  • Buy this machine.
Since most people reading this are probably smokers, I will dispense with the "mea culpas" people seem to expect when you do something they personally disapprove of. :) As near as I can calculate, I've rolled over 1500 cigarettes with this machine with nae problems that weren't my fault. I've cut my smoking casts from $.25 to $.04 per cigarette. In fact, if the machine broke tomorrow, I could replace it and still have saved money. A *lot* of money. I am a professional level smoker, people. :) Some tips for you, if you are new to RYO (Roll Your Own)that have worked for me, but, your mileage may vary: Buy the machine online. locally, they sell for $20 to $40 more than from Quality. Do NOT use the powdery tobacco from the bottom of the bag. it WILL jam the machine. That "pop" you her when it jams is the (probably plastic) gears that drive the "spoon" that injects the tobacco into the tube trying to "strip". This is, from what I've read, the #1 cause of machine failure. I have never had a jam since I learned not to use the stuff from the very bottom. Don't over fill the loading tray. Over time, you will learn how much tobacco you need to pack in it. Over filling = potential jamming, and undue stress on the "gate" that closes over the tray. If the lever that activates the machine is hard to pull, you have too much tobacco in the tray. Don't pack too tightly. Read the instructions, fill from the center, and you'll consistently get a full, "tight" cigarette. Every. Time. If your fingers are less than slender, I suggest buying a $6 manual machine , and using the packing tool from it. This unit does not come with one. Occasionally, you will have some strings of tobacco hanging from the end of the finished cigarette. If this bothers you, you can get a tobacco cutter here on Amazon. I used to cut mine, and I used a $9 coffee bean grinder. From what I can tell from pictures the blades used in both look identical or very nearly so. If you do used a bean grinder, just 'bump' the switch once, then check your tobacco. The first time I used one, I wound up with a bowl of useless tobacco powder. Lesson learned. I no longer cut my tobacco. I assume with experience, that I learned something unconsciously that makes it an unnecessary step. If you *really* feel like you are wasting tobacco, go ye then to a big box discount store, and buy a hand held strainer/sieve, and you can put handfuls of tobacco in it, and sift out a lot of what causes the problem. I also put my tobacco on a paper plate, then transfer it to the machine, and over a rolling session, a lot of the junk will gravitate to the bottom. The unit does come with a nice, handy, cleaning kit for un-jamming it. Follow the instructions. If your kitchen table is not handy or appropriate for rolling, get a good quality folding "TV Table". I keep my equipment stored out of the way. I generally roll a carton at a time and can set up for rolling in about 2 minutes. I takes me, with this machine, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to roll over 200 cigarettes. You can probably do it faster, as I don't really get in any hurry. If you can get one, a cafeteria type tray to place the machine on will help with the mess. You WILL most likely wind up with tobacco everywhere. RYO cigs are larger in diameter than ready-rolls (commercial cigarettes). You will need something to keep them in. Most of the plastic "pocket boxes" I have tried are junk. I smoked cigarettes that came in hard packs before going rogue, and saved ten or twelve of them. They've held up well, but will only hold about 17 RYO. Amazon has many choices for storage. If you look, you'll likely find something you like. A friend of mine buys boxes intended for storing crayons from a big box discount store (You know the one I mean. Don't make me speak of the devil.), and says they hold ~ 35, and have a good."seal". I bought a couple of pocket cases, Tpingfe Smoking Cigarettes Aluminum Cigarette Case, intended to hold hard packed commercial smokes, and they work well, hold 20 cigs, but, a *bit* uncomfortable in the pocket. Shop around for tobacco. you can, around here (NW LA. Louisiana, not Los Angeles.) get a 5 ounce bag for around $6, and a 1 lb. bag for about $13. Try several 'till you find one you like. Amazon doesn't sell most things that tend to kill people, but there are plenty of online sources. You can find tobaccos that approximate the commercial brand you smoked before. For instance, there is a brand that claims to taste "just like the world's most popular cigarette", or, what we used to call "Cowboy Killers". (You know the one I mean.) Just don't think you're stuck with one brand. I use a brand called "Good Stuff' because I like the way it tastes, and it has a pleasant odor when burning. It took trying several brands to find it. In a pinch, as in, I've been a poor planner, the is a brand called "American Club" that I also use and like. Buy your tubes ( the paper and filter in a single unit) in bulk if you can. They don't spoil. Locally, tubes sell for ~ $3.80 to $4.50 per box of 200. I buy a brand off of Amazon called "Zen". You can get 1250 tubes (5 boxes of 250) for between $16 and $17. Also, these tube have a "full length" filter, and some of the other brands have a shorter filter. I.e., the filters in the Zen bran are the full length of the brown-colored part of the tube, as oppose to about half that. I mention this here only because I have had people to whom I have explained "rolling your own" to comment that they could make money with it. For the record, I am NOT a lawyer or a Law Enforcement Officer or in any way connected to either, but, I pretty sure if they catch you selling cigarettes without a tax stamp, it won"t go well for you. As a disclaimer, I am not a paid spokesperson or associated with Amazon.com or any of the products I have mentioned by name in any way. These are just some things I thought that if, like me, your were insane enough to still smoke, you should know, as they might benefit you. I hope this review has helped you in some way. ... show more

  • Best One I've Found (Despite it's 18 month longevity)
UPDATE 10/31/2015: This my fourth Powermatic 2 and you may wonder why I rate it at 5 stars? Simple, despite wearing out after 150-200 cartons of cigarettes if you prorate the cost it comes to less than $1.00 a carton, IT IS THE BEST CIGARETTE MAKING MACHINE ON THE MARKET! Including the $1.00 depreciation cost it costs me around $8.00 to produce a carton of cigarettes compared to $38 to $65 a carton of store bought cigarettes with many chemicals added to the tobacco. I can make a carton of cigarettes in about 1 hour while watching a football game, less if I give it my full attention. I do use the large hopper from an old version so can 'store' a couple of packs in the hopper making a faster operation. I also made a tamper that's is 5/16' x 1.25" wide, and 2" high. Actually it's an old keychain TV remote with tape around it. I overfill the slot and tamp only once at each side (2 tamps total) and the titanium coated blade cuts off any overfill and makes an even medium packed cigarette. After making a couple of packs I pause and using sharp kitchen shears cut off the excess (I only make kings) tobacco and the cigarettes looks like factory made. They keep improving this machine and hopefully they've improved how long it lasts before malfunctioning. Common malfunctions are tearing the end of the tube, not holding the tube at all, breakage of the arm inside that moves the injector (from overpacking), and motor failure. Only the first, old model, broke the arm, my second one kept tearing the end of the tube, and the third one stopped holding the tube altogether. Never had a motor failure. This new 'improved' version seems to be quieter, smoother, and they've removed the upper leftj front side of the case where the tube goes. This makes sense as excess tobacco seems to collect in and around that space so this allows some of it to self-clean and makes it easier to clean under it. I've tried just about all the cigarette machines, from manual to electric and no other product is as fast as this one while also making consistently packed cigarettes. The only negatives are it's life span and it need to be shipped with a larger hopper. But like I said for the pro-rated cost you still come out way ahead and it isn't too hard to make a larger hopper out of cardboard or plastic sheets & tape. UPDATE 10/6/2015 I have bought 3 of these starting in 2013 and I make on average 10-12 cartons per month and after talking to other users and my own experience have found that this product only lasts 12-18 months before problems start. The most common is tearing of the end of the tube which still is a usable cigarette but aggravating. The next problem is not holding on to the tube while it injects which can be fixed by taping a piece of folded (3X) paper in front of the tube holder. I am ordering the 3rd one this week. So why do I still rate it at 5 stars? Well, it's the best one out there and even if you do have to replace it within say 15 months, if you prorate the cost it is not that expensive compared to the cost of buying pre-made cigarettes. I have opened up one of these devices and took it apart and it is a very complicated machine with close tolerances, not easily repaired, and labor intensive to make. My suggestion if if you have any problem at all in the first 30 days immediately ask Amazon for return because if will soon fail. Over the years I've most likely tried all the different types of rolllers, from manual and electric. There is NO OTHER PRODUCT on the market better than this particular model. The one with the large plastic hopper is poorer quality and will fail quickly but that hopper will fit this product and that's what I use because it saves a lot of time. Otherwise make your own hopper for quicker roiling. Also make your own or adapt some other product for a "packer". Using your fingers doesn't produce an evenly packed cigarette and is to slow. For an average packed cigarette I use a packer that is about half the width of the slot and pack down once or twice and even if overfilled it will still only grab what it needs to fill the tube. So in closing, if you are on the fence about ordering this product, get off, and purchase it. It won't last forever but will last for quite a while and I figure a carton is costing me about $7.00 so even if I add a $1.00 replacement "tax" on each carton it is still a good return on investment. They also advertise a 1 year warranty through the dealer which I've never used as it always last at least over that time but I've read here you have to pay shipping both ways. EDIT AFTER 9 MONTHS: It's still going strong although sometimes it tears the end of the tube by not releasing the tube at the right time. Seems to be after using it for a while, about 180 cigarettes in. Maybe it gets hot inside the case but by not inserting the tube all the way it solves that problem. No doubt this is the best RYO machine out there and the positive reviews show that. This "new & improved" version corrected the injector ramming part breaking and the titanium cutter smoothly cuts off any excess tobacco. Tighter tolerances means less rejects and mine never jams but I use a small device to "pack" the tobacco instead of my finger. Look around your house for anything with the right width to fit the slot and adapt it as a packing tool and you'll get consistent output. Don't over pack just tap it down and close the lever. I use a sharp pair of shears to cut the excess off and they look factory made (put the trimmings in the next batch). If you have a piece of hardwood to shape as a packer it will even be better. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've pretty much experimented with most of the retail electric injectors and this one wins the prize. Not only for the price which is great compared to other sites but it just makes consistent cigarettes and once you get in a rhythm, quickly. If you also pack the right side tight you will most likely have more jams. With my method and using king-sized tubes it actually over fills which I clip off with a sharp pair of scissors and this leaves the end smooth and still tightly packed like a commercially made cigarette. I use Oho brand pipe tobacco from Quaag and it is the right cut and right moisture content right out of the airtight bag every time. But for 3+ cartons out of a 1# bag, even including shipping, it averages out to $7-$8 a carton. It sure is a heck of a lot better than the $50-$65 a retail carton in Florida. ... show more
