I was trying to find a natural organic eye shadow that was not as expensive as the 100% Pure eye shadows and came across this product --Mom's Secret 100% Natural Eye Shadow, organic..." I ordered the Smokin' Plum and was very pleased with the lovely plum color and subtle shimmer, as well. However, I just discovered that one of the ingredients in this eye shadow -- Magnesium Stearate -- is NOT natural. Below is a comment that I found at the end of an article (Magnesium Stearate in Supplements - Is It Safe?), that was posted by someone who worked in a health food store for over twenty years. (Magnesium Stearate is an inactive ingredient that is added to many vitamin supplements). Here is the comment: "Just to clarify, magnesium stearate is NOT natural-- it does not occur anywhere in nature. It is produced by a high heat process that combines magnesium with stearic acid. Having worked in health food stores for over 20 years, I have heard enough people tell me that magnesium stearate causes them to have headaches, and their headaches went away after they stopped taking supplements that had mag stearate in them. My concern would be what effect does mag stearate have on your cells. How does it prevent material from adhering to the tabletting or encapsulation machinery? Why wouldn't it affect your cell membranes the same way?" This article that I found also states the following: "...some websites have cautioned that it [Magnesium Stearate] is potentially "hazardous" and "harmful." The reasons typically given are that magnesium stearate may adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. At the same time, magnesium stearate is generally recognized as safe by the FDA for use in supplements." With Magnesium Stearate also being added to eye shadows and other cosmetics, this ingredient will be absorbed into our bodies through our skin. Personally I do not want to take that risk. No, as lovely as this color is, I cannot recommend this eye shadow, which is why I gave it only two stars. ... show more
