for a guest bedroom and I am very happy with it. The mattress arrived quick, and UPS was very professional in delivering it. I do have to say that the box is heavy, so two people are needed to move it around or have a dolly to move it. Once I got it unpackaged and onto the bed frame, all it took was to cut the plastic (cutting tool provided) and the mattress resumed its original size from the vacuumed sealed bag. I was a little nervous to buy this because I saw a lot of reviews say they’re using this for a guest room? But I actually needed a new mattress for my self and something comfortable because I just gave birth a couple of months ago and I deserve a good bed!! I like a firmer supportive bed, but I hate memory foam. This bed has a gel top as described and I feel personally to be much cooler and comfier than memory foam. I wanted to sleep on this mattress for a few months before writing a review. I've slept in it for about 2 months now and it is still so comfortable. It came in a long skinny package that was relatively easy to move up to my second floor apartment and the inflation process was quick and easy - I opened it up around 10 am and slept on it comfortably that same night. It is also pretty lightweight and it was easy to get from the floor to my bed frame by myself. It is actually a little softer than I expected, but I don't sink into it. The only drawback to the mattress is that the edge support isn't great, but for a mattress in a box, I think that is to be expected.
