  • Works well! A little unweildy
Bought this along with the Pentax K-3 a few weeks ago. In addition to doubling battery capacity (which is great with time lapse, night photography and video in the middle of nowhere), a number of the controls (shutter, ISO, Exposure, Exposure Lock, a second On/Off switch and the two wheel controls) have been duplicated on the grip portion, allowing you to easily take portrait shots without having to twist your hand over or under the body; instead you just hold it as if in landscape. Very useful! Two alignment pins on the top of the grip ensure that the contacts to connect to the camera are perfectly lined up: a useful feature. Another rather thoughtful thing that Pentax took care of: normally the contacts on the camera portion are covered by a rubber cap when the grip is not attached to protect from dust and corrosion. However, this needs to be removed when the grip is being screwed on. But where do you put that cap? In your pocket? Answer: one of the two depressions on the grip itself hold the rubber cap perfectly, and don't seem to have any other purpose, as the bottom of the camera is relatively flat. Maybe on another model these would be useful, but on the K-3 they happen to hold that rubber cap perfectly. Way to think it through, Pentax! The On/Off was a bit confusing. It does not actually cycle power on the camera itself; just the battery pack. So it's more of a Battery Grip control lockout function. Also the grip itself is a bit unwieldy. Sure, it's heavy like the camera, but with a stock lens attached, the grip seems to throw the entire assembly over its balance point and causes the camera to fall forward when sitting loose on a flat, hard surface. Another qualm I have with it: if I'm trying to use the camera in landscape with the grip attached, my right palm tends to depress the shutter button on the grip which causes the camera (and in particular the rear display) to appear like it's malfunctioning. Yes, I suppose the grip's On/Off switch would fix this problem, but more often than not, this is not what I'm thinking about when setting up for photos. ... show more

  • Well thought out and very useful battery grip that makes the camera ergonomics even better
It's the little things. This grip comes with a snap-on protective cover for the contacts, and the camera has a rubber cover for the female contacts. When you get ready to use this grip, *both* covers have a slot on the grip to hold them. Very thoughtful. The batter compartment can use either the standard Pentax battery or AA cells. I love the fact that if you have a battery problem you can resort to AA as a backup. During a recent 2 day track meet, about 6 hours of shooting each day, I was unable to exhaust the grip and camera. So, I would say with confidence that the added capacity this grip offers gives you at least 12 (probably much longer) hours of run time. The grip is not heavy by itself, loaded with rechargable AA it adds a few ounces to the camera but makes it easier to hold. I did find I turned off the controls on the grip as I kept bumping them while holding the camera. That's easily done. Maybe the grip controls would be useful in some circumstances, but I didn't need them. Ergonomically, Pentax rocks. This grip enhances the function, battery life, and even has sockets for the protective covers. ... show more

  • A must have for the Pro-Shooter in you!
Great addition to my Pentax K-3. It is a "macho" like feature. The K-3 is already a solid camera, with this grip it will add additional heft. I was considering not using it until I actually took it to a concert and I had low battery on my camera. This grip came to rescue. From then on I decided I will keep the grip on. The additional dials and button available in the portrait mode make this grip a knock-out. It is perfect. I am only giving it four stars because it does add weight. (Full disclosure: this is my first DSLR, so not really accustomed to the weight concerning a camera). ... show more

Been using the battery grip for a couple months now, and I must say it is great. There are other aftermarket versions of this but reading other reviews it is not weather sealed. This is weather sealed, came with AA battery adapter with a built in SD card holster. I could have easily veered towards the non Pentax grip, but for what I'm gonna use it for I def need the seal. It's very versatile, button map locations are well placed. If you need a grip, and the seal for those down and dirty 😉 shooting this is a good add on ... show more

It is a Pentax made to fit my K-3ii. The quality is high and the fit is perfect. I miss the compartment for the IR remote that was in the old Pentax grips but that is my only complaint. I do not use the AA battery pack because Amazon has a deal on a 2900 mAh battery for $2.99 each and they really are what they claim to be. It is cheaper to buy a bunch of Li backup batteries than mess with AAs. Search for the DLI90 battery with 2900 mAh to go with this. ... show more

  • I highly recommend this grip
This is a solid addition to my K3. Even though it adds a little weight for carrying, it substantially increases the mass of the camera package with a resulting stability increase (less shake) for those hand held shots that one must take quickly and without forethought. The additional battery and flexibility as to type of power source only add to the utility of this accessory. I've tried the china made non-Pentax grip at much less price and found it thin, light and flabby. This one, however, is solid, substantial......confidence building. I highly recommend this grip. ... show more

  • Yet again Pentax leads the world
I have used the battery grips on Pentaxes since the *-ist (stupid name, but what a camera!). Like most things, Pentax only change something when there is a sound non profiteering reason. This model not only holds the spare memory card and the same battery as used in the K-5 line, but comes with a separate carrier which in an electrical emergency can be loaded with AA batteries to enable you to continue photographing until you can recharge your main battery. it improves the balance of the camera when used in portrait alignment. I commend it to anyone lucky enough to own a K-3 ... show more
