  • MOVO microphone is handsomely designed, sized very well, and sets up seamlessly
Color: Silver
First of all, the delivery service quite amazed me. I had the MOVO at my house the day after I ordered it. I bought it to enhance my social media experience in sharing and recording conversations and readings. I worried a bit about compatibility, as I'm using an older pc at my home office, but the connections and set up were virtually instantaneous. I look forward to learning more about the features and quality of this microphone as part of my home office environment. ... show more

  • Not a $100 mic.
Color: Silver
Cheap knobs and cables. Only turns on when recording. Other mics are always on and they always feedback to the audio jack.

  • A mixed review
Color: Silver
I've been listening to music since I can remember, 60 years, and have subscribed to audio magazines back in the day, and understood all the technical jargon. But I don't play an instrument and my hearing is deteriorating. That's me. Still, I went for this item when I had the chance to test a "good" mic, as opposed to some $15 thing. The UM800, at $150, is a mixed bag. In brief and lackadaisical testing, using my Axiom speakers, Audacity, and an online tone generator, it "faithfully" recorded what my speakers output from my Win10 machine, from about 60 Hz - 8k. Other cheap mics couldn't do that. Like I said, I'm not an audio engineer : I know my hearing, hardware, and technical limitations. So basically I'd say it's the best mic I've used. Actually, I gave it to a relative, who's into theater and needed a quality mic (the reason for the late review), and her review is below. I did not test the various directional options, which was beyond my purview. I also liked • The 3.5 mm headphone output was not disabled when the Mute button was pushed. • The Mute button lights when engaged. • The headphone volume knob is on the front. • Includes a wind screen (not tested). • Heavy-duty stand that allows the mic to be rotated in one dimension, and a screw-type connector at the bottom (for a standard boom, I suppose). All of that is offset by The Somewhat Bad: • The USB-Micro-B input jack is on the bottom of the unit. First, Micro-B is a pretty flimsy connection, especially for something being used a lot, subject to movement. Being on the bottom lends itself to being pulled and twisted in harmful ways. In fact, this happened at some point, since the included cable was damaged, I assume by my relative. (Cables are cheap, so no big deal : but it's worrisome that it happened to someone who is very careful.) • The headphone jack is also on the bottom. • The Pattern and Mic Gain controls are on the back. So you really have to know which side is more important. To me it's an ergonomic mess. • Zero online Support. I could find no support links at all, for any Movo product. A blurb on the box said to go to such-and-such to up the warranty to two years, but that link does not exist. In fact, there is nothing on their site at all about the UM800. I can't recall if it came with a manual, but usually I'll scan it the first thing. I have nothing in my archives. All that being said, the pickup quality seems to be good, the construction robust, controls and locations iffy, the support nil, the price rather high. Maybe your ears can tell the difference. Here's an extended user's review: ------ This microphone worked well for my purposes, and only heard some minor imperfections. I used this microphone to record voiceovers to a video I was making, and the sound was overall very good. It felt nice to use the microphone, it was super easy to set up and plug in, and I had no issues with it picking up sound. At first, I noticed a lot of scratchy sounds when listening to the playback, however, I messed around with the gain and volume and eventually no longer noticed it. This microphone seems high quality and I am loving it for what it's worth. I would definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Overall Good Podcast/Zoom Meeting Mic
Color: Silver
Using this mic for meetings while we are still working from home was mostly good, although once in a while your audio delays a LOT, about 3 seconds or more. Plugging it in again in the USB port fixes it and it connects right up. People say it sounds fine generally. The front knob is headphone volume and a mute switch which is handy. It comes with a foam windscreen which I just keep on as a dust cover. What this mic won't work for is recording vocals if you write and record music at home. The built-in compression is way to strong. I get it, that's done to ensure your speaking voice is even, but this isn't for singing. With normal studio mics, you plug them into an audio interface/preamp which then plugs into your computer via USB. In a USB Podcast mic, that circuitry for interface and preamp are built into the mic (hence the large body), but generally components like that are not even close to studio grade. Not a bad thing, that's just what it is. So if you plan to stream with only speaking, then this mic will work fine. ... show more

  • Solid build, excellent sound
Color: Silver
The UM800 is big, solidly built and versatile. It ships with swappable cables for USB-A, USB-C and Lightning port connectivity. It not only works with desktop and laptop computers but most smartphones and tablets as well. The only downer is that the port on the mic itself is micro-USB. All of the above listed cables are micro-USB to the respective connector. The body and stand are all-metal. This adds to the weight but also gives the mic a substantial, high-end quality and durable feel. There is a foam windscreen cover included. The mic has a 5/8” threaded mount hole and a 3.5mm headphone port on the bottom along with the micro-USB port. One side of the mic chassis contains the mute and volume buttons while the gain and sound pattern buttons sit on the opposite side. All buttons are easily accessible and easy to use. The chassis can be adjusted and even folded into the stand for storage or transport. The stand is also removable for mounting the mic elsewhere if necessary. Build quality is nice but the most important aspect of the UM800 is sound quality. In a nutshell, it’s excellent. With the gain set midway, voices are loud and words are clear and easily understandable. Distance is important as I found the mic more prone to distortion if I speak too loudly while too close. That can be remedied by adjusting the gain but I actually like the gain where it is and instead make sure to maintain a six inch minimum speaking distance. The windscreen doesn’t really prevent the distortion as I was able to recreate it both with and without the windscreen applied. The mic button works reliably and has a red illuminated LED indicator when it’s active. I tried the four different sound patterns to note the differences among each. All have a unique effect on voice sounds when used. Each pattern serves a specific purpose which I’ll include as well. Stereo: Stereo is a basic pattern where sound is picked up from the right and left sides of the mic to recreate a more natural sound. Stereo sounds like pretty much any other mic with a general, non-focused but clear sounding voice. Cardioid: This pattern eliminates ambient noise and delivers a loud, crystal clear sounding voice. This is my preferred mode overall and is the best of the four for voiceovers, podcasts, streams and any other use where voice clarity and loudness are crucial. It puts a strong emphasis on the voice and helps suppress background noise interference. Omnidirectional: This pattern is best if the mic is being used by multiple people, especially a group or team huddling for a teleconference meeting. The mic picks up sounds from all angles with well balanced loudness and clarity regardless of position. Voices sound slightly more shallow and distant than the other patterns unless speaking directly into the mic. Voice quality is on par with the stereo pattern if speaking directly into the mic rather than from a distance. This is helpful if one participant needs to be isolated to stand out amongst a group. Bi-directional: This is a great mode if sitting opposite of someone while sharing the mic. Voices from the front and back sound loud and clear while voices and sounds from the sides tend to sound noticeably quieter and more distant. Like cardioid, I prefer this mode over stereo due to the better voice isolation and decreased ambient noise. The UM800 is both a very nicely built and very good sounding microphone. It’s versatile enough for many different usage scenarios across multiple platforms. The included cables ensure it will work with all but the oldest PC’s, Android or iOS devices. Although I haven’t tried or researched it myself, I suspect it may also likely work with gaming consoles as well. I like the heavy duty build quality and the sound. It would be nice if the input were USB-C rather than micro-USB but that’s about the only con I’ve observed to this point. ... show more
