  • Fantastic but too fast for trolling
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 36lb Thrust
If you’ve decided you’re buying a trolling motor for your kayak, you can stop looking, this can’t be beat with anything in its price range. Don’t be hard headed like me and go ahead and get some decent outriggers too, the two can make a kayak like a mini bass or skiff boat and can open up wind/wave limits and distances that were unsafe before. I may have had equally good customer service from another company but certainly not better! I had some vibration first time out, emailed them while not sure if it was motor or mount they replied in a few hours and then overnighted me a new prop, hardware and pins. Less than 24hours ownership and parts were shipped. Turned out pin got bent somehow but it’s pretty smooth now. I’m using a $90 lead acid 100ah battery, run it mostly on speed 4, inshore of Gulf of Mexico, stopping to fish occasionally, with 10mph+ winds, 1-2’ waves, I’ll use 5 if I need to maneuver quicker, and I get over 6 miles before the 4th light starts to flash which I treat as my “head back” indicator. I’m sure I could get 7 if needed and maybe up to 8 in smooth calm lake conditions. The battery indicators are bright enough to see in the sun but maybe a touch bright at night. They can’t be turned off but nothing a little piece of tape won’t fix. The wind gets rough here and sometimes I wish I got the 44lb vs 36 but ultimately the weight savings was worth it for me and this is fine. It gives my pelican catch 100 top speed of 3.5mph while average cruise in 4th gear is 3mph. Sit back, relax and enjoy the view, you’re not getting there quick. My one complaint, with my kayak anyway, speed one is just a touch too fast so when I cast a paddle tail in front of me while in 1st, I can’t reel it in fast enough to keep it swimming which totally ruins the action of the lure. If I try to troll behind me with 3/16oz 4/0 weighted hook it just breaks the surface. That’s a bit of a let down for me but I have a pretty light kayak so it may not be a common experience. I’ve only had it out a hand full of times so I’m sure I’ll learn the trick eventually. I was frequently limited by conditions I wasn’t comfortable in but this and yak gear outriggers mean I can safely and comfortable go out on rougher days and cover lots of ground which give me even more stress relief! Weekly trips vs closely monitoring conditions. ... show more

  • Great motor for the money
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 55lb Thrust
Had this exact same motor bought used for many many years. Before I bought this new one, I had bought one used so I didnt know how much use it had endured before I bought it. But I used it for several years and liked it. This summer i dropped it and broke it where the shaft meets the propeller housing. I couldn't fix it so I went shopping for a new one. I wanted the same 55lb thrust as my old motor. A Minn Kota 55lb transom mount motor was $319. Then I found this Newport 55lb thrust that was the same model as my old one for $199 on amazon. A couple weeks later I went on amazon to buy it and it was $169 on a black friday deal!! Bought it and used it the day after i got it. GREAT MOTOR!! Cruised around the lake all day and only used about half the charge on my battery and very fast. Pushed my 14ft aluminum on high , which is an old heavy boat, like nothing all day. Buy this motor and you won't regret it. ... show more

  • Good Value/Good Performance
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 55lb Thrust
Purchased this 55 Lb. thrust trolling motor to replace a MK brand that was no longer working after many years of service. Was stunned at the current replacement cost of a new MK so ordered this Newport Vessels brand. It is being used on a 12 foot alum. wide-transom canoe with a Group 24 deep cycle battery. Used it 2 times so far. Once on a tidal river and then a lake. (2 passengers). It performed very well and never lacked for speed even when up against head winds and tidal currents. It was used at speeds 2 and 3 for the most part with occasional bursts in 4 and 5. In speeds 1-3 it's a trolling motor, at 4 it's cruising and at 5 it becomes more like an outboard motor! She flies! Fairly quiet, but gets a bit louder as the speeds go up. Motor runs well but not as smooth and refined as the MK did. Seems to use a little more power than the MK, but the MK had slow- start and maximizer circuitry. Battery was down to about 65% after just under 2 hours but that was fighting winds and opposing current about 1/2 the time. Never felt any reduction in speed/power. Don't count on the built-in LED battery indicator as it was still showing 4 out of 5 lights. Overall, a decent motor and a good value. Can't comment on durability/reliability just yet until it sees more use. ... show more

  • Best Trolling motor for the money
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 55lb Thrust
I was a little skeptical about purchasing this item because of the price. You know the old saying, " if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". I have had many trolling motors in the past made by the big two (you know who they are). Not that those other trolling motors were not good, they just cost almost twic as much as the Newport Vessels. I have used this trolling motor a couple dozen times now in salt and fresh and I am happy to say I am so glad I took the chance on this product. Just goes to prove that sometimes you can get a quality product without paying for the brand name. Keep us the good work Newport Vessels! ... show more

  • Newport NV-Series 62lb Thrust Saltwater Transom Mounted Trolling Electric Trolling Motor
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 62lb Thrust
Newport NV-Series 62lb Thrust Saltwater Transom Mounted Trolling Electric Trolling Motor I use this trolling motor on my 10 foot boat. My wife and I have trolled around the lake for hours and still had 3/4 of a deep cycle battery left. I also like the battery indicator lights on the trolling motor to show you how much battery you have left. Also the telescoping handle makes it nice so you do not have to sit so close to the trolling motor. Now for the trust it is really impressive the 62lbs is more than enough to get you were you want to go. Would highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Easy Warranty Claim
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 86lb Thrust
Had my Newport 86lb 24V for about a year and a half and have used it almost daily. It developed a seal issue and quit working. I made a warranty claim and was expecting the normal "send it back and we'll replace it". I sent all the info and pics requested by Newport and was very pleasantly surprised that within a couple days I received an email from Newport support with a tracking number for a brand new replacement motor. The motor is strong, Newport was great to deal with, and they stand behind their warranty. A+++!! ... show more
