  • Too short!
I'm a fantasy/science fiction writer and I collect fairy tales and anthologies for inspiration and reference, so I ordered this because it looked good and had good reviews. It did have some stories in it I'd never heard before, and they gave me some good insight into the perspective of the Nordic peoples when it comes to folklore, but I wish it had more stories in it. It took me less than a day to finish. ... show more

  • Loved reading it, especially outloud
The stories were cute, and while I am not an expert on Scandinavian/Norse culture, it felt accurate to how culturally folktales are told in the region. There are tidbits on why stories tend to follow particular themes (such as why most main characters in stories are the youngest sibling). They do provide sources to where the short stories were sourced, so you can tell the authors didn't just make them up and try to pass them off as traditional. As for the content of the stories themselves, there are some damn clever protagonists. Art is super gorgeous too! From a critical standpoint, the author's voice may be difficult for some people, since it is written the way you'd expect traditionally oral stories to be told. I can read it out loud to kids and keep them interested, but just reading it late at night quietly can put me to sleep, since the flow is on the choppy side. If you like to write, there's good inspiration material in here. And if you're interesting in getting to know more about norse folk culture, check it out! ... show more

  • Christianized versions of the tales
While I haven't finished the book, a lot of the tales have been overly christianized, maybe I'm reading into it to much, particularly the story east of the sun, west of the moon. There was a part in there about only christians could clean the stains off the shirt, and I just found it kind of odd. I just know over the centuries many tales were passed down from generation to generation and have changed because of the post-christianization of these countries doing the best they could to stomp out the old ways, and I can't help but feel there was a pre-christianity version of many of these tales that I would prefer, and it gives me a slight sadness. Though none the less for what it is, they are quite interesting tales none the less, and it's always fun reading new ones! ... show more

  • Great collection of stories, well-written
I really enjoyed these stories, great collection except for the last story which was long and weird. Would definitely recommend overall, though.
