  • New Balance shoe
I really like this model N B shoe, this is my 3rd pair, after ankle surgery had to go from a size 13 to a 14 wide.

  • 978 runs Small - REVISED
I wore the 977 for several years and loved it. I just got the 978 and it's DEFINITELY running small compared to the size I ordered in the 977. I ordered a men's 11.5D and will try a 12D and hope that does the trick. I'll update this review if it's enough. If anyone from New Balance reads this - Why can't you design the next version of a shoe to fit like the last version? Don't you understand that this drives your customers crazy? I love a New Balance fit when I can finally find the right fit -- then the company makes it impossible for me to find that fit again without trying on several sizes, which is expensive and inconvenient when I shop exclusively online. Further, do you have to keep totally revising shoes/boots? When I finally find a shoe/boot that fits, I'd continue buying that style until the end of time if you'd make it available. Your practice of constantly changing styles and sizes costs you customers. I've had so much trouble this time around (ordering 4 different pairs of replacements for two of my old New Balance shoes & boots) that I finally gave up on my second shoe and bought something from Merrel instead... which actually fit surprisingly well. After being a 100% New Balance customer for over 12 years, I have my first pair of casual outdoor walkers from a different company. Too bad New Balance. I would have preferred to stay with you if you'd made it easier for me. I'm still hoping for the 978 in a 12D to fit right because I also need a heavier duty outdoor boot. REVISED REVIEW 2-12-13... I just received the 978 in a 12D and it's a perfect fit! I'm so glad I took a chance and exchanged for 1/2 size larger in the same width. There was an earlier review written by someone who said this shoe was stiffer, bulkier and more like a hiking boot. I'm not feeling that at all. Now that I have the right size on, this boot has the incredible comfort of a flexible walking shoe and a lot of cushioning coupled with the support of mid-high lacing, all in a boot that can take tough conditions. I wear these all day, everyday, indoors and out. These are great! REVISED REVIEW 2-22-13... I thought a 1/2 size would do it. The 12Ds felt great right out of the box, but after walking around in them for 10 days the toes feel more restrictive and all of the sudden I can feel the edges of the shoe with my toes to the point my toes are starting to hurt. Not good. I should have ordered a FULL SIZE LARGER than the 977 -- and in my case, my only option is to go 1.5 sizes (from 11.5 to 13). This is quite a hassle and I blame New Balance who should have the expertise by now to be able to accurately design and manufacture shoes to fit standard sizing requirements. Why call this a 13 when it only fits a size 11.5 foot??? I love everything about this boot except the sizing issue. It's flexible, very cushioned inside, well-made, and I expect to get a lot of wear out of it. I use these all-day every-day for both work and home. They're incredibly comfortable -- but you have to be sure you get the right size. REVISED REVIEW 3-2-13... The 13D is perfect. That's one and a half sizes larger than I wore in the 977. In any case, I love these boots regardless of what size they call them. VERY comfortable. Flexible. And they look a lot nice than shown in the picture. The picture makes them seem clunky. In person, these look really good and feel even better. I wear them all day every day. GREAT BOOT! ... show more

  • NB insole absolutely worthless but replacements fix problem; otherwise, overall I am happy with them thus far
I tried these on, gave them a good walk-around in the store and left undecided. I had tried several different shoes, my ankle was sore and I wasn't sure which shoe(s) was/were the culprit. About six weeks earlier I had turned my ankle nearly sideways stumbling into a boot-sized hole. I tried to slowly build up the strength in the ankle wearing my Reeboks but it became clear I needed more ankle support if I hoped to be able to return to some level of fitness walking. Since the 978s came closest to what I was looking for, after a few days of pondering, I decided to give them a full-time shot. Good news: the ankle support is there, thanks to a snug fit and the flexible tightening of the upper laces. Bad news: after several short (less than two mile) walks, the ball of my foot was sore. Small wonder, as the 978's insoles have no cushion whatsoever. The shoes were beyond returning with a good conscience, so I decided to get a pair of third-party insoles (Dr. Scholl's Active Series). The cushioning is definitely better but I now have learned the lesson that Scholl's Men's Size 7.5-10 is optimally set for a size somewhere in between, as the arch for a 10 hits me in the wrong place. I have also determined that at least with this model of insole it raises the ball of my foot even more than I expected. Hopefully I will be able to find the right combination of lace tightness and looseness to accommodate for the thicker insole. Now I get to find out just how well their guarantee actually works. Back to the 978s. Like I said, they are snug in the width for both the ball of the foot and the heel. I am really a Size 10C, but it's all but impossible to find any shoes other than expensive dress shoes in 10C. The 978s at least for now come as close to a 10C size as any 10D I have ever worn. They are bound to stretch a bit over use, but hopefully not to the point where my heel is swimming. The rolling effect of the soles is just about right for how I walk. Beyond putting them on and taking them of five or six times to stretch the upper, there was virtually no break-in time. I haven't owned a pair of New Balance in ages, so I can't make any comparison in quality to recent shoe models, but they appear to be well-made by 2012 standards and prices. INSOLE UPDATE: Stay away from insoles that have a hard instep support. The instep was the problem with the "Active" pair of insoles and the "Gel Sport" uses the same type of hard instep support. There may be a certain "ideal" shoe size where the hard instep works in a 978, but it's not a Men's Size 10. I dropped down a level and went with the "Massaging Gel" Size 8-13. The insole conforms to the shoe and the balls of my feet greatly appreciate the increased padding. One oddity: cutting to a Size 10 leaves the insoles too long. I cut down to a Size 9 and everything lined up. ... show more

  • HAVE JUST BOUGHT MY SIXTH PAIR OF THESE BOOTS
This is an excellent all-around boot for almost anything - hiking (but probably not heavy-load backpacking), wearing around town, mowing the lawn , vacations, any time of year. NB discontinued it for a few years, then brought it back. Excellent traction sole (but see note below), good heavy leather, waterproof membrane, comfortable. The only negative with this boot is that I keep a tube or two of appropriate glues around to re-glue the soles when needed. Every one of the first 5 pairs (and they also put the same sole on their 1569 boot, which I also own but still prefer the 978) has had the sole glued back on in various places multiple times - but they keep on working fine as long as you do that. The only other issue is that the boot is very handsome when new, but ages in appearance much quicker than one would expect - the leather discolors, fades, loses it attractiveness, even with using good quality cleaners and treatments - the 978 does this faster than the 1569. Two of the six pair I still own are now strictly used for yard work, washing the car, and other chores - but still serviceable and useful. ... show more
