  • Great product—came slightly damaged
Panpastels are an amazing product and this is a good price for them compared to other sources. The set also comes with a good number of tools. But 4 of my 20 pans came damaged. It was not the shipping because a second set of them in the same delivery box was perfect. Because of the nature of the product they are still usable but it is frustrating as they are an expensive product. ... show more

  • Beautiful, Smooth Application
Panpastels are quickly becoming my favorite pastels to use. I started with the portrait set, as it had the colors I use most, to try them out and fell in love with them. Hint: if you want just a few for seascapes, landscapes or portraits, then those specialized sets are good deals! But, if you want all the colors in this line, buy the Tints, Painting, Shades, and Extra Dark Shades sets instead and that will give you the full line with no repeats. These are pricy, but for the quantity you get (as in, the amount of color per disk) it's comparable to the cost of other artist-grade pastels and even, in cases such as Unison, often much more cost-effective. Plus, you don't have all the dust and falling debris that plagues the softer stick pastels. These sets come with some Sofft tools: 1 round, 1 finger-tip shaped, a few wedges, a few short wands, and two applicators - one with a rounded filbert-like head and one square, along with some replacement sponges for the heads. It does not come with the triangular applicator - but it can be bought separately. These can be used to create art on their own or combined with any other pastel or dry media, such as charcoal and graphite. Because of their softness and the ease of spread, they can be used to create mist, smoke, and other effects on watercolor paintings. They are, however, a little on the semi-opaque side. Meaning, they don't cover as well as stick pastels do. So if you like to outline your work, keep this in mind and use pastel pencil colors as close to the local color as you can get because unless you want to put on a bunch of layers, the lines will show through. Exceptions being the darker shades and, of course, black. ... show more

  • Changed my view of pastels for the better!
I did not like pastels, at all. I had seen some beautiful artwork, done by another artist, and, he used Panpastels. He raved about how nice they applied, etc. He was not lying. I LOVE these pastels so much! I already bought the 20 Color Set Painting Pure Colors and absolutely loved those, so, I decided to purchase this 20 Color Set Tints. Goodness, they are so buttery and creamy, and so beautiful to apply. The sets come with Sofft Tools to start. It does not come with the oval or pointed spatula, just the flat and the round. It also comes with small applicator sponges, like the ones that look like eyeshadow sponges, and some other sponges, enough to get you started. They stack for storage, like those little plastic containers that you would store beads in. I recommend buying the clear palettes that they sell separately, that you can put them in. If you want to store them separately, you have to buy extra lids, which they sell. What I've also found is that the paper I used, meant everything! Use Pastelmat, if you can. Also watch tutorials, online, that explore the many things you can do with these pastels. You may also feel that it's a bit pricey, but, they are so highly pigmented that it will take a VERY LONG time before you get to the bottom of the pan. I use these Panpastels with colored pencils and pastel pencils. Overall, I love this product and I'm very happy with the purchase. In, my photo, I mainly show the brighter colors, but, you get the gist. The Tints colors are amazing for creating skin tones, too! Amazing product. ... show more

  • Wonderful set of colors!
These pastel colors are great to use as soft backgrounds for art work, especially for colored pencil pictures, because the pastel doesn't discolor a wax or oil-based pencil drawing. They are pricey, but worth every penny. And they're forgiving, because if you make an error, you can erase them easily and try again. They come with a small selection of useful applicators. Since the pans come stacked together, they are not that easy to access individually, and there are only four pan lids - one for each stack of five pans. So I recommend you also buy a pan pastel palette to store them in. Pan pastels are low-dust, unlike pastel sticks which can get quite messy to use. They are easy to apply with the included tools, but you should spray a fixative on the finished artwork to keep the pastel from smudging. I think they're a great medium for the colorist's toolkit, and this selection of shades is the best for backgrounds. ... show more

  • Some are Crumbled
I love these pan pastels but I’m on my 4th replacement order. Every set I’ve ordered has come with several of the colors crumbled and useless. I am hoping to have a full set at some point.

  • Love these Panpastels!
LOVE THESE PASTELS! Not a fan of National Art Supply - spoke with Dan today about a possible return because the panpastels arrived broken and that wasn’t his fault. He explained that I had to go through Amazon for my return. He was helpful but the condescending attitude and rudeness I could do without. Going to get them replaced using another company. ... show more

  • Great product
Pan pastels are expensive but worth the price. I love the colors and they last. They can be used for any type of drawing/painting and can be used with other types of pastels.
