Unless you buy a computerized telescope for a lot of money there's no getting around the fact you'll need to invest a little time learning about things like Right Ascension and Declination. I won't go into the things you need to know to view the planets and other astronomical objects, just do your homework on that first. To view objects you need to set the ez-finder up correctly, it's very easy to do, but you need to invest the time to understand that task. Once done you can sight any star with it and even the 10mm eyepiece will have it in view. I'll just address a few nuts and bolts impressions of this scope, from an engineer's perspective. It's an excellent price for a well made item. The main tube that houses the primary and secondary mirrors is metal and sturdy. The equatorial mount is metal and solid. The tripod is lightweight with aluminum legs and offers plenty of support. Overall I felt it was built well, the RA and DEC fine adjustments worked perfectly. The parts that matter most are the eyepieces and mirrors, I've looked at the moon, Jupiter ( with moons), Mars, and Sirius so far and they look great. I appreciate that Orion makes this product, they did a good job. Years ago I bought a large 8" Dobsonian for my daughter, that was a mistake in that it was too big to manage, although it delivered great views. This scope is compact, light-weight, and easy to transport. Kids tend to lose interest if you make something a burden, so I would recommend keeping it simple, but still giving them the challenge of learning how it all works. This is a great scope for that. Since my kids are grown now it's still perfect for my wife and I ( and friends) to easily take it out and get some wonderful views of the night sky and all the infinite beauty out there. I've attached 2 pictures I took of the moon using the included cellphone bracket. Nice little addition to snap a few cool images. TL;DR Excellent quality telescope for the money, compact, light-weight, for any level user willing to invest a modicum of time to learn some basics :) PS: Orion, update your manual. It is missing things like how to use the phone adapter and what the screws are for on the main tube bands on top (like that knurled aluminum knob? Users shouldn't have to search the web all over for things like that, it's your product, document it well). Have someone proof-read and verify your docs, they are fine overall, but do have some errors and omissions. ... show more

This was my first telescope ever. I’ve been into stargazing and astronomy for years and when I saw the price tag on this scope I finally pulled the trigger. As a beginner setting up was a little tedious because of the mount style, took a little over an hour but thats to be expected. Using it for the first time, it was a clear night with no wind or rain. I struggled a bit with pointing it at the moon properly with the 25mm eyepiece and red dot, but eventually I was able. The fine tuning knobs were clunky but they worked, I found that everything would rotate instead of a lateral movement but that is probably user error. Focusing was annoying at first, when turning the knob the whole telescope would move making me have to adjust the whole thing again. Eventually I was able to focus and I put in my 10mm eyepiece and wow! The moon’s details were amazing I felt like the moon was right in front of me! I had to adjust the telescope every 5 seconds because the counterweight was practically useless, I ended up putting a clamp on it which worked well. Its not a smooth ride but using it the first few times was so much fun! For a complete beginner I was having a blast. After almost a month I became frustrated, the mount was incapable of staying still with even the slightest amount of wind when trying to put a camera into it the troubles with the counterweight were multiplied by 10, and trying to use a 6mm eyepiece or barlow lens was always kind of blurry. I had to fix the focusing knob by taking the plate off and tightening screws. I felt like there was a wall stopping me from using my telescope for something other than looking at the moon. This is a good starter telescope, but as soon as you want to use it seriously you will be very frustrated. Again, for a total beginner its great. I was able to get a couple pictures of the moon with my camera I will include them in the review. They were taken with a celestron barlow lens and a celestron 6mm eyepiece and the 10mm that came with the telescope. I am happy I purchased this to get me into scopes, but nothing more. ... show more

    • A light, portable Newtonian with a parabolic primary

Orion just makes nice telescopes. This one can be had with either a Dobsonian base, or a GEM. I went with the equatorial because I wanted to be able to track objects using fine controls. This has become my goto scope for traveling to dark sky places because of its light weight and great optics. With the proper eyepieces, this telescope is capable of great views of planetary objects, and quite a few deep-space objects as well. On a decent night, I can see the Orion nebula with this almost as well as with my 8-inch Dobsonian. In an age when Jones-Bird reflectors seem to dominate the less expensive reflectors, the Star Blast has a true parabolic mirror that gives superior performance. This telescope is priced right for anyone who is just starting out and wants to take a serious look at the night skies. In spite of the steeper learning curve of the eq mount, I'd recommend it over the Dobsonian version, because of the ability to easily track objects across the sky--even if you do not do a polar alignment. ... show more
