  • Visually spectacular steam punk oddyssey
This is a review of “Mortal Engines” as seen on Amazon Prime video. It is not a review of the blu-ray or DVD. Mortal Engines was premiered in November 2017. It is directed Christian Rivers and stars Hera Hilmar (Hester Shaw), Robert Sheehan (Tom Natsworthy) Jihae (Anna Fang) and Hugo Weaving (Thaddeus Valentine). The Plot (Spoiler alert) – The world was devastated by a world war where the major powers used quantum weapons on each other. This destroyed civiliations and cracked the continental plates. Out of this devastation two sides emerged. The first side are the “Tractionists” mobile cities which prey upon each other for resources and the “anti-Tractionists” who live in traditional static cities. The mobile city of London is a large and very voracious mobile city which roams the world gobbling up smaller cities. Its chief historian, Thaddeus Valentine, has built a quantum weapon and want to take on the anti-tractionists. Hester Shaw wants revenge for the death of her mother at Thaddeus’ hands and sets out to oppose him aided by a Londoner; Tom Natsworthy. The Good – This is a visual masterpiece. The large scale action sequences with cities chasing each other across the steppe are superb. There are flight scenes, fight scenes and all manner of visual treats along the way. It is a non-stop thrill ride. The plot isn’t the most subtle but the acting is good and the character of Hester is a much better, more plausible female heroine than anything offered up by Marvel or DC. Hera Hilmar carries the role of Hester very well and her opposition to Hugo Weavings’ Valentine is well done. The steam punk theme is well done and consistent. Mortal Engines is about two hours long and there are very few quiet moments. The plot and character development is folded into he movie very well and this rolls along at a pleasing pace. The Bad – I’m clearly a fan but nothing is perfect. The soundtrack is the worst aspect. The music and sound effects are too loud compared to the spoken lines. I had to turn the sound up very high to hear the actors which meant that the rest of the soundtrack was just too loud. This isn’t the first time this has happened with a Prime video stream and as I haven’t seen the blu-ray I can’t say if this is a fundamental flaw or is due to the streaming. Some of the scenes are a bit derivative. I was reminded of the first Star Wars film a couple of times, particularly the final battle. Not necessarily a bad thing but it was something I noticed. Summary – I really enjoyed this film. I will probably buy the book (Kindle) and definitely buy the blu-ray. I found th world easy to grasp but then I had the right background (Cities in Space by James Blish, Steamboy (anime), Chrome shelled Regios (anime), Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow, and even Star Wars). There really isn’t a dull moment. The characters are much more plausible than anything in the MCU or DC films and it avoids the pompousness of these vehicles. Minor quibbles with the soundtrack aside this is great entertainment and I know I’ll watch and enjoy it again. ... show more

  • Great steampunk and airships, fun movie
This is a fun movie, with a great pace. The steampunk is premium (as Wild Wild West), the predator cities are unique to this movie (as far as I know) and the Airships are great (fantasy, not realistic). The story is really as good as any post-apoc fantasy (as Mad Max, etc.), and the only reason its not 5 stars is that the movie is a little weak on character relations - positive and negative chemistry is just 'a little shallow.' ... show more

  • Why the Mortal Engines is actually good - an essay
First of all, I'd read reviews and seen it crash in the box office like everyone else. I thought I'd watch it on a lark because I like Hugo Weaving and Robert Sheehan. In the opening sequence, I found I was enjoying myself. Halfway through, I found the movie was making me feel things. And by the end, I found that I had really appreciated everything the movie had done. Beware spoilers below. Fair warning, I have not read the book, though now I would very much like to. Because of that, I'm not sure how much of my praise is owed to the book and how much to the movie, but since this is a review for the movie, it might not matter. My favorite thing has to be the gender role reversal. In this, the female characters are the powerful, badass, mysterious, and gruff ones, and our male lead is the "damsel in distress", "uptown girl", whose main purpose is to be the romantic interest for the main character. And as a whole the characters aren't sexualized in practically any way, making it only their characteristics and actions which are attractive and admirable. On top of which, this is one of the few young adult franchises without a tiresome love triangle. On all those accounts, love it. While many of the main plot points are tropes, and elements seen in other franchises such as Star Wars, Transformers, Hunger Games, among other, it is enough of a pastiche to become itself original, and just bask in the fact that it's an extremely cool idea, however improbable and impractical the idea of moving cities may be. It just LOOKS cool, and feels cool, and I'm not afraid to admit I was breathless when they were jumping from a giant wheel onto a city catwalk. Additionally, minorities, women, and people of color were the standouts of the film, along with the Chinese being heroes and symbols of freedom instead of being vilified as they often are in modern and 80's cinema - which isn't to say that I'm not as against the repression of their people and the violence of their government as the next person, but their culture is long and historied and their people deserving of being portrayed positively on screen. Lastly, I greatly enjoyed the subversion of the Terminator trope, in making Shrike a sympathetic father figure instead of a mindless killing machine and extra complication to the plot. The one time I cried during the film was during his death scene, which was when I realized that the movie really had gotten me, and it wasn't the "so bad it's good" watch I'd thought it was going to be when I turned it on. Tldr; this is actually a very good movie, no matter what others say, and I beg you to give it a chance. Now I'm off to read the book. ... show more

  • Good fantasy romp given a bad wrap
It's a decent movie that, yes, was adapted from the books but I think expectations were so high after the Lord of the Rings that better care should have been taken to iron the story out. Still fun and interesting.

  • Not great
The layout of the story was so off base. The history should have been told first. It would taken 5 minutes of the film to lay that out in the begining. There was no reason to care about the characters. You don't know what happens to Captain Khora and his co-pilot. I wanted a reason to care about the characters. The leads just fell flat on that. It looked like most of the actors (with the exception of Rege' Jean Page) phoned this in. The special effects were kinda cool. But that is it. ... show more
