I was planning a trip to Costa Rica during the wet season and planned to stay in the mountains. I bought a bunch of stuff both on Amazon and REI and one might say I over prepared. I ended up with some things I didn't use, some things I used but didn't need some things that didn't work, some that did, and some that exceeded my expectations. This hat exceeded my expectations and has earned a spot in my hiking, travel, and camping kit. It's an amazing waterproof hat, that was comfortable, packable and functional. I know I listed it second, but the best thing this hat has going for is its packable. I'm not going to say you can't find specialty hats that are better for certain conditions, but none of them are as versatile, or packable. Being able to fold this up in a backpack or even fanny pack and have it still give very good sun protection, excellent rain protection and decent wind protection is huge. I used this hat in the cloud forest in costa rica, in the lower altitude jungle, and in a drier forest. I wore it through major downpours without my head getting wet, and it breathed a decent amount. On the hottest day >90 in the sun I felt a little hot, not unbearable but I'd take it off in the shade and not as nice as a more breathable or straw hat but i still got good sun protection. On my hike back that day it dumped a huge amount of rain for thirty minutes. With thisvhat and a good rain jacket i stayed dry and comfortable. The brim isn't extremely large or sturdy, and I like how you can velcro up one or both sides, but if you are expecting a huge amount of wind you might want a hat with a firmer wider brim. Again if you are hiking primarily in the sun on a hot day there are better hats. But if you need a hat that is good in most conditions, you can fold up in a small size, and is exceptionally waterproof you need this hat.

Nice lid. The only criticism I have is that OR put the logo on the front dead center. My old OR hat from the 90’s, that someone stole (was still going strong) was badgeless. I preferred the cleaner look also why sew a logo into a waterproof Gortex piece like this. Despite that, still on of the best.

I was worried that the fit would be too small. It was perfect! Since this is a rain hat, I would’ve liked a slightly wider brim, maybe 3/4 to 1 inch more. A bit on the pricey side, but OR products are good quality. Taking to Alaska.

Wish I had bought one of these sooner. The Goretex keeps my head dry, the wide brim keeps the rain off my neck, and the chinstrap helps on blustery days. I could do without the name brand stitched on the back but I can live with it.
