  • Impressed with this Preamp !
I really wanted to dislike this unit. But in all honesty I’m impressed with it for the price, very impressed !!! If this came with a remote for the volume……it’d be one heck of a unit. How about it OSD ? Add an alps volume control with remote, or anything to give us remote control over the volume..I’m buying and I’m sure others would too. I bet sales would increase big time. It has great definition, clear…clean…Sound. I put it up against my old McIntosh C31V and it sounds every bit as good, actually sounds cleaner and I’ve got the tone controls all set level. Balance is perfect and it’s throwing good imaging, bass, midrange and high’s all sound as they should. No coloration that I can hear, just great clean sound ! Very Happy with this preamp purchase and it was delivered ahead of time too ! Came faster than expected ! So how about it OSD, build us a unit with a remote control ! For the volume ! I just wanted to add that I used a small piece of masking tape, put it over the red LED light and then used a black marker to tone down the brightness of that light. Works great. ... show more

  • That 70's receiver sound
I purchased to link into a home theater receiver in living room. (not my high end system). I needed it for it's phono input and maybe a simple analog tone control as I would be disabling the digital processing in the receiver. Let me tell you what happened... I plugged my B O Rx2 turntable with fitted soundsmith smmc 3 cartridge in an analog input. The cartridge alone costs over 3 times what this preamplifier costs... I set the Yamaha receiver to pure direct bypass. The phono section in the OSD pre 1 is dead quiet and had plenty of gain for the fairly low output smmc cartridge. I ended up engaging the variable loudness and slight reduction in the mid tone control and the spectral balance was perfect. The variable loudness was not typical of the "variable" types that create hugh suckouts rendering them useless. It provided that true bass slam of those 70's and 80's receivers that is all but gone in today's receivers. Controls are accurate and effective, balance, tone, and push switches seem solid, as well as the power switch. I'm very experienced in high end equipment and have owned Krell, Parasound, Emotiva, Sunfire, BK, Nad, Rotel to name a few. So trust me, this preamp will not degrade your sound and provide the control you need. The bass is clean and tight. The generation of audiophiles and music lovers seeking that punchy, clean, non harsh, analog sound have an opportunity here in this product. I would assume it would not have the tranparency of high end equipment, but what good is that if you have ear fatigue after a few songs and no way to customize the spectral balance of the sound... Highly recommended, get 1 before they're gone or discontinued. ... show more

  • Works just fine
Just set this up. First off, it shipped timely, came well packed and arrived in perfect condition. Seller deserves 5 stars. Now for performance. (This is being used with a solid state Kenwood M1 -100 watt per channel power amp running through Klipsch Icon KB-15 bookshelf speakers hooked to a Klipsch sub-woofer, just for reference) All inputs function properly. All controls function properly. Sound is fine, nothing exceptional, but fully satisfactory for a preamp of this price. Separation is fine, depth is fine, tone is fine, again nothing exceptional, but very satisfactory. So for basic performance everything is doing what it should and how it should. The fine details: As mentioned in othe reviews, the volume knob is extremely touchy. With my 100 watt amplifier I don’t turn it up past 1/3 of total volume, and it is detented so getting the volume where you want it is difficult. ( solved this by buying a small in line volume knob to run between this pre-amp and the power amp. Cost about $12.00 on Amazon. Easy fix. Thanks to other reviewers for that heads up so I was prepared with my fix when I received this pre-amp). There is some low level cross talk from other inputs. ( just make sure that you turn off the other devices you have connected to this pre-amp and this is eliminated. In other words, even if you have the input for your CD player not selected, if you then select the input for your tuner, there will be a very slight sound from the CD player still coming through. Solution is don’t play you CD player while listening to your tuner, and don’t leave the tuner on when listening to the CD player, etc. A bit inconvenient, but not a deal breaker. Again thanks to previous reviews for that heads up. So, all in all, this item is exactly what I expected. It is a basic fully functional pre-amplifier that functions as it should and as I expected. For the money, it can’t be beat ( not to mention that there is no other pre-amplifier even made or sold in this price range). So if you are only looking for exactly what this is, and you don’t want to pay a minimum of $1000.00 for the next least expensive pre-amp out there, this is your next pre-amp. The only one made, the only one sold and the only one available to function as an acceptable pre-amp for your stereo setup. Hope this helps others in the same quandary that I was in when considering this purchase. ... show more

  • Incredible value
I'm pairing the Pre-1 with a Rotel RB970BX power amp. I was previously using an Adcom GTP-506 tuner/multi room preamp which had features I don't use. I hoped to replace the Adcom with Preamp/Streamer. The units, NAD C658, $2K, or or the BluOS $600, I found were either more than I wanted to pay or were short on preamp functions I would like. Admittedly the Pre-1 is very simple, had no subwoofer output, but does have a phono stage, although not using as I have a Pro-ject pre box S2 plugged into one of the aux outputs. The Pre-1 has with the exception of a streamer all I need. It worked perfectly right out of the box with surprisingly good build quality, and reasonably good specs. I'm using an inexpensive ESS DAC $120, with Bluetooth converter. for streaming. At some point I would like to get an audiophile quality unit like the NAD but for now the Pre-1 does what I need and was seriously cheap for what it offers. ... show more
