Top Amazon Reviews

  • Do NOT believe the reviews you've seen on this telescope and it's mount
I'm an experienced telescope builder and I have been building scopes in one form or another for 30+ years. I decided I wanted to pick up a ready made little 4 1/2 inch F4 or F5 fast mirror scope and this one was available on Ebay, so I pulled the trigger and bought it. It is truly a NICE little scope with a well collimated mirror and a really decent little focusing rack and pinion - Yes they are plastic, but they seem well enough built and better than some other major brand competitors out there from what I see. The tube is likely made of steel or aluminum and is of decent thickness and didn't flex on testing pressing on it - Strong and well made. The tube has a seam where the flat piece of metal was folded to make the tube and the seam is tight and sealed well. I didn't get the mount with the scope, but from the manual and photos I've seen it is a super stock medium duty equatorial mount and a nice one at that. The aft end of the scope is sealed with good stainless steel bolts and nuts all over the scope, plastic on the back end sealed portion and a removable cap and moon cap on the forward cap as well (to ease amount of light on the eyes when observing the moon). The finder is the average quality you get with most any scope these days and for a fast wide angle telescope like this, you really have everything you need to get to work IF... and a big IF... YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE IN THIS SCOPE AND HOW TO USE IT AS WELL AS SOME ASTRONOMICAL KNOWLEDGE! This is where the other reviews fall by the wayside. These people do NOT seem to know astronomy and telescopes and are passing judgement based on preconceptions rather than knowing the subject matter. They probably didn't even research the topic before getting into this with a nuts and bolts machine in their hands. When one buys a telescope or makes one, there are design criteria, performance factors and expectation management issues to deal with and having a basic telescope knowledge base to operate from is a major step forward to truly learning to appreciate what a piece of gear can and cannot do. I bet none of these reviewers even researched that this scope was made by Bressler and that it is on par with many higher end telescopes made by Celestron and Meade for beginner to advanced users. Many complained about the manual being unavailable. To that, I agree that is an issue, but 5 minutes of me searching and I found the manual at: https://www.kenko-tokina.co.jp/optics/mt-images/80-10114_114mmTelescope_Manual.pdf To Bressler - I would implore you to fix your web site to include a section with this scope on it in manual form! There is no excuse for not having manuals for all your products easily found there. And for people who carp and don't invest time to find a manual online... I just have no words to reply with other than I found it in 5 minutes of looking. Speaking of the manual - Well Written! It has everything you need and even a list of objects like Messier objects like M-42 (easily found and nearly visible to the naked eye), M57 the Ring Nebula in Lyra and more. The manual is a teaser to the end user to go learn more from the wealth of astronomy books here on Amazon or online at Cloudy Nights or other great web sites. Bressler and NatGeo have no issues with this well written guide and it's WAY better than most I've seen. Finally, addressing the National Geographic brand on the scope. I rather liked it and thing NatGeo picked a good company to put their logo on for these scopes. The fit and finish are excellent and it is just a REALLY well built little Newtonian Reflector. NatGeo did nothing wrong here. It's the reviewers who are not well versed in astronomical subject matter and telescopes who would have given any scope a bad review no matter how well made it was. I'm glad to have it in my stable of scopes and will be building a nice little mounting system for mine to get it to work. And no... I work for none of these companies. I a retired senior webmaster who worked in aerospace, specifically spacecraft propulsion systems for 3 decades. I give honest reviews and this one REALLY needed to come to the defense of this nice little telescope that is a jewel in the right hands. ... show more
