  • Very Pleased
The sound produced from this needle is fantastic. I began with the 10 and now upped to the 20. There is a slight sonic improvement due to the fact that unlike the 10, the 20 is a nude elliptical eliminating the 10,s bonding to a different metal. The 10 is elliptical also. I am thinking of eventually upping to the 30 because of the fact that the diamond is a "fine line" and can even do deeper in the grooves and extract more sound. I will probably stop there because for the price of the 40 you could almost buy a whole new turntable and I am not sure at this point I would be able to tell a difference. Maybe if I hit the lottery. ... show more

  • Better Than Expected
I spent a lot of time researching both the Ortofon OM 10 and OM 20 as a replacement stylus for the OM 5 ( which was the included cartridge for a turntable I purchased about a month ago). I guess the OM 5 is an OK entry level but it didn’t take long to realize its shortcomings. Grainy vocals. Rather sloppy sounding. No air between performers. Kinda of “smeary”. Disappointing to say the least. I was considering other manufacturers cartridges as well but the turntable manufacturer highly suggested an Ortofon. I am happy they did. The OM 20 is a revelation. Very relaxed vocals but dynamic when called upon. Very natural. Wonderful soundstage. Deep fast bass. Pretty much what one would expect from a mid to hi if cartridge. I was truly surprised and could not be happier. The combination of Amazon and Audio Advisor can’t be beat for stereo gear. If you are looking for a cartridge to replace an entry level (but it really compares to any cartridge I’ve heard in the $500-$600 range) don’t hesitate to buy the OC 20. It’s a fabulous complement to my turntable and other gear. I couldn’t be happier. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • An absolutely necessary upgrade
The Pro Ject T1 came with the Ortofon 5E which honestly for the price is a very decent setup. I started poking around for upgrades and after reading the reviews here I bit the bullet and spent $200 on the smallest piece of plastic I’ve ever bought in my life and my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. For comparison, I put Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, full of cymbals and plenty of consistent bass and gave the 5E one last spin. I hooked up the 20 after side 1 finished and started it over and today (4/1/23) is the day that I learned how music should sound. Sounds that I didn’t know existed came from my speakers and if I close my eyes, Paul Simon could have been signing 6 feet in front of me with an entire orchestra performing with him. Incredible. Do yourself a favor and purchase one of these and you can thank yourself for doing so. ... show more

  • Wow
Well, it was time for a new stylus and I decided to make the jump from a 5E stylus to this 20. I think this thing ruined a couple of records for me, but not in the way that you might think. The 5E is a really great stylus, especially when you consider the price. It resolves very well across all frequencies and tracks like a champion. The 20 is basically the 5E on steroids. It's ability to resolve tiny nuanced details is uncanny. Cymbals have an entirely new dimensionality, tiny nuggets of information that were, before, buried in the mix, now emerge much closer to the surface, the oscillation of low frequency synths is crisper and sounds like it's ripping the air around you in two, you can feel exactly how hard a guitar string is plucked. Your brain immediately focuses in on these now-prominent elements of songs that it's accustomed to, and it does make you feel like you haven't heard them properly before to a certain extent. So, why did it ruin some of my records? I have a group of records that I considered to be in the top tier of my collection in terms of both mastering and physical quality. It includes some new 45rpm MoFi records, very very clean early presses of some of my favorite albums, as well as some other newer presses that I regarded very highly. Turns out, 50% of those records are really not as good as I had initially thought. The difference between the super high quality MoFi records and my "really good" normal releases became painfully apparent immediately. They still sound pretty good, but I think even an untrained ear would be able to tell the difference in quality now. One thing to keep in mind if upgrading from another OM cartridge: the 20 requires a very precise alignment. Records I had no problem with using my 5E started skipping CONSTANTLY all of the sudden, and deep bass lines started to produce noticeable IGD. I finally pulled out my Geo Disc to check it and it was just a hair off, so I decided to monkey with it. After 30 minutes and one beer, I finally had the stylus lined up. I put on a very challenging song that it wasn't previously able to handle and it tracked perfectly. No IGD either. It's worth noting, the stylus itself has a lot of left to right play when it's actually set down. Aligning the stylus correctly on the Geo Disc required turning the cartridge body a little bit inward past where it is square with an alignment grid. After listening to a few records, I'm pretty confident that lining the stylus up is much more important than worrying about the cartridge body. Long read, I know, but there is very little information on the forums about these cartridges compared to others. If you're still reading down here, I hope this helped! Buy this or go full stupid and get the 30 or 40. ... show more

  • Worth the money for upgrade
I really didn’t expect to hear much of a difference. Boy, was I wrong. The 20 is definitely brighter and a much fuller sound. I was astounded. Worth every penny

  • A great step up from OM10
The media could not be loaded. This stylus is a great step up from the already quite good OM10 : more details and punch. The price starts to be on a high side but still more affordable than OM30 and OM40, and worthy for the sonic upgrade.
