If you're torn between this one and a cheaper model, get this one. I had the cheaper Klein tester and while it works fine the backlit display on this one and the additional features make my job a little easier. Having a built in toner is really nice. While I still use my fluke tools from time to time, I worry about this one less. I lost my last klein by leaving it in a ceiling grid somewhere. Hopefully someone out there is enjoying the free tool! It wasn't my first time leaving a tool and it probably won't be the last so having something that's multifunctional, reliable and not super expensive is great. ... show more

Easy to use, reliable tester. Cable length feature is nice when hunting down old wires. Being able to plug in the modules in multiple locations when things are not labeled saves a ton of time.

Works great. I can connect the cable from a piece of equipment and identify the port on the switch. The cable identifiers also work well for matching a patch panel jack to the wall jack. It identifies all kinds of wiring issues like open or swapped pairs. I think it's a great value for the price.

Originally, I was thinking about buying the Klein VDV526-200, but after using the VDV501-851, I think I made the better choice. I have wanted to rerun several Cat5e cables in the house for some time. The original runs were sloppily done, nothing was labeled, and it always bothered me. Thanks to the VDV501-851, it was easy to identify which run was which using the remote plugs that come with the kit. In the process of redoing everything, I found several issues with with patch cables I had done myself and found at least 1 pre-fabricated patch cable was also bad. None of that would have been possible without a proper cable tester. The only thing that bothers me about this tester is that there doesn't seem to be a way to put it into loop mode by default. When you use network mode, you have to manually hold down the network button for a couple of seconds to make the unit continuously poll the cable. While I haven't tried the coax or phone modes, I suspect it's the same. I'm now contemplating reworking several phone and coax runs in the house. I have no doubt the VDV501-851 will make those jobs so much easier. ... show more

This cable tester works great. I have used it to measure the length of cable. After programming the capacitance per foot of the cable into the tester I was able to get the length of the cable accurately.
