For a new motor under $250, this thing performs quite well. The only complaints (and they aren't really that) are that the motor is a bit noisy and vibrates a bit more than I would expect (but is within tolerable levels). That being said, for the price, it's a great motor for my setup. Last outing, the 3.5hp pushed my 1232 jon boat, with wood floor, benches, and front deck, gear, trolling motor and battery, and my wife and myself, to 4mph. Making it a great motor for cruising smaller setups. If I had just this motor, myself, lite gear, and the boat (1232 jon boat) I think it would push ~8mph. My particular hull is only rated for up to a 7hp motor (for reference). ... show more

Installation of Emergency Shut Off Switch on 3-1/2 HP Hangkai Outboard Boat Motor. Emergency switch available at West Marine, Brand BEP Hill Switch & Lanyard, Model #1001601 1. Remove side cover of the engine of which the original shut off button is mounted. 2. Replace original ends of wire with female spade connectors. 3. Picture shows where to drill a 5/8" hole in outer case adjacent to the pull starter base. 4. Put switch thru hole, tighten locknut. Take the 2 wires that you have replaced the ends on and plug them into C & C terminal. As an added note, the labeling of the choke "OPEN" "CLOSE" is backwards. The convention in the USA when it says "ON" it means the choke is closed. When it says "OFF", it means it's open. ... show more

Still breaking it in and may update later. Plenty of power for my 10 foot inflatable zodiac type boat. The issues are as follows. 1st, putting it into gear can cause the lever controlling the starter lock to come out, making it impossible to start without putting it back together. Not a good thought when you are riding 3 foot swells. Also, the fuel lines are held on either by zip ties or pure friction with the T joint made out of plastic. Thats a failure waiting to happen at the wrong time. Also, it needed a tune up to set the idle speed properly and make it run smoothly. Also, you will need a bucket to flush this since the standard adapters don't cover the intake port. Overall, it looks like it will do what I need it to, but will keep an eye on it. Update: 12/25: now, after a month in the shop, it won't go into reverse. Update: 12/27: ran ok 12/26 for more than an hour. Changed oil and lower end oil today. Lower end oil showed signs of water leakage. If you buy this motor, change this oil out as soon as you get it and before you take it on the water! Update: after taking it on the water in 12/29/2018 and 1/1/2019, I'm sorry to report the problems remain. It now spontaneously jumps out of gear when the power is increased. Still have to hold the gear lever down at low power to make sure it goes. Further it still will not idle properly nor consistently. I reached out to the seller 12/31. They said they would have the problem solved "tomorrow." Nothing doing since that deadline has passed. This motor I fear is a lemon. 9/2/2019. This motor is a total lemon. Aftet a day on the water, I came home to find my propeller had fallen off on the way home. It had snapped off at the threaded part of the prop shaft with only a few threads left. The motor had been stored indoors and religiously flushed after every trip. Am reaching out to the seller as this will effectively require a new lower unit. ... show more

To be clear, this review is for the customer service I received. This company/person is in my top 10 for customer service! This is more important to me than the item I buy. If you think about it whether the product is good, terrible or just faulty, if you don’t have good customer service you will get nowhere. When I purchased this motor there was definitely something wrong with it. By the time we put it on the boat and in the water to give it a go the initial warranty had expired. I communicated with the company and they explained the warranty had expired. They tried to help me to get to the problem and perhaps be able to fix it but I was not capable of doing what was required. They graciously gave me a full refund upon the return of the item including the return shipping. I must tell you I am very impressed with this company. There are not many left out there that honor their customers anymore. This is an honorably run company! ... show more

I do a lot of fishing and I needed something quick and super cheap . This motor was very cheap however it worked great for the lakes I was putting my boat in. I have a 14 foot aluminum boat and I was able to troll really well. It’s comes with a plastic Repeller but I switched it out with a metal one. ... show more

Everything the shipping fellow was very friendly love ups and FedEx but hate that the ad is incorrect plus the engine came with a broken clamp very very disappointed was excited to take my wife out and was just rained on our whole day with this bad news

    • Got it started the instructions did not mention to shove the choke back in after a pull or two.

I could not get the motor to start for nothing, but like most 2 strokes I had pulled the choke out and left it out. Sent a comment to the dealer and he sent me videos, seems on this one after two pulls turn the choke all the way off. Once I did that it started on the third pull. This after trying to start it for 2 days, all my other 2 stroke engines require the choke fully on even to warm up running before you can turn it off. ... show more
