  • A Rebel’s Fiber Flashlight
Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
When your fiber network acts like a cat5 cable chewed by raccoons, you don’t need a $5,000 OTDR—you need a light saber for the dark arts of fiber chaos. Enter the VFLTOOL 80KM Visual Fault Locator (VFL)...an under $100 aluminum and stainless steel wand that shouts "SHOW ME THE BREAKS!" in angry red laser. I tested it on everything from a haunted data center to my neighbor’s DIY "fiber-to-the-chicken-coop" project. At least this VFL is easy to use, even in the chickencoop! Here’s what I learned and how I did it. My Testing Methodology (Because Real Rebels Don’t RTFM) "How Far Can It Really See?" Spooled 12km of spare single-mode fiber in my barn (with intentional kinks). Don't ask why I have a bunch of single-mode and multi-mode fiber sitting around the barn. (I MAY have a tendency to hoard, but only a little.) Field Abuse I dropped it from the ladder (twice , neither time on purpose). Dunked it in coffee (more like knocked the coffee over on it). Left it overnight in -10°C "because in live in Colorado where it snows 12 months of the year at this elevation." Connector Roulette SC, LC, ST, FC—even frankensteined a DuPont jumper to test "what if?" (Spoiler: Don’t.) THE GOOD 80KM Range? More Like "80KM Optimism" Spotted faults at 15km (real-world max). Beyond that, you’ll need Jedi instincts. But for SMBs? Gold. It's like a telescope that sees Mars… if Mars was your neighbor’s roof. Indestructible(ish) It's aluminum body laughed off the two drops. The stainless-steel head survived being used as a bottle opener (this is NOT advised). Battery Life = Forever 2 AAs lasted for more than 28 hours (in pulse mode and YES, I forgot to turn it off). The low-battery warning actually works. Pulse Mode Saves Sanity Glinting red light cuts through spaghetti-cabling nightmares in ceilings and under raised floors (don't ask). Continuous mode? For masochists. Price-to-Power Ratio At 1/10th the cost of "pro" gear, it’s the duct tape of fiber tools. THE BAD "Professional" Is a Stretch No auto-shutoff. No waterproofing. No IP rating. Left outside, it’ll rust like a ’78 Ford. Adapters Are Janky FC-to-LC adapter wobbles like a drunk tightrope walker. Cold Weakness Below 0°C, the laser dims like my will to live during a blizzard. So What Does This All Mean? Buy It, But Don’t Marry It This isn’t the tool for any major carriers nationwide backbone—it’s for the rebels like me. BUY IT IF: You need a "good enough" VFL for under $100. Your workbench doubles as a wrestling ring for tools. You’ve ever muttered "I’ll fix it with a laser." SKIP IT IF: You’re troubleshooting transatlantic cables. You think "rugged" means "survives a nuclear winter." The Bottom Line It’s the punk rock of fiber tools—rough, loud, and weirdly effective. Just don’t ask it to play stadiums. ... show more

  • Costly, but effective
Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
This VFL is amazing. It's very bright, first and foremost which is a solid choice when troubleshooting. The bigger issue with it is you cannot put this VFL on an active PON circuit or it will absolutely fry the OLT in the office if you're sending it down a live circuit. It's functional in the sense of it's a VFL, has two modes for continuous wattage and glint (twinkle) to find your light on the fiber. It's easy to use because it's literally what it is for, a VFL and fault locating. This model is extremely durable and well made, so I can say certainly it won't break any time soon. Battery compartment is pretty standard. As far as value goes, let's just say it's extremely pricey for a VFL, but it's about as expensive as they get when you're looking for something that can laze as far as 80 kilometers.... That's the equivalent of going 50 miles, but with it being a VFL, it will probably reach anywhere from 20-30 miles at max... which is still a phenomenal distance to troubleshoot over. Overall: Quality item, but rather expensive and should only be purchased by those who are troubleshooting breaks in major trunkline fibers, not for your standard drop cable and hub length runs... for those I recommend anywhere from a 5mw to a 10mw VFL, with a 30mw at absolutely most. ... show more

  • This is a great VFL
Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
Having been a network engineer for over 30 years, I appreciate a high quality product when I see it. And boy, this does not disappoint. It is easy to use and super bright. It is definitely not one of the el-cheapo ones that I've had through the years. I tested it at work on a 40km single-mode fiber spool and it worked like a charm. It also worked on a 300m multi-mode fiber. Order with confidence. ... show more

  • Decent for Home Projects, But Not Built for the Pros
Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
I used this visual fault locator to test an optical cable, and while it did the job at home, the overall quality leaves something to be desired. The tool functions as expected, but it doesn't feel particularly robust or high quality. One key issue is the case design. If you're wearing it on your belt, there's a chance that when you're sliding it in, it might not engage with the bottom piece properly, potentially leading to a drop. This makes it less ideal for professionals who need reliable gear all day long. However, if you're just troubleshooting at home and need an affordable way to test a fiber optic cable, it might be a workable option. it's suitable for casual use, but probably not for someone who does this professionally. ... show more

Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
My use has been pretty basic mostly testing jumpers for faults. I'm relatively new to the fiber optic side of networking, having worked on connections, adapters, media converters and assisting with some long run pulls. Building out my knowledge of the trade and my tool kit! This VFL seems like a pretty functional tool. Very similar to another lower power one I have. Has been great for testing jumpers in IT closets and server rooms. Nice tool, no complaints. ... show more

  • High powered purple pen fault finder
Size: 80mW Visual Fault Locator + FC/LC Adapter Number of Items: 1
Pocket sized pen-light-type fault finder. Uses common AA batteries, not a special rechargeable, so less likely to get stuck with a flat. Mechanical build quality feels reasonable, though it hasn't been thrown around.
