I ordered this backplate along with my Nest from Amazon after reading the reviews and all the positive comments on how much better it looked. However, I also noted the reviews that commented on how this item could be improved if the backside were CNC’d with identions for the mounting screws. I didn’t notice any “New & Improved” details in the product description, but on arrival, it appears they have taken these comments and implemented them. I have attached a photo of the back of mine and they have clearly adapted to allow for the head of the screw so that it doesn’t cause any issues in mounting. If you don’t use the Nest metal plate then this really doesn’t matter, but if you do, this is a huge plus when it comes to mounting it. Sincere “thank you” to the manufacturer for accepting customer comments and making the requested improvements. Not sure when the design changed, but mine was ordered March 2019. On a side note, I ordered the copper color Nest and this trim plate in white. I pondered the copper one instead but thought it may be too much. The contrasting white/copper looks alright, but I wish I would have just stayed with the matching color. ... show more

The finish is very nice, and it's not just a flat plate on the wall. The design is very nice but then if you don't align the base correctly then the Nest may not have enough clearance for rotating and pushing down. STOP: if you replace the faceplate for the existing installation then you need to turn off the power so that it doesn't short when removing the wires. These steps are recommended for new installation, otherwise, go straight to step 4. 1. Put the base (for wiring) on the original wall place (supplied by Nest). This plate has the guides so that the base sit perfectly on it. 2. Align the plate/base with the water level bubble. 3. Screw in the supplied screws, no need to go all the way in. 4. Remove the screw and use the new wall plate. 5. Screw in the screws to the same holes in step 3 but not too tight, leave room for adjusting the wall plate. 6. Now, adjust the wall plate and the base so that they are straight and the base is in the middle of the circle by eye balling the gaps between the circle and the base. 7. When I first saw the price, I didn't understand the reason, but then I held it in my hand. It's a solid piece of CNC'd metal, powder coated. I also really like that it's low profile compared to other similar rounded products. But there's a reason I gave it 3 stars... lets get to that. The back is flat. A plane (see photos). This means that any use of the steel plate (from the nest trim kit that many of you need to attach the nest properly over an electrical box), and any screws used to hold it in, will cause this wall plate to extend beyond the wall that it's mounted against (see my photos where I have one screw in and one out to show the difference, or any of the other contributed photos where this is happening). Given the sturdy nature of the material, I think they could have easily inset a ring with the CNC machine over the area on the back that would have contained the screws, or even better, the steel plate for the trim kit. It seems they are aware of the problem and include flat head screws with the product. This feels like a lazy attempt to solve the problem because the problem still exists, the plate is just a little less raised. All they'd have needed was a 1/16" (or better yet 3/32") inset for the steel plate to make this problem significantly better. Other problems with the plate that I had was what seems an imperfect bit of metal that was CNC'd. Mine had a very tiny pock in it. I'm not sure it's worth returning it for, I may just try and paint over it or fill it with some toothpaste or something... As always... uploading photos. ... show more

Most likely if you are looking at this wall plate, you think the white square Nest plate is hideous. Why do they think a rectangular trim plate goes with a round thermostat? And why not color match it? This wall plate is so much better than the Nest wall plate and it’s likely better than the other ones I looked at made of plastic or metal ones with no real finish to them. The color matches well and you can tell it’s sturdy based on the weight. Install was easy, popped off everything from the wall and put the wall plate and and the Nest wiring late. Screwed in the top and bottom wholes into the wood backer in my wall and wired it up. Pushed the Nest onto the wiring plate and it was done. I should have taken a pic of the plate alone, front and back but didn’t think to do that. I got it to hide old screw holes and unpainted areas but even if I fix those issues later on, I will likely end up using the trim ring. It looks so natural like it was meant to go with the thermostat. I think it gives a retro look to the whole thing. ... show more

This wall plate matches the color of the copper Nest yet has a slightly different finish (more matte than the Nest). It's a painted finish over soft metal. It's an average-quality product produced in China. It's a bit snugger on the fit with the Nest thermostat than the wooden bases so you will have to carefully center the base inside the wall plate so that the Nest thermostat easily turns. It works fine; it simply has tighter tolerances. Please note, the wall plate has four screw slots (see depiction). If you place mounting screws in the slots at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions you must recess the slots with a "countersink bit" so that the Nest base will fit flush inside the wall plate. Placing screws in the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions allow you to keep the plate in place without the need for the Nest base. If you only utilize the slots at the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock positions then you place the Nest base inside the wall plate and then screw both the Nest base and wall plate with the same screws. ... show more
