I recently purchased the New Balance 481 v3 Trail Running Shoe, and overall, my experience with it has been a mix of positive and negative aspects. While it certainly has some notable features, there are a few drawbacks that prevent me from giving it a higher rating. Starting with the positives, the shoe offers a solid level of traction on various terrains. Whether I was running on muddy trails or rocky paths, the outsole provided sufficient grip, allowing me to maintain stability and confidence throughout my runs. Additionally, the shoe's durability impressed me; it held up well even after multiple rigorous trail runs, showing minimal signs of wear and tear. In terms of comfort, the 481 v3 does a decent job. The cushioning provides a good amount of support, especially when dealing with uneven surfaces. The midsole offers enough responsiveness to enhance my running experience, although it may not be as plush or responsive as some other models in its class. The shoe also offers ample room in the toe box, allowing for natural foot movement. However, the fit of the 481 v3 could be improved. While the toe box is spacious, the overall fit feels somewhat loose, especially in the midfoot area. This can cause a lack of stability, which is not ideal when navigating challenging terrains. The lacing system doesn't do much to address this issue, as it doesn't provide enough lockdown or customization options. Another downside of the 481 v3 is its weight. I'm a dog walker and occasional hiker in Colorado. I bought these in Jan 2020 and I'm only replacing them now because I think them being so used is causing some shin pain. But they're still in one piece despite me putting over 500 miles hiking and running on them plus daily use almost every day that whole time. Only replaced insoles once. I hope newer models hold up this well. I'll still keep these for dirty chores. ... show more

    • Reliable, comfortable, good fit for wide toe, narrow heel

I've worn this same model of shoe in different looks for a while now, and they've always been comfortable, afforded good traction, and fit my difficult feet. I cannot stand pressure on the front of my foot, so I need it a little loose, typically EEEE. At the same time, I have a AAA heel, and these shoes are made on a last that allows a perfect fit for me. New Balance has several last styles that fit a wide variety of foot shapes, and they're the only ones that I've found that make a good last for me, plus these things last well and keep their comfort. Recent purchases of Sketchers products exhibited inferior workmanship, including thin footbeds and glued seams that lasted just weeks before parting. Their designs work best for people with slim ankles, so they are not well-suited for people who have pedal edema (swollen ankles from fluid retention) or wide feet. Also more problematic is the very poor lateral support from the too-soft foam underfoot. Went back to New Balance for more robust construction, a much better footbed, and much safer lateral stability, especially on uneven terrain. Slight increase in price but a much better product. The only better products are by Merrill. ... show more
