Overall, this shave oil delivers a very good quality to price ratio, and I am inclined to recommend it. But, is it the best at what it does? Detailed ratings to follow. Packaging - 5/5: Nicely boxed and labeled. Looks classy and professional, which tends to foster confidence in the product inside. So, good start there. Bottle has a nice little pump, which makes for easy dispensing. Very nice touch. Scent - 4/5: While probably not the most photorealistic, bougey (sp?) rendition of sandalwood, I'm inclined to give this one high marks. It smells good to me. Some sandalwoods come off smelling like baby wipes to my nose - this one does not. Very close to what I was after, if a bit muted. Could be a bit stronger, but then I also wouldn't want this to trample all over whatever fragrance I decide to wear. As it is, it's noticeable and also complimentary, all without being intrusive. Comfort/Protection: 3/5: I have to be honest here. It is a bit on the thin side for me. My guess is the overuse of grape seed and olive oils to cut the thickness of the castor oil in it. I would have gone with less. But again, to be fair, I've used other shave oils that were so thick as to be kind of sticky and requiring some extra cleanup after shaving. This one does not. But it also doesn't protect quite as well. Good enough, but if I'm splitting hairs here (pun intended), I'd wish for something a bit clingier for better skin protection, even at the expense of the aforementioned negatives. Comfort first! Cleanup - 5/5: This stuff - again because it's relatively thin, does clean up very easily, requiring little more than a quick cold water rinse. And again, it smells damn good, so I'm not really inclined to want to clean it off anyway. :) Bottom line: Smells great, a bit thin. May actually blend it with a thicker variety to get the best of both worlds. Kind of wish they made an entire line using this scent or a somewhat stronger version of it. I'd even buy a big bottle of this stuff to use as hair styling oil (dry scalp/hair). It's early, but assuming I can get past its minor comfort/protection shortcomings, I'll probably be buying this oil again once my bottle runs out. ... show more

Game-changing performance. I really love this stuff. I bought the original scent. I'm interested to try whatever else they have. It's not a strong aroma. Not sure if anyone else is going to notice unless they're really close, but for me it's a scent that reminds me I'm worthwhile. I should tell my story: when I turned 18, Gillette sent me a free mach 3 razor with a "Be All That You Can Be" reminder for draft registration. I've used that handle for years. The blades are expensive, but it worked so I kept up with it. Then Gillette made their war on masculinity ad. I know that my personal decision to boycott Gillette isn't going to matter to them. But I also know the feeling I got every day picking up that stupid razor. Every time I saw it, it reminded me that I'm garbage. As a 36-year-old single man who always wanted to get married, but hasn't been able to make that happen yet, I know that everything in that ad said that I'm not needed, showing interest in women is wrong, and that anything masculine about me needs to be shut up and thrown away. So I made a decision to switch to a safety razor like thousands of others. Shaving is a daily ritual that can help you or hurt you. shaving with Gillette products makes you feel like a degenerate byproduct like car exhaust or deforestation. Shaving with a safety razor and this pre shave oil, makes me feel like I'm worth something. It makes my shave closer and smoother than anything I've ever experienced before. The smell makes me feel valuable. I leave my bathroom feeling like I've paid to have a shave at an expensive barber shop. Every whiff I get of it throughout the day reinforces that feeling. I don't believe Gillette is right about men. I think they're a stupid misguided company trying to make a buck off SJW politics. Be a man. Treat yourself like one. Buy this oil, rub it all over your face and neck every morning and feel like you ought to. Excellent stuff that doesn't try to sell itself as anything other than a shaving product, but unintentionally imparts a message of self-worth and value to the men who use it. Scent: Original Scent
This is the 4th shaving oil I have tried and it is turning in to the best choice. I first tried one from the art of shaving (I saw the shop in a mall). I liked the oil but the bottle was a real pain as it doesn't have an applicator, so you open it and end up wasting some because too much pores out. Their oil is thicker than this one but American shaving' has a great applicator to give you the amount you want every time. As far as the art of shaving's oil is thicker I found that to be more of a problem than a plus. First off it leaked in my kit while traveling and at $16.00 an ounce it was a real waste plus it did leave a lot of residue oil. The others I tried were ok but I was not that impressed with the results. I do have a beard so I am just shaving the neck area and cheeks. The American Shaving oil works great in that it is all I use. I don't use shave cream and so far I am getting the best and closest shave I have ever had. When I apply the oil I also put some on my beard and it has made it much softer so it doubles its uses. The company seems to be all about customer service, I had a few questions and their reply was rapid and helpful. Update. April 27,2018. Now that I have been using this product for just about 6 months I must say it is the best shaving product I have used. I am able to get about twice the life out of my blades while still getting a great shave. Another update. Feb 2019, yes I am still using the product and they have made some changes but this is still a great product with fantastic customer service. ... show more
